Wi-Fi With Wires

Wi-Fi With Wires 11/10/2003 10:54 PM
d&name=News&file=article&sid=672&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0 ">The companies developing technology that uses existing electrical wiring in a house to build a network seem doomed for failure: When Wi-Fi is cheap, easy and better, why bother using one of these HomePlug solutions? With Wi-Fi you can hang out anywhere and get online, instead of only next to an outlet. Seems like a no-brainer. Before Wireless Distribution System (WDS) became widespread this year, a HomePlug bridge might have made sense to avoid running wire between access points. That's now moot....

Wires? Feh.

Wires? Feh. 08/03/2004 02:48 PM

Sun is doing some research to see if they can effectively create computer chips that don't connect to the board via wires. Instead, they are planning on creating chips that pass data wirelessly via induction.

"It is not that on chip wires are evil. It is just that they are large," Drost said. "The number of pins to get to the outside world has gone up only 5 (percent) to 10 percent a year."

By contrast, proximity communication relies on capacitive coupling--the ability of two electrically charged devices close to each other to interact. Transmitters on one chip can send signals to another. These signals are then amplified. A much higher number of transmitter/receiver pairs than pins can be inserted in a specific area, which allows for more simultaneous connections.

The problem becomes how to keep chips in alignment. If you have transmitters and receivers that tightly packed, then even minor vibration will misalign the inputs, a problem that physical pins don't have to deal with.

Wires, Wireless Everywhere at Convention

Wires, Wireless Everywhere at Convention 07/28/2004 06:24 PM
The NY Times follows some of those wires (and wireless signals) around the DNC's FleetCenter home: This thorough report by Seth Schiesel follows some of the complexity managing wired and frequencies at an event of the scale of the DNC. After reading this article, I'm amazed that anything manages to work. Other stories in this vein indicate that thousands of miles of wire were pulled for this week, while the RNC venue in New York might top 40,000 miles because of some slightly longer distances involved in two spaces being used. The Wi-Fi problem is clearly explained, and it appears that the planners did hope to reserve space for Wi-Fi. I'm guessing that the wireless equipment used by camera operators is incredibly noisy, spewing out far more than is legal out-of-band (slop-over) signal. Because Wi-Fi has such a low amount of legal signal, it's very likely that the electronic newsgathering (ENG) is treading all over its neighbor's space. There should be at least a few clear Wi-Fi channels. The network is apparently geared to handle the equivalent of 3,000 T-1 lines--but tell that to my buddy who not only didn't get his paid-for T-1 line drop, but was told there was nothing that Verizon could do about it....

AudioOutfitters has announced that its new earPod, which provides storage for your iPod headphones and remote control, will start shipping at the end of July. earPod solves the problem of tangled earbud wires by wrapping the wires around a spool and storing the earbuds and plug in a central padded compartment. You can also use the earPod to shorten the wires while using your iPod, and its included e-Clip lets you attach it to your belt, pocket or other convenient location, with additional room on the outside for clipping on your remote control. Pricing will be US$11.99 when the earPod is released.

Court Rules Evel Knievel Is A Pimp;

Court Rules Evel Knievel Is A Pimp;
Knievel Rules Judges Are Bimbos
01/04/2005 08:20 PM
Really not quite sure what to make of this one, but it's too amusing to pass up. Apparently, a few years ago, ESPN posted a picture of famed daredevil Evel Knievel with his arms around two women (one of whom was his wife) with the caption: "You're never too old to be a pimp." Knievel, not realizing this was a (weak) attempt at complimenting him, sued ESPN for defamation. A lower court tossed out the ruling, and he appealed. Now the Appeals Court has ruled against him as well, noting that, based on the context no one is actually going to think Knievel is a "pimp," and, in fact that the statement was supposed to be a positive one, as the slang of the day suggests. Knievel, apparently lacking a sense of irony over this particular case, has responded by calling the judges "bimbos." The full quote is: "They ruled against the law. What good is law in the United States of America if five or six goddamn bimbos are going to rule against it?" You think he intended that as a compliment? Anyway, in the meantime, feel free to go on captioning photos on the web while calling people pimps.

Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules

Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules
09/13/2004 02:14 PM
USA Today is claiming that the rules have changed for resumes, now that they're mostly sent via email instead of snail mail. However, when they get into the details, they sound amazingly like the "rules" many of us learned back in the days before you emailed resumes: focus on results from previous jobs (read: throw in lots of useless percentages to make it look like you improved something), use "descriptive or significant terms" (read: make sure you include the BS buzzwords-of-the-moment to make it through that first pass filter), don't send the wrong cover letter to the wrong company (read: don't be completely stupid), and don't apply "above your skill level" (read: don't waste HR's time so much). I remember hearing all of these years ago as well, and they don't seem any different in this "new age of electronic resumes" as the article would have you believe. Then, of course, there's the biggest recommendation for this supposed new age: they suggest you spam as many companies as possible. Again, has there ever been a time when people were told to send out fewer resumes? If anything, it seems like this strategy is the wrong strategy in the digital age where HR folks are so inundated with resumes that some have found that going back to paper resumes is much more effective in getting attention.

Why Mac Rules, Pt X

Why Mac Rules, Pt X 05/06/2004 08:38 AM
Today, at the office: a guy stands up, and bellows at me in a very astonished voice: "You have the Dr. Snuggles theme song in your playlist!?"

You know, you learn interesting things from people if you peek at their music collection. And iTunes music sharing over the LAN is one of those things that boggles your mind.

I was in a hotel the other day, connected to the local network. I started iTunes and found like six people sharing their music over Rendezvous. So I got to peek inside the heads of complete strangers, sitting somewhere in the building, happily doing their own stuff, while I see and find interesting new music completely effortlessly. It's like listening to everybody else's personal radio stations, except that you get to mix and match and shuffle to your heart's content.
