FunkDaddy: "I wanted to look at the code of an AppleScript in the Scripts Menu. Normally, I would have to do this by navigating to the script in the Finder and opening it in Script Editor. But I took a wild guess and Option-clicked on the script in the menu, and it opened in Script Editor directly! This makes tweaking my frequently-used scripts really easy."

Replacing Perl Scripts with PHP Scripts

Replacing Perl Scripts with PHP Scripts 11/26/2002 05:12 AM
With the introduction of version 4.2, PHP has started supporting a new SAPI (Server Application Programming Interface) called CLI (Command Line Interface). This facility was introduced to help developers create small shell applications (scripts) with PHP. So, now you can kiss Perl goodbye forever. -- Jayesh Jain

Hear hear. Thanks to my influence, other developers at Natsoft are using PHP for their batch scripts too. Hmm maybe it is because they report to me...

Download of the week: Speed Download 2

Download of the week: Speed Download 2 12/07/2003 04:05 PM
After reading a forum post yesterday inquiring about DSL vs. cable download speeds (specifically Cox Cable), I though I’d write about one of OS X’s more underappreciated applications. Let’s face it. If you’re using OS X, you’re using the Internet; and if you’re using the Internet, you’re looking for one thing: speed. For most people, dial-up just doesn’t cut it anymore, and for some, cable speeds still aren’t enough. While Safari and Camino have taken care of many gripes about page...

Goatse.cx taken offline

Goatse.cx taken offline 01/17/2004 10:57 PM
Goatse.cx was a webserver whose index page contained an incredibly disgusting, anatomically explicit image (if you've seen it, you know what I mean, if you haven't seen it, imagine the biggest squick you've ever had and then put it on a webserver). As a universally squicky image, goatse.cx enjoyed a certain pride of place as the mover behind various Internet sports and countermeasures. For example, large pieces of the slash, the code behind Slashdot, exists to keep pranksters from sending people to the goatse.cx page; every troll's first trick appears to be inlining a copy of the image on a targeted message-board (as Dan Gillmor found out a little while back); and now, one of the image-sharing communities I'm part of has a new fad: showing goatse.cx to people who've never seen it before and taking a picture of the reaction shot to post for general amusement.

A complaint to the .cx registrar has resulted in the goatse.cx DNS being yanked, which means that this page no longer works (of course, "tubgirl," the equally nuclearly repulsive image that you can find with Google if you really want to, is still online). Naturally, a petition has sprung up to bring it back. Link (via MeFi)

In the Trenches with Offline CRM

In the Trenches with Offline CRM 03/14/2003 01:28 AM
The advantages of online CRM applications, such as Salesforce.com, UpShot and Salesnet, are easy enough to see: They are pay as you go, with fees hovering in the neighborhood of $100 per month. And the applications themselves have become quite robust, according to Yankee Group analyst Sheryl Kingstone.

Shop Offline, Buy Online

Shop Offline, Buy Online 12/08/2003 03:34 PM
It looks like the rest of the world is catching up with me. For years, now, my method for buying new books is to go into a bookstore and browse randomly until I found something interesting. I'd flip through the book a little and if it looked good, I'd jot down the name of the book. Later on, I'd look the book up online and see what sort of reviews it received, and then decide whether or not to buy it online. I did the same thing with the last car I bought - test driving at various dealers before making the final purchase online. For years, this was backwards of what most people did. They would research items online first, and then go buy at a shop. However, it appears that I'm not so much of an oddity any more. The latest study shows that many more people are resea rching in stores, but then going to the web to buy. I wonder if there will be a backlash against such in-store browsing. I recently heard about a shoe store that is telling people if they try on a shoe but don't buy it, the store will charge a $30 fee. They did this because people kept coming in and trying on shoes until they found ones that fit, and then went online to buy them instead. This seems a bit draconian, and unlikely to win many fans (or shoppers!), but it does suggest some of the tactics that brick-and-mortar shops may eventually adopt.

The excellent mozilla blog redemption in a blog reports that Alternate stylesheet UI and Work Offline are now back in for Firefox 1.0. There was an furor when these features where uncerimoniously removed a few weeks ago. The added "No Style" feature in the Stylsheet UI is useful for if you want to print a more readable version of sites that don't offer printer-friendly pages. The keyboard shortcut for it is CTRL-SHIFT-D. Try it on this page to see it with no styles! Also, Firefox 1.0 Preview Release Candidates are available for testing. There should be another one tomorrow as well.
