Links Galore 01/10/2003 11:02 PM
Worthwhile reading from my Outside Reading section: Mark Pilgrim has focused steadily on Apple's beta browser, Safari for OS X, since its release earlier this week at MacWorldExpo. He suggests that perhaps if the Safari team implemented an intentional bug, where through a simple command in your style sheet, you could tell Safari to not render the CSS command to follow. I think they should worry more about fixing the problems of the browser rather then encourage blocking it, and they do seem to be making great inroads on improving the browser. I've always enjoying reading JimFormation, and I know I'm not alone. Check out Jim's new design, with a truly accurate epithet by Randall van der Woning, proprietor of BigWhiteGuy.com. I have some links in the Outside Reading section that do not necessarily pertain to web standards or many of the other geeky topics I'm hoping to make a living out of. For instance... I've mentioned G.K. Nelson's Stonefishspine many times before, and if you have not read his blog, you must begin to do so. I found out today that Ernie of little. yellow. different. syndicates his site via an RSS feed, which I promptly added to the Outside Reading section. I would also encourage you to make a habit out of reading Ernie's blog, which is often humorous, and always a real glimpse into Ernie's day-to-day life. Every other Monday morning I sit down and read Larry Miller's latest article at The Weekly Standard. You may know Larry Miller from his acting career or his comedy, but you may not know about his funny, intelligent, and insightful views on politics, religion, and life. I first heard of Taylor Mali on HBO's Def Poetry. I watched him perform his flagship poem, What Teachers Make, and I was deeply moved. Read his journal, check him out locally, and feel yourself wanting to be a better person (and a teacher - at least that's how I felt). I'm being attacked by a rather energetic kitten, goodnight.

Mating Dinosaurs, crashed 'puters and
"virus' galore"

Special thanks to the script kiddies who've decided to make me misreable with over 50 virus' coming at me - at a time. And woe be it to the poor slob who's repair shop forgets to put the screwws back in the internal hard drive.

So all in all - Jan. 2005 was my lightest month of blogging - like ever. I think I offended Jason Kottke at some Vloggercon party, my clients are starting to get cranky and my kids finally got their birthday presents - which I had promised them back in November at their Bar Mitzvah.

The good news is that Carl is back, he's married and we're ready to rock the world.

First up - ourmedia.org.

It was great to see Greg Elin in NYC at Vloggercon and Mary Hodder at both Vloggercon and Blog Business Summit.

I also upgraded to MR 3.15 - but swtill no WYSIWYG editing. Anil promised something - but now I can't remember when we get it. He also said I get to come in and pitch open source infrastructure ideas to 6A - I can't wait.

They always seemed like the most likely candidates for becoming a DLA company - and supporting all sorts of new kinds of micro-content standards.

I have my fingers crossed on that one.

AVMA Pet Gadgets 08/08/2004 05:22 PM

040806_PetCollar_025.jpg imageSlate takes a break from telling people to use Firefox and Christopher Bitchens rants (oh man, BURNED YOU GOOD! I gotta get a snack now) to take an entertaining romp through the annual meeting of the American Veterinary Medical Association, chock full of interesting pet gadgetry, including stops by booths selling dog and cat pheromones (and soon, human ones!), poop-grabbing Mutt Mitts, and Soft-E-Collars to replace those awful cardboard cones that convalescing dogs must wear.

And speaking of softies, I think I almost have been convinced to hire on a pug by the girlfriend. Expect the review gadgets to come back a little chewier, manufacturers.

Solar Gadgets 06/06/2004 12:48 PM

sunra.jpg imageWired News has a short regurgitation from Reuters about the increasing number of gadget users who are turning to solar power to keep them mobile. It's not perfect, of course -- cloudy days can still easily double the recharge time of batteries -- but as the efficiency of solar cells improve, we may well see increased ubiquity of solar power for all our devices, especially as flexible, wearable panels become available.

Do You Need A Spare For Your Gadgets?

Do You Need A Spare For Your Gadgets? 03/29/2005 06:58 AM
Stories about how people live via their mobile phones (without backing the data up) and would face serious consequences for losing them are nothing new. While this USA Today piece covers much of the same ground, it includes the story of one guy who actually carries around spare gadgets for the situations in which he loses his gadgets. Having had a laptop hard-drive die three days into a 10-day business trip last year, the idea of toting around a spare laptop whenever I travel sometimes seems appealing (though, I've resisted). Still, will we reach a stage where our gadget bags will need to double in size, just in case our gadgets get lost, stolen or broken? Then again, as the end of the article points out, sometimes letting go of these gadgets can be quite a relief. It's likely that plent y of others would agree.
