How do you cancel an AOL account?
How do you cancel an AOL account?
03/31/2005 10:52 PMJust for fun, I recently signed up for an AOL account through one of
those ubiquitous free CDROMS, and now that I’ve poked around a
bit, I’ve decided to shut it down. It’s time to return to
the real Internet. But I’m a bit stymied. How do I cancel my AOL
account?…

Computer, Cancel Last Command
10/29/2003 01:15 AMMac OS X ships with a neat-sounding feature called Speakable Items. --
supposedly all you need to do is enable a little listener program and
you can start verbally abusing your computer. At first only one in
every few commands seemed to work. My attempts to issue the command
"Tell me a Joke" in a progressively louder and louder voice succeeded
only in providing my coworkers with irrefutable proof that my mind is
as leaky as a sieve. I thought I might have the volume on the
microphone turned down too low, so I went into the Preferences to
check it out...much to my surprise, the volume was actually set too
high. Once I had the volume properly tuned, the computer began to
respond to about 80% of my commands -- at least as obedient and
responsive as the average human, in my opinion. When I was satisfied
that it worked reasonably well, I called in a coworker to show her my
neat new parlor trick. As the Law of Singing Frogs would dictate, the
program would not respond while she was paying attention. When she
went away, bored by the lack of response, it started working again. My
current suspicion is that the microphone is sensitive enough to pick
up her breathing, which interferes with the recognition algorithms.
Still, when no one was looking I could issue commands such as "Switch
to Mail", "Reply to this message", "What time is it", "Log out", etc.
and usually get the behavior I was after. Even when it's working
properly, however, the Speakable Items seems only marginally useful.
It's missing one key feature; the ability to print what I say.
Currently I can instruct my computer: "Computer, Switch to Mail. Get
new messages. Reply to this message." But until I can also tell
Ethereal "Take dictation," I am not likely to bother....

11/04/2003 06:30 AM CBS may cancel 'The Reagans' mini-series over GOP
protests. Rep. John Dingall
has some thoughts on the matter: As someone who served with
President Reagan, and in the interest of historical accuracy, please
allow me to share with you some of my recollections of the Reagan
years that I hope will make it into the final cut of the mini-series:
$640 Pentagon toilets seats; ketchup as a vegetable; union busting;
firing striking air traffic controllers; Iran-Contra; selling arms to
terrorist nations; trading arms for hostages; retreating from
terrorists in Beirut; lying to Congress; financing an illegal war in
Nicaragua; visiting Bitburg cemetery; a cozy relationship with Saddam
Hussein; shredding documents; Ed Meese; Fawn Hall; Oliver North; James
Watt; apartheid apologia; the savings and loan scandal; voodoo
economics; record budget deficits; double digit unemployment; farm
bankruptcies; trade deficits; astrologers in the White House; Star
Wars; and influence peddling.

I just arrived in Seoul for the World Editors Forum. I'm on a panel tomorrow to talk about
blogging.
This is my first time in Seoul. It's amazing to me that I've never
been here before. Korea is very close to Japan. I have had a great
deal of interaction with Koreans and feel a fairly strong bond with
Korea. The Akasaka district where my office is is primarily Korean
getting much more excited about Korean Soccer victories than Japanese.
My aunt is Korean and I believe that we have Korean ancestors on my
mother's side of the family. For some reason, I grew up generally
believing that Japan and Korea were quite friendly. I do know that
there is some bad history and the extremists on both sides are
unreasonable.
As recently as March, Korean
protesters chopped off their fingers in a rally protesting Japanese
claims over some disputed islands. Clearly this represents some
strong anti-Japanese feelings. I have recently been interacting with my Chinese friends about their
anti-Japan protests and am in the process of trying to develop some
projects together with them to try to address some of the issues. I am
eager to talk to my Korean friends to find out how strong the
anti-Japanese sentiments are and what might be done to address them as
well.
I've heard a lot about the highly connected, high tech Korea and
have participated in a number of Japanese corporate meetings where
executives were being briefed on how Korea is leading in so many ways
these days. I have also heard that blogging is quite active, but in a
very different style than the US and Japan. Heewon is organizing a
bloggers dinner and I look forward to finding out more about the scene
here.
Unfortunately, my GSM phones don't work here so I don't think I'll
be able to moblog.

It's cold and foggy in Seoul - but I'm all jazzed to do our meeting
today and nerd out with some serious nerds. I'm having the best hotel
access experience of my life. It's so civilized.
My username is my room # and my password is my last name. The
bandwidth is great, it started up flawlessly and it's something like
$4 a day.
Boy do I wish all hotels were this civilized.

Here's a phalanx of troops - getting ready to head off the
