While we’re on the topic of Panasonic, I’ll
also mention two other new home theater products from the
company.
The “SC-HT06” is a 2.1ch audio system with Dolby Virtual Speaker
(DVS) technology. This is to fool you into thinking you have a real
surround sound setup. The amplifier is provides a total 300W of
output, and has three digital inputs: two optical and one coaxial.
“Dual Amp” technology is the focus of the “SA-XR55” amplifier,
meaning you can provide twice the amount of power to your speakers. It
has features out the wazoo: 7.1ch audio, 192kHz sampling all the way
from input to output, and improvement of mid-range tones using “VGDA”
(Variable Gain Digital Amplifier). You’ll probably find a crapload of
things to like about the SA-XR55, assuming you can afford the 55,000
yen price tag.

JVC TH-SW5 Home Theater System with
Wireless Rears

JVC has a new
set of home theater systems out in Japan that transmit sound to the
read speakers wireless via radio; a radio that, unfortunately,
broadcasts on the 2.4GHz spectrum -- the same frequency as Wi-Fi. The
TH-SW5 otherwise looks like a solid system, but perhaps another model
at 5GHz or 900MHz would be optimal. Or maybe -- stay with me --
user selectable frequency. There aren't plans to release it
here, though, to my knowledge, but I'd hate to be the Japanese
consumer who has to choose between their network and their
speakers.
My dream wireless speakers receive audio and power through a
fixed microwave beam. If you couldn't navigate through the matrix of
flesh-searing invisible conduits, you wouldn't be worthy to
watch the extended edition of Groundhog Day.

Hush Technologies Announces ATX MCE Home
Theater PC
08/30/2004 08:08 AM
Hush Technologies has announced a new version of
their fanless home entertainment computer, this time called the ATX
MCE (for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005). Besides the
addition of the new OS, it doesn't look as if it's terribly different
from any of the older ATX versions, all of which were pretty nice to
begin with, with up to 400GB of on-board storage, some flavor of
Radeon, TV Tuner, 6 channel audio, and WiFi and Bluetooth options.
They're nice looking boxes, too, ready-made to fit right in with the
rest of your AV equipment.
Hush hasn't made the announcement on their site yet (which just
always boggles me; why send out a release to websites if you aren't
driving traffic back to your home page?), but you can take a look at
the existing models. They're basically the same, hardware-wise.

Nvidia's PureVideo promises home theater
video quality
12/22/2004 01:23 AMNvidia today announced the availability of PureVideo. The
technology is designed to accelerate MPEG 2 and high-definition
content on computer systems equipped with an Nvidia graphics card
carrying a GeForce 6-series processor.
The company has been talking about PureVideo for quite a while now,
since the introduction of the GeForce 6800 back in April of this year,
to be exact. However the enabling software was missing so far. Now,
Nvidia has the driver package in place and promises to take video
quality on the PC to the next level. PureVideo is based on a
programmable video processing engine integrated in GeForce 6-series
graphics processors. According to Nvidia, the feature "eliminates
the need for separate hardware or chipsets and takes the load off the
PC's multi-purpose CPU to deliver to consumers, high-quality video
playback at resolutions up to 720p and 1080i".

Apple Raises Bar on Portability, Price,
and Features in a Home Gateway
Apple Raises Bar on Portability, Price,
and Features in a Home Gateway
06/07/2004 03:46 PMAirPort Express from Apple puts audio, print spooler, bridging, and
Ethernet in one tiny package: Apple has released a seven-ounce home
Wi-Fi gateway that's barely larger than a power adapter. The AirPort
Express works with any Wi-Fi device, but it particularly supports
streaming music through a built-in analog and digital audio jack and
USB printer spooling through a built-in USB port on certain later
release of Mac OS X and Windows XP and 2000. The small device runs
802.11g with full WPA support, and handles bridging via Wireless
Distribution System (WDS). Apple guarantees WDS will work only with
its own devices. The AirPort Express can act as an access point and
bridge at the same time. Apple's free iTunes software for Mac and
Windows will have a small update this week to handle choosing a
particular AirPort Express base station's attached stereo or powered
speakers. The AirPort Express raises the bar on features, as it
combines print spooling, audio streaming, and WDS in one form factor.
Similar features are available from many other manufacturers, but
typically only as a single device (audio/photo/MPEG streaming only) or
with limitations, like Linksys's WRT54G which can either bridge or be
an AP, but not both. It remains to be seen whether Apple can find a
broader audience for its product with a $129 price tag when it ships
in July, but its combination of portability and plugs might push it
into the forefront of both the home market and the roaming traveler's
world....

Just when you thought it was safe to put that black
leather trench coat and shiny mylar shirt back in the closet, a
company called Accupix launches a new "virtual theater" display called
MPG-230M. The glasses, when worn, simulate a 30-inch screen viewed
from about 6 feet away, but sadly only accept a composite video input.
The native resolution of the glasses is 800 x 225 pixels, which is a
little bit better than the Glasstrons and the like from the '90s.
No word if the MPG-230M will be available for purchase any time
soon, at least here in the US. Korean importers might be the place to
start looking.

Air travel "security" as theater of the
absurd
Air travel "security" as theater of the
absurd
01/22/2004 12:46 PMUS air-travel security is becoming more and more of a performance of
the absurd, as this very good blog-post on Idle Words, inspired by the
new "No queueing up for the in-flight pissoir rule" points out:
How is this measure in any way enforceable? Is the pilot expected to
divert the flight? Perform a barrel roll at the first sign of a pee
queue? And how, exactly, is the sight of multiple passengers
simultaneously lunging from their seats towards a suddenly available
lavatory an attractive alternative to having a little group milling
about by one of the galleys?
I was filled with curiousity to see if the pilot would perform an
emergency landing at Reykjavik after the meal service, but of course
(inevitably) everyone just ignored the directive, and let the
passengers empty their bladders in peace. On an eight-hour flight with
free alcohol and predominantly Russian passengers, there was just no
other solution.
