Voodoo Envy M:860 Gaming Laptop Review
Voodoo Envy M:860 Gaming Laptop Review
06/28/2004 08:27 AMIf there's one
thing that Apple laptops have done to effect the PC laptop world, it's
convince everyone that white is a fine color for notebooks. Case in
point: the Voodoo Envy M:860, an Athlon 64 3400+ powered gaming laptop
that, while available in a variety of colors, is being marketed in a
familiar-looking white. Trusted Reviews gives it a few games to chew
on, and it does as well as you'd expect (which is to say, very), but
interestingly they had the same sort of underperformance from the
M:860's Athlon 64 as they did from the recently-reviewed
Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo A1630. Is there something snarling the
performance of notebook Athlon 64s? I don't know, but I'd be happy to
give the M:860 (and its 1,680 x 1,050 screen) a thorough workout.

To Portal or not To Portal? Wrong

03/14/2005 04:55 PMIt seems that the portalization of Google comes up now and then. I
just ran across a this quote on Technosailor: It seems Google is
trying to experiment with elements of portal sites like My Yahoo! but
still trying to remain in the business of purely search and rejecting
the elements of portalhood that it doesn’t like. I’m not
so sure you can be on both sides of the fence. Yeah, I'd agree with
that. You can't be on the...

08/30/2004 12:04 PM Well, they're back. I shot the picture at the right a few minutes
ago. With no warning, PG&E shut off power to do some repair work
from last night's outage. Here's the thing. They know that I was one
of the affected folks yesterday because I called twice requesting
information. Why the hell didn't they call me this morning to warn me?

Marathon Strikes 10
12/27/2004 01:22 AMMarathon, a classic Mac FPS which was said to have rivaled the Doom
series, reached its tenth anniversary this week. The official game has
been long dead since Microsoft purchased Bungie, but a thriving
community has enhanced the popular title and kept it up-to-date. This
year, celebrate Marathon's tenth anniversary by playing Marathon:
Aleph One. If you don't currently own a copy of the original game,
don't forget to download the demo files as well (available on the
Aleph One page).

Three Strikes And Qwest's Out? Probably
Not Yet...
04/06/2005 04:49 AMWith MCI
turning down Qwest's larger offer for the third time, some may
hope that the deal with Verizon is finally set. However, that seems
unlikely as the situation is about to get
very
, very messy. Expect lots and lots of lawsuits to be filed in
short order over a variety of issues having to do with this takeover
attempt. If you thought the battle by Oracle to take over Peoplesoft
got messy, it seems like the Qwest and Verizon courtship of MCI could
top it. The only thing that's likely to come out of it in the short
term, however, are massive distractions for all involved. Competitors
to all three companies should be thrilled right about now.

prematurely discontinued the deal in February 2005.

Pre-Emptive Strikes Copyrights
Pre-Emptive Strikes Copyrights
03/19/2003 10:27 PMMichael O'Connor Clarke just mailed me to say that a
fellow Toronto blogger of his intends (but not really) to sue
the US Government over their mis-appropriation of the name they're
giving to Gulf War II, The Vengeance, to be known forthwith as
Operation Iraqi Freedom.
He casually
coined the term in an earlier blog entry, thinking nothing of it. Now
it turns out that this may indeed be the chosen 'nom de guerre' for
Dubya's illegal and unjust pre-emptive military
campaign.
Any bets on what Gulf War III, when Jeb
Bush goes back to honour his brother and father, will be
affectionately known as?
Actually, I wonder if a bunch of
high google ranking anti-war bloggers 'hi-jacked' the name for the
operation, if that would constitute negative, unpatriotic behaviour?
Does the US Miltary control the web? No. Isn't it ironic that they
invented it in the first place? Yes. I'm not suggesting that we all
blog negative stuff about Operation Iraqi Freedom, perish the thought,
but wouldn't it be interesting if the top 100 searches returned by
Google were pointers to negative coverage? I'm sure we'll see....
