TV Execs Hate People Meters Too
TV Execs Hate People Meters Too
04/16/2004 06:15 AMTwo stories just became a lot clearer. Last year, we first wrote
about Nielsen's attempt to use
so-call
ed "people meter" devices to more accurate track media
consumption. Historically, they've used a "diary method" where they
ask people to record what they watch - which is obviously open to
quite a bit of user error (on purpose or by accident). Then, a recent
study by Nielsen saying that
men
were watching a lot less TV drew a lot of angry complaints from
the TV industry who said the study wasn't accurate at all. What
wasn't mentioned at the time was that this new study
was
based on these new people meters. Of course, what this suggests
is that the drop in TV watching actually started to occur a while
back, but Nielsen's old methods didn't pick up on it - though, of
course, that's not what TV execs want to hear.

People Hate Others Using Mobile Phones,
But Happy They Can Do So Themselves
03/14/2005 05:27 PMThis probably isn't all that surprising, but a majority of people
surveyed complain that they're
annoyed by people who use mobile phones in
public places, but at the same time go on to talk about how
wonderful phones are for making it more convenient for
them to
communicate. It sounds like the typical study about drivers where the
vast majority think they're above average drivers. It seems like the
vast majority of mobile phone users think they are better than average
at keeping their public mobile phone conversations private. About 40%
of those surveyed think that there should be a law (which already does
exist in NYC, though, it's rarely, if ever, enforced) saying you can't
use a mobile phone in places like restaurants, museums or theaters.

Adware Company Accused Of Making
Thiefware As Well
07/12/2004 05:39 AMWe wrote about 180Solutions back in March when the company stunned
most people by raising $40 million. The issue wasn't so much that the
company had raised so much money, but that their investors
seemed
positively clueless about what they had invested in. The company
is almost universally hated (by those not investing in it), for its
spyware/adware offerings. A quick search online will tell anyone who
does the slightest amount of due diligence will realize that the
company is trouble. Unfortunately, it appears the VCs in question
couldn't even go so far as to do a Google search. Now, anti-spyware
researcher Ben Edelman has come out with a
new
report detailing how 180Solutions, beyond just being typical
adware that is installed without clear and understandable notice to
the computer user, was also
ste
aling commissions from online affiliate programs, sneakily
inserting their own affiliate codes into websites when a user with
their software installed visited certain retailer sites. The company
denies they did this, but Edelman's report is pretty damning. This
isn't a new idea, of course. We wrote about spyware products doing
exactly this
almost
two years ago, when it was referred to as "diversionware." As
Edelman points out, however, it's a bit surprising that a VC-backed
company would stoop so low.

Making people look bad
05/12/2004 11:27 AMWired News has a great story by Mark Baard about the skilled make-up
artists who create
moulage, incredibly realistic injuries on
people for emergency response training and exercises.
"The wounds' realism (deep, bleeding gashes and
amputations, oozing blisters and burns) help get the rescuers'
adrenaline going, by fostering empathy with the actors who portray
disaster victims."

05/11/2004 12:17 PMA man who felt angry and helpless when the suspect accused of a
hit-and-run accident that killed his brother didn't show up at the
trial,
set up a website with descriptions of the accused
man. He never expected it to actually help find the guy, but at
least it was an outlet. Last week, however, he received an email
telling him where the man was. He forwarded it to the police who
captured the guy a few hours later. Of course, despite the article's
headline, this isn't entirely a "the web found my brother-in-law's
killer" story. It sounds like the only reason the informant knew
about the website was because the local news did a story
on TV
about the website. So, really, the website was only useful in getting
television publicity.

Variables for Understanding Online Communites: Whether or not a
Web community thrives or sputters had always been kind of a
hit-or-miss affair. This article identifies the 12 most important
variables.
The twelve variables we've selected are most likely not
all that exist, just the ones we find most important in our thinking
right now. These variables struck us as important ways in which
communities are differentiated despite the type of software chosen to
carry a given community.

Making Wikipedia Work
Making Wikipedia Work
04/27/2004 03:19 AMMost people, when they first hear about the fact that anyone can edit
a wiki immediately come up with all the reasons why it can't work.
However, there are a number of large scale implementations that prove
that assertion is false. The biggest, of course, is
Wikipedia, and Salon
has an article discussing
how they deal with the occasional vandals. They treat the wiki
process a bit different, and will block and ban certain users if they
fail a "three strike" policy. Still, it's yet another example of a
successful large scale bottom-up project, which established companies
keep telling us are impossible.

regulations. To meet those requirements, I deployed Open Webmail,

02/01/2005 08:37 PMMark Frauenfelder:
I've
written about Johnny Ryan's excellent comics before. His work is
juvenille, hostile, violent, and funny. I don't really know why I like
it. I hate
South Park, which is also juvenille, hostile, and
violent. But I don't think
South Park is funny. Here's an
interview with Ryan on G4techTV.
Do you ever worry about how people are construing your work –
that they may think you’re a homophobe, or a racist, or
anti-religion?
These are sort of elements that are part of us in some ways.
Everybody has that fear of the other or whatever. But it sort of goes
back into my whole sense of humor: making fun of people is funny. I
don’t have any sort of agenda against minorities, or gays, or
religion. I think my comic is self-deprecating in the same way that it
is insulting to everyone. I try to insult everybody, that’s just
my sense of humor. As far as people thinking I’m those
things… I don’t know, I guess it doesn’t really have
too much effect on me since I’m still doing it. It’s all
for the sake of making fun of people and humor – it’s not
some sort of political soapbox I’m standing on.

million gigabytes of data (comparable to a 2 billion-volume

issue altogether.
People have devised many tricks—such as
sending e-mails to themselves or jotting on sticky notes—for keeping
track of Web pages, but William Jones and Harry Bruce at the
University of Washington's Information School and Susan Dumais of
Microsoft Research have found that often people don't use any of them
when it comes time to revisit a Web page. Instead, they rely on their
ability to find the Web page all over again.

Johnny Fox's Freakatorium
06/05/2005 11:42 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Today's New York Times profiles swordswallower/prestidigitator Johnny
Fox, proprietor of the recently-closed Freakatorium, a cabinet of
curiosities in New York City's Lower East Side. From the New York
Times
In January, Mr. Fox's rent went up and he had to close. Now he has
moved his wonders to a farmhouse in Connecticut where the only thing
they collect these days is dust.
His narwhal tusks stand in the attic near a loose pile of taxidermic
heads. His elephant's-foot liquor chest sits in the living room, seen
by no one but himself.
His two-headed turtle lives downstairs in the basement with a sleepy
boa constrictor. Out in the garage - forgotten - are Tom Thumb's vest
and Sammy Davis Jr.'s glass eye.
"I'd love for this stuff to be in New York," said Mr. Fox, a sinewy
and black-haired man of 52. "New York needs this kind of stuff, but
who supports it anymore?"
It is a hard question to answer. Mr. Fox discovered that his
Freakatorium was not the tourist destination he had hoped it would be.
Even with its relatively modest $5 admission fee, it drew only 5 to 15
visitors a day....
He has even thought of changing the roguish name of his establishment
to cater to a different clientele.
"I figured we could call it the Chamber of Wonders, not the
Freak-atorium," he said. "Freak sometimes has a stigma to it. We could
do something family-inviting."
Even at its height, the Freakatorium was never meant to be a profit
center. It was rather Mr. Fox's chance to earn a living while sharing
his obsessions with the world.
