05/05/2004 04:06 AMAbout a month ago, Microsoft posted some of its source code to
SourceForge. SourceForge is a, if not the, major distribution point
for open source software. Microsoft's code was put there under the
terms of the Common Public License, which allows modification,
addition, redistribution - in short, it allows most of the rights and
privileges that we associate with open source software.

06/24/2005 09:35 PMOpen source software is everywhere nowadays -- even in the cautious
offices of political campaigns. During last year's U.S. presidential
campaign, a staff speechwriter from the Howard Dean campaign begged
for Linux on his laptop, according to Zack Rosen, a DeanSpace Web
developer, technical volunteer coordinator and Web radio producer.
Rosen says that the Dean campaign's general manager Joe Trippi was
"the first to have authority to start talking meaningfully about the
concept of 'open source politics.'" Rosen and other Dean and Wesley
Clark campaign alums have staked the future of their new project,
CivicSpace Labs, on the idea that open source and politics can
co-exist in "bottom-up people-powered campaigns."

Stürmerhttp://opensource.
mit.edu/papers/sturmer.pdfAbstractBuilding an active and helpful community around an open source
project is a complex task for its leaders. Therefore investigations in
this work are intended to define the optimum starting position of an
open source project and to identify recommendable promoting actions by
project leaders to enlarge community size in a healthy way. For this
paper eight interviews with committed representatives of successful
open source projects have led to over 12 hours of conversation about
community building. Analysing the statements of these experienced
community members exposed helpful activities that led to the presently
prospering communities of their projects. Summarizing the conclusions
of this qualitative research a table with conditions for successful
open source project initialisation and a subject-level promotion
matrix of community building could be created. They include
suggestions on how to start a new open source project and how to
improve and increase the community of an already advanced open source
project.

04/05/2005 11:50 AM IBM Adopts
Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its
Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a
form of open-source development internally to create technology the
company will sell commercially.
IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a
collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing
and testing new technology.
Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM
Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community
Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company.
These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research
and Global Services, he said."
Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the
so called open source development process have they built into the
Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different
definitions of the open source development process (via

ac.uk/issue39/web-focus/Brian Kelly takes a look at
the FOAF Semantic Web application and suggests it is time to start
evaluating this technology. The term
FOAF stands for Friend of a
Friend. As might be deduced from this phrase one of the key
applications of FOAF is to provide a mechanism for creating links to
one's friends. From the links to one's immediate circle of friends
automated software can be used to process links from your friends,
which can provide a visualisation of 'friends of a friend'. FOAF is a
Semantic Web application which can be used to provide personal
information in a form suitable for automated processing. On a page
created in HTML Web authors often provide personal information, such
as contact details, interests, etc. Such information is ideally suited
for reading but cannot easily be repurposed by automated tools. FOAF
was designed to enable such information to be provided in a form which
could not only be displayed as conventional Web page content but also
to be used for automated processing. The FOAF Semantic Web application
has been added to the Semantic Web Research section of
Deep Web Research Subject
Tracer™ Information Blog. It also has been added to my posting
on
Online Social Networks.

ome.htmlFree/open source software (F/OSS) is software
for which the human-readable source code is made available to the user
of the software, who can then modify the code in order to fit the
software to the user’s needs. The source code is the set of written
instructions that define a program in its original form, and when
it’s made fully accessible programmers can read it, modify it, and
redistribute it, thereby improving and adapting the software. In this
manner the software evolves at a rate unmatched by traditional
proprietary software. For many years free/open source software has
been building momentum. Beginning amidst the technical cultures that
produced the Internet and World Wide Web, it is now causing quite a
stir in the commercial world as large software corporations are
finding themselves competing against commercially available open
source software.
This new demand for free and open source
software has piqued interest among scholars in disciplines ranging
from sociology to economics to social psychology, and has raised
questions in fields of application ranging from innovation processes
to strategic management. As an aid to these scholars, they offer the

information exchange that will lead to a greater understanding of open

In the spirit of free and

community in which information will be freely exchanged, so that
others may further the understanding of open source and its
implications outside the realm of software development. They invite

04/29/2004 11:56 AMEarlier this month we joked about how the new Avalanche CIO co-op was
really
open
source with a $30,000 gate. It appears that the group doesn't see
it as a joke. That's
exactly how they
describe themselves. The interview with one of the founders also
raises some interesting points about how the group is going to avoid a
SCO-IBM situation where some of the software that goes into the co-op
is accused of having intellectual property violations. The guy from
the co-op sort of brushes that off by saying they have a top
intellectual property law firm who will review all submissions to make
sure they're safe. Considering the number of software patents showing
up these days on all sorts of minor software processes, and the fact
that I'd put IBM's lawyers up against any top IP law firm any day and
they certainly didn't expect SCO to go on this bizarre run, I doubt
that's much real protection. If anything, this may end up opening up
the companies in the co-op to more (pointless, of course) patent
lawsuits by revealing their internal software. For instance, the
first piece of software in the co-op was an internal application from
Best Buy. Before this, no one outside of Best Buy really knew what it
did, since it was all internal. Thus, there was almost no risk of
being accused of patent infringment. However, by opening it up
(admittedly to just a few companies right now) they risk someone who
has patents on some tiny process used in their software to come back
and sue them
and any of the other companies in the co-op who
downloads it. Maybe after a few of these types of lawsuits the
companies involved in the co-op will become a bit more pro-active in
fighting against bad software patents.

12/18/2003 01:06 PMVirtual Community Makes Open Source Encyclopedia
Succeedhttp://firstmonday.org/issues/issue8_12/ciffolilli/index.html
An open source encyclopedia seems to defy all logic.
Anyone can contribute -- and anyone can change, deface or erase the
information it contains. Yet Wikipedia is successful for several
reasons. First, it's being constructed by a purpose-built virtual
community, whose members share the same goals and passions. Another
factor is the low cost associated with IT and virtual communities. In
a way, technology has virtually eliminated transaction costs for
editing and updating information. This not only stimulates development
of the community and the project, it provides a full exploitation of
massive collaboration economies. Another secret of Wikipedia's success
is its "creative construction" of information, rather than a "creative
destruction" of it. Initially, some observers expected an endless war
among reliable contributions, as well as graffiti attacks that would
deface and delay the development of the Web site. In reality, that
hasn't happened. Every change made to every article is stored;
unapproved modifications can be undone with a single click. Thus,
hackers and graffiti artists waste more of their time and effort
trying to litter a page than administrators require to correct it.
Through this mechanism of editing and undoing meaningless changes or
graffiti, an evolutionary process is fostered. Among other results,
that means only the best contributions survive.
