According to Chris Fry, StAX JSR lead from BEA, reference implementation of StAX API previewed last November will be open sourced and made available at Codehaus shortly.

Quick update, I'm in the process of moving the RI to codehaus, should take a couple weeks to get all the wrinkles ironed out, then everyone can start fixing bugs :) - from stax_bui lders mailing list

The newest version of my RSS Parser is now available for download. I am really happy about this release. It fixed a lot of things previous versions were lacking. It now has clean error handling, optional caching, and more efficient code. Also, the function can now be called as many times as necessary on the same page. Previously, the function would break when called more than once on the same page. You can download this new version here. I will update my RSS Parser article tomorrow to reflect this update. As usual, please e-mail me any questions, comments, or suggestions you may have.

A while back I read on Dive Into Mark a rant about the sheer volume of traffic people hitting off of his RSS feed were causing. At the time I was developing my RSS reader that is in use now at this site. It's completely written by me, and I'm happy with it. It extracts all of the descriptions, links, and titles out of RSS feeds in any version (atleast I haven't experienced otherwise in my browsing) and returns them in an associative array. Also, it caches the RSS files in serialized format so that it doesn't have to repeatedly hit the servers the RSS files reside on, and subsequent requests do not require reparsing. Instead, it only requests the file if the cached file was written more than an hour and a half ago. But, my RSS parser still did not meet the need described in the above linked Dive into Mark article. Basically, Mark (and others) only want their RSS feeds being requested if they have been modified recently. "Recently" is defined by Mark as 3 hours, which is reasonable. I didn't know how to do this with my RSS parser, so I did some research. I found some information on various sites about doing conditional GET statements with PHP, and now my parser will only fetch the file off the remote server if it has been modified within the last three hours. I am now using this new version of my parser. The parser is not perfect, but I really like it. To view the source of it, click here. An article will follow soon.

New Version of RSS Parser Available

The newest version of my RSS parser is now available for download. You can read more about the parser in my article about it, which has been updated to reflect the new version. You may download the parser here. This new version provides more information for use than the old version did. The old version only cached the Link, Title, and Description items from the RSS file, where this new version stores everything, including Channel information. The only information not stored are element attributes, which should be available in the next release. The RSS parser is now distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. Use the print_r() function after calling the RSS parser to see what is now available.

One of the shiniest new feature of Java 5.0 (aka Java 1.5) is a rich set of concurrent programming classes in java.util.concurrent (aka JSR 166), much of which is a direct port of Doug Lea's Concurrent Programming in Java library.  Since I don't have the luxury of using Java 5.0 yet, I've resorted to using Doug's original library which is, for the most part, functionally equivalent to java.util.concurrent but not close enough for comfort, particularly since concurrency code tend to be very sensitive to minor changes.

The good news is that Dawid Kurzyniec backported java.util.concurrent package to run under Java 1.4 and made it available as open source.  Apparently Sun is letting this happen because it's own code is based on Doug's open source library.

There are some shortcomings but nothing much to cry over.  My only complaint is that it doesn't use the java.util.concurrent package name which means I'll have to update the package names later (simple but still change nonetheless).  But that I can see the technical and legal issues preventing that from happening.  I am just glad someone did this.

If you previously had Java 1.4.1 and the Java SDK installed, the new Java 1.4.2 update from apple will upgrade the Java runtime to 1.4.2, but will remove the previous 1.4.1 Java runtime and SDK without upgrading the JDK. To build Java packages in Fink you will need to go to connect.apple.com and download the Java 1.4.2 SDK (free registration required).
