China Drops WAPI Requirement

China Drops WAPI Requirement 04/21/2004 09:15 PM
China shelves its proprietary Wi-Fi security plan: It's good news for all chipmakers that China has apparently rescinded its June 1 deadline for all Wi-Fi equipment to include a Chinese proprietary security standard only available for inclusion by Chinese companies. This would have exposed international intellectual property to companies most interested in competing with those firms, and would have caused a fragmented world market. Richard Shim broke this story at News.com earlier today, and has an updated version will full details now. The deal came about in Washington, DC, as a result of joint trade talks with China. Neither story mentions that Chinese actions in regard to WAPI and related issues put it in conflict with its membership in the World Trade Organization, a group they had lobbied to join for some years and to which they were accepted with the backing of the U.S....

China Drops Wireless Protectionism, for
Now

China Drops Wireless Protectionism, for
Now
04/22/2004 01:25 PM

  • NY Times: China Agrees to Postpone Wireless Plan. China agreed on Wednesday to give up a plan to impose its own standard for wireless technology, essentially agreeing to join the rest of the world rather than dividing it up.
  • This is good news. China's push for its own standards in a variety of areas is understandable, but the wireless move was blatant protectionism. But don't imagine that China is giving up on its wish to make its own destiny, and to stop paying what amount to taxes to the Intels, Microsofts and other big U.S., Japanese and European companies in all areas of technology. That's a reasonable goal for any nation.

    Palm drops the Mac

Palm drops the Mac 02/12/2004 06:20 PM
According to this article at Brighthand, Palm have announced that Palm OS 6 (codenamed Cobalt) will not support the Mac platform —
...PalmSource isn't developing a Mac version of the Palm Desktop. As the way the PIM apps work has changed significantly, this means Mac users won't be able to HotSync without third-party software.
This is a blow for Mac-owning Palm PDA users, although it's stoked those old fires suggesting that Apple may be ready to announce a PDA of it's own. John Manzione writes on MacNetv2
Apple will deflect this Palm bullet because they will soon introduce a new product that will do for the handheld market what the iPod has done for MP3 players.
A Jonathan Ive-designed PDA? Now I'd love to see that.

    Spolsky Drops the Big One

Spolsky Drops the Big One 06/17/2004 03:48 AM
Joel Spolsky posted an astounding essay a few days ago that I somehow missed. I don’t agree with every paragraph, but every paragraph is worth reading. If I may pick one minor point out for a bit of special highlighting: We’ve had good full-text search technology since the Seventies, and in the last ten years more or less everybody has become a regular user of full-text search. Why isn’t there good built-in full-text desktop search available right now today on both OS X and Windows, out of the box? (Most of the article isn’t about search, most of it’s about why the Windows API is dying on the vine; don’t miss it.)
