The Register is reporting that T-Online, the ISP part of Deutsche Telekom, is talking to Time Warner about buying AOL, though they also get a T-Online person to deny the rumor. Time Warner has repeatedly said that they have no plans to sell AOL, but there certainly are executives there who would love to see it go. Of course, a more likely discussion would be more informal discussions to see if T-Online would want to buy AOL's German (or European) operations, and not the whole thing. However, the article doesn't suggest that at all, and seems to indicate they're looking at the whole thing.

Nintendo Doesn't Believe In Online
Gaming
07/07/2004 12:44 PM
While Microsoft and Sony seem to be betting big dollars on the rise of online gaming from their console systems, Nintendo seems to think they're throwing money away. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata was quoted as saying, "cust omers do not want online games." While I've been a bit skeptical about the space in the past, the growing success of things like Xbox Live suggests that I (and Satoru Iwata) may have written off the space way too quickly. In my defense, my thoughts on the matter came before broadband was so common and before there was any evidence either way. I still don't think all games will go online, but there very clearly is a large and growing market for console-based online games -- and to completely deny that with all of the existing evidence suggests Nintendo has their head in the sand.

McD's Music Giveaway Disappointment

McD's Music Giveaway Disappointment 08/04/2004 09:40 AM

I rarely eat at McDonalds, but while on vacation last week our kids talked us into it as we drove across western Nebraska. My wife ordered a Big Mac, and unbeknownst to me, they had a Sony Connect promo going on where you get a free music download with every Big Mac. Cool!

Then I tried downloading it.

We're sorry.

We know you are interested in using the Connect music store. Unfortunately SonicStage only works on Windows 98SE and above.

We have no immediate plans to support other operating systems at this time. However, we believe this is an important user base and we hope to support it in the future.

Thank you for your interest.

(Funny; I always thought that even Mac OS 9 was a few steps "above" Windows 98.)

So the short of it is that the whole Connect system is dependent on software that needs to be downloaded first. While this really isn't that unusual — even Apple's IMS works only with iTunes — Sony's free SonicStage digital music software is Click here to comment on this entry

Contextual Advertising And Search
Advertising Are Different

Contextual Advertising And Search
Advertising Are Different
08/03/2004 12:32 PM
Apparently, marketers are just now figuring out that browsing and searching are two different modes of web surfing, and people will t reat ads differently in each situation. Some pointed this out quit e a while ago, but thanks to Google and Overture promoting contextually matched ads as somehow being just like search ads, many advertisers expected similar results -- which they're not getting at all. So, now, some advertisers seem to be fighting back and are telling Google and Overture that it's about time they separated out the two forms of advertising and let the advertisers work each campaign separately. It appears that Overture has started to move in this direction, but Google continues to insist that there's no reason to treat the ads differently.

NEC JVC has three new high-definition plasma televisions coming out - two 42-inch models and a 50-inch. One of the 42-inchers, the GD-V422PCE, produces over a billion colors, which should make for a very nice, rich looking picture. They all are nice, of course, as far as plasma goes, plus each is capable of displaying a regular XGA source (1,024 by 760 pixels) if you wanted to use them as a giant monitor. Prices aren't announced yet, but I'd expect something in the $6,000 - 7,000 range for the 42-inch models, and way more than that for the 50.
