Affirmative Action and Segregation
Affirmative Action and Segregation
03/13/2003 10:16 AMThe Dartmouth, the
nation's oldest college newspaper, contained an interesting series
of
articles on affirmative action this Monday. It seems the Bush
brothers
have a new plan: end affirmative action, but increase spending (by
a
token amount) at "historically black" universities.

02/01/2005 10:09 PMI had to go all the way over to LISNews<
/a> to find out that a sister Library System here in Illinois has
started a totally awesome project called Libraries Matter. Here at home,
our kids saved up some money to buy the 10–pack of Lance
Armstrong yellow wristbands because they’re all the rage at
school. Can you imagine if we could start something similar with these
blue ones for libraries? Brilliant job, Alliance Library
System!
One thing, though – how about offering packs
smaller than 50 so that ordinary folks like myself can buy some and
give them out to friends, kids, etc.? Let’s get some grassroots
support going, not just top down from the institutional level! Then,
let’s think about how we can use these on Advocacy Day this
year.
Tangent: When visiting the ALS web site tonight,
I realized they’ve added blogs to the home page (kind of, sort
of). Sweet! Unfortunately, no RSS feeds to be found anywhere, which
means I won’t be able to add them to my aggregator, which means
I’ll have to keep relying on other web sites to highlight ALS
projects for me. Not sweet. C’mon, ALS, show us the RSS!

Secondly, Sam Ruby not only pointed out this, he offered a really insightful response to the challenge. I’m going to

Neither Red Nor Blue
Neither Red Nor Blue
12/26/2004 12:55 PMI like politics. I follow it the way some people follow sports. The
Democrat Party and Republican Party are major league teams. They
battle each other in national, state and local contests. They have
mascots, both created by the same person. They have fanatical
supporters just like any sport. Like minor league teams, there are
also minor political parties to watch that sometimes play spoiler and
sometimes gain enough strength to influence the major parties.
Some operate only locally, some statewide, and some try to operate
nationally. I also enjoy following individual personalities. People
love and hate them like they love and hate sports teams and athletes.
I'm sometimes startled by the degree of blind adoration or blind
rage that politicians can inspire in otherwise calm, rational
people. Lately, I've noticed that there's a growing tendency to
divide the United States into red states and blue states. People seem
to think that it's possible for an entire state to be Democrat or
Republican. How can that be if it's difficult to even categorize
individual Americans into definite camps? Now, although once
restricted to politics, the idea is spreading to other arenas. I
saw a suggestion that Hollywood start targetting states as red or blue
audiences. I've seen statistics that compare red states versus
blue states on categories such as religion, income, and even gifts to
charity. The division of the United States into red and blue states
is overly simplistic and misleading.

a particularily good one -- I'm still chuckling.

Helsinki Energy seems to go out of it's way to make power plants look
good as though people might notice, and perhaps blame them, that the
Baltic is still so polluted that it's not recommended to eat Baltic
fish more than once a week or the layer of smoggy gritty haze over the
city today if they didn't sex them up a
bit. As though they might be saying, "Yes, this is a coal fired
power plant but, hey, aren't these lovely blue power lines beautiful?"
Sure, they say the plants are ultra clean but the people they're
saying that to probably don't live next to the strip mine somewhere
with cheap labour and no pretty blue pylons. Energy production is with
rare exception a dirty, ugly business that we'd all like to pretend
that we don't participate in and depend on utterly each and every day.
I look at those blue giants daily and I'm reminded of the lengths we
will go in our own self-deceptions and how we are so willing to be
fooled. We are energy junkies.

popular vote can be so evenly split when the red state / blue state

electoral votes. Presumably, this map will be updated, along with the
standard one, with new polling data daily. [thanks to EB for

Blue Man Group
Blue Man Group
10/29/2003 01:15 AMI went to see Blue Man Group as couple of nights ago with my
girlfriend Karen and her family. My two word review: very cool. The
opening acts were Tracy Bonham, who plays a wicked fiddle version of
Led Zeppelin, among her other musical talents, and Venus Hum, which
was more like Venus Ho-hum with their lead singer's voice barely
audible on the first song and an incomprehensible drone or whine on
the other tired techo songs. You can share in some of the crapiness by
visiting their twitchy website. The concert used huge video screens to
have the audience do Rock Concert Movements such as #1 which is of
course the head bob, and #3, which is the downward jump. Blue Man
Group managed to simultaneously mock rock concerts, with a
sarcastically large backing band, and throw a pretty good concert, all
while keeping their trademark inventiveness and visual eye-candy
intact. I was worried for a second when they brought Venus Ho-Hum out
again, but even they couldn't ruin a piece together with Blue Man
Group that was a re-working of Cream's "I Feel Free". The ending was a
resounding version of Baba O'Reilly that worked beautifully with Tracy
Bonham playing some wicked fiddle. No, I don't have pictures. I'm not
that guy....
