Spy Cameras In Shanghai Internet Cafes

Spy Cameras In Shanghai Internet Cafes 04/22/2004 01:26 PM
Already all internet usage in China is heavily monitored and filtered. However, apparently that's not enough for their internet cafes. It's not even enough to have internet cafe operators monitor usage to make sure nothing "bad" is happening. Instead, they're going one step further to install video cameras in internet cafes which send a broadcast to a central "supervisory center" where someone will make sure that nothing bad is happening. They claim it was spot illegal activity "immediately" - though they don't explain what they'll do after they spot that illegal activity. What's the next step? Having everyone wear their own camera all the time and have it send a constant stream to the same "supervisory center" in case you do or see anything bad?

Vietnam Wants Internet Cafes To Monitor

Vietnam Wants Internet Cafes To Monitor
Internet Usage
06/08/2004 06:31 PM
If there's one thing that's obviously available in bunches on the internet, it's "bad information." However the Vietnamese government has decided that "bad information" (which they seem to believe is anything they don't agree with, or anything that portrays them in a negative light - this post, for example, would probably qualify) is illegal and must be stopped online. They've now told local governments to start monitoring internet usage and have warned internet cafe owners they can be fined or jailed if any of their patrons uploads or downloads "bad information." To help track this sort of thing, they also want all internet cafe owners to "document what Web sites their clients visit and for how long." In other words, it's now prohibitively expensive to run an internet cafe in Vietnam. It's amazing that these sorts of regimes< /a> honestly believe that stopping such info, at the cost of killing off all of the benefits the internet provides, is actually worthwhile.

Gorilla Usability

Gorilla Usability 12/23/2002 10:55 AM
Not everyone has time to conduct a formal usability study, or the money to invest in a full blown usability initiative, and frankly, lots of times that might not be the best option anyway. Sometimes a designer or developer needs that one-on-one, maker-to-user interface. Gorilla Usability will show you some ways to get to know your users in a real world, out-from-behind-the-glass kind of way.

Koko goes to the dentist
About a month ago, Koko, a 300-plus-pound ape who became famous for mastering more than 1,000 signs, began telling her handlers... she was in pain. They quickly constructed a pain chart, offering Koko a scale from one to 10. When Koko started pointing to nine or 10 too often, a dental appointment was made. (There's a rather funny development at the very bottom of the story)

Blogger: The New 500 Pound Gorilla of the Blog World Wow! Zounds! Forsooth! Google bought Blogger! Now there's something I wouldn't have guessed. Honestly. Doc has more. [_Go_] And over on Anil Dash's blog, Bill has a damn good point: But what no one has mmentioned, and may really be the key, is that Pyra has/is about to have a version of Blogger written more or less completely in Java that can be deployed on any server. The Globo deal was just the tip of the iceberg, they (Ev and Jason) wanted to sell this into corporations for a few $k per server. Combine that with Google search appliance and maybe another odd piece or two and you have a very sophisticated, valuable Intranet addition. [_Go_]

Brains turn gorilla suits invisible

Brains turn gorilla suits invisible 05/06/2004 04:30 AM
Interesting piece on experiments in "change-blindness" -- the brain's refusal to take note of changes in our visual field.
Working with Christopher Chabris at Harvard University, Simons came up with another demonstration that has now become a classic, based on a videotape of a handful of people playing basketball. They played the tape to subjects and asked them to count the passes made by one of the teams.

Around half failed to spot a woman dressed in a gorilla suit who walked slowly across the scene for nine seconds, even though this hairy interloper had passed between the players and stopped to face the camera and thump her chest.

However, if people were simply asked to view the tape, they noticed the gorilla easily. The effect is so striking that some of them refused to accept they were looking at the same tape and thought that it was a different version of the video, one edited to include the ape.

The final day at OSCON kicked off with an encouraging and standing ovation-evoking keynote from Cartography Associates President David Rumsey, who laid out how open source principles may be applied to an emerging "digital library world." That was followed by a Novell talk about the success of switching from proprietary to open source, a discussion of some "nonsense" economic theory, and a call for open source to step up and help feed a big, bad gorilla known as King Kong.
