Is Microsoft Downsizing the Tablet PC?

Is Microsoft Downsizing the Tablet PC? 04/14/2005 10:15 AM
First it was the slate. Then it was the PC-Tablet convertible. Now it's a mini-Tablet that can do everything that a traditional Tablet PC can do, plus store electronic books, that could end up as the new gadget on which Microsoft is betting to further Tablet PC momentum.

A prototype of a new devicedescribed by sources as a type of hybrid Tablet PC/eBookhas been making its way around the Microsoft Corp. Redmond campus, according to sources. The mini-Tablet, which measures about six inches by eight inches and features a digitizer, is just one of a number of new Tablet form factors expected to debut in the coming months.

Microsoft rules out Arabic on Tablet

Microsoft rules out Arabic on Tablet 01/28/2004 06:40 PM
Microsoft is not planning to offer an Arabic handwriting recogniser for its Tablet PC operating system for at least another year and a half, Middle East developers heard this week. Speaking at the Microsoft Middle East Developers Conference in Cairo this week, Shiraz Somji, development lead for the Tablet Platform Group, said developing an Arabic recogniser did not make sense commercially. “The Tablet PC market that we are shooting at is the laptop market,” he told delegates. “If you look at the laptop market then about nine languages will cover about 89% of that market. Developing a recogniser is a huge effort. To do it properly for Arabic, we would need at least 10 to 12 million handwriting samples, and we’d need to set up offices in at least two or three different areas just to collect those samples.

On Monday morning, Microsoft shipped an add-on pack for Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 designed at making Tablet PCs more enjoyable by consumers. Dubbed the Experience Pack for Tablet PC, the new add-on features six new utilities that enhance the Tablet PC in fun and exciting ways. The Experience Pack for Tablet PC consists of the following applications and add-ons: Energy Blue theme and Windows Media Player skin - This theme first debuted with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and was previously made available to Tablet PC owners as a separate download. The theme is cleaner and more professional looking than the default XP theme. Ink Desktop - An innovative OS add-on that lets you jot notes and drawings directly on the XP desktop. You can configure Ink Desktop to display different templates--like a note pad, to-do list, or monthly calendar--or to be completely transparent. Snipping Tool 2.0 - A full-featured update to a classic Tablet PC PowerToy that lets you virtually clip information from Web pages and other documents, the new Snipping Tool includes a completely revamped user interface, different clipping styles (including rectangular and complete window), and various paste targets. Ink Art - An amazing natural paint program that is so realistic you'll think you're painting or drawing directly on the Tablet's screen. One stunning feature, the tracing paper, lets you paint "over" digital photographs, leading to artistic interpretations of your favorite pictures, even if you're not an artist. Ink Crossword - A virtual crossword puzzle that comes with 12 puzzles and the ability to download more free and paid puzzles. Ink Crossword includes an optional timer, a letter help feature, and will prompt you when you've entered correct or incorrect letters. Media Transfer - A software-based Windows Media Connect client that lets Tablet PC owners easily download or stream digital photos, music, and videos from other XP-based PCs in their home.

Ruby: Tiny Tablet PC Prototype

Ruby: Tiny Tablet PC Prototype 04/15/2005 09:59 AM

ruby_proto.jpgThis prototype, called 'Ruby,' is being shown off at IDF Japan 2005. It's sort of a weird cross between a Tablet PC and a PDA, with a Pentium M ULV 600 processor and a touch screen—it also runs Windows XP Tablet Edition. It's a pretty slick engineering accomplishment, but will anybody actually want to use something this size?

The A5: Prototype Sub-Tablet 07/30/2004 08:55 AM

A5land.jpg imageGadget Madness brings to our attention a prototype sub-tablet PC called the A5 that is reminiscent of the Sony U50/U70, although not quite as nice looking. While the prototype "runs RISC OS under Windows XP," for most people the "Windows XP" part is all that is going to matter. An integrated 8.4-inch 800 by 600 pixel screen, 40GB hard drive, and detachable keyboard and touchpad round out the unit. Unfortunately, there's no real word on what class of processor it uses, information that is sure to become available if any OEMs decide to actually mass-produce the unit.
