Apple's Next Operating System

Apple's Next Operating System 06/28/2004 02:49 PM

There will be a lot to like about Apple's next operating system, OS X 10.4, aka "Tiger", when it comes out sometime next year. In his keynote today at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, Steve Jobs said Apple will be moving the bar further ahead of Microsoft. The only hardware announcement was several new displays -- as usual, great industrial design at reasonably affordable prices. I'm very tempted by the new 20-inch model that will be on sale next month. But this gathering is for software developers, and the bulk of the talk was about the operating system. There's plenty of interesting stuff here. The best feature for average users will be the built-in search, something MIcrosoft is also working to improve in its next OS, called Longhorn. Assuming it works as advertised, what Apple calls "Spotlight" make much shorter work of a common woe for computer users: finding what's on our hard disk. The ability to hold video conferences with up to four people at once, and audio with up to 10, is another nice upcoming feature. The multimedia folks at Apple have been busy. Jobs spent a fair amount of time talking about the native inclusion of RSS into an upcoming version of the Safari browers, and a "personal clipping" service. There's a special search function just for RSS; I'm not clear on whether it's searching via one of the main RSS search engines, whether Apple will write its own or whether it's only searching your designated feeds. More on that later. I was dazzled by a real advance in scripting: Automator, an application that will make it much easier for regular folks to wire together various functions from various appliations. Great stuff. There's lots more, of course, but the main thing to remember is that this product could be as much as a year (or more) away. Apple's announcements today, so far ahead of the actual release of the software, are designed to get the software developers excited enough to build of these features natively in their own applications. I hope they do.

What belongs in an operating system?

What belongs in an operating system? 11/18/2003 08:05 AM
This question is behind most of Microsoft's recent antitrust problems. Microsoft's defenders often point out that Linux distributions include not just Web browsers and multimedia software, but office suites, graphics packages, and many other programs that are not "part of the operating system." This is true, but in the Linux distribution you can easily replace one browser with another, and you are free to use whatever multimedia playback program you like. And now, although it doesn't seem like a related topic, let's talk about modems and network cards for a moment.

When you can write nearly perfect versions of PacMan and Space Invaders in your favorite productivity application, you know it's crossed the boundary. Of course, treating cells like pixels and implementing the game by changing the background colors probably wasn't what the Excel developers had in mind, but frankly, that's not much different than what the guys writing the original games had to deal with. Wow.

Great post about what Google is up to by Rich Skrenta. He argues that Google is building a huge computer with a custom operating system that everyone on earth can have an account on. His last few paragraphs are so much more perceptive than anything that's been written about Google by anyone; Skrenta nails the company exactly: Google is a company that has built a single very large, custom computer....

Google As The Operating System To The
Internet

Google As The Operating System To The
Internet
12/16/2003 02:07 AM
Now that everyone is talking about the latest Google-trick where you can easily track FedEx or UPS shipments by typing in the tracking number on Google, one more piece of the puzzle fell into place in the "Google vision." Over at Business Week, they describe a world where Google is everywhere. Instead of going anywhere online directly, you could just use Google as the interface. Need movie tickets? Type "Movie" and your zip code and see the listings. Want to buy a Beanie Baby on eBay? Type "ebay beanie baby" and have Google show you all the choices. As the article points out, each one of these types of moves could take away traffic from some other site, taking away advertising revenue and giving it to Google. Clearly, Google is trying to become something of an "operating system" for the internet. It's trying to set it up so that if you want to find anything or run any web application, you go directly to Google and input what you want. It's a sort of super sophisticated command line interface, where you just need to remember a few simple commands - and let Google's smarts figure out the rest. It's an interesting idea, and can certainly appeal to plenty of geeks (including myself). However, there are reasons why the vast majority of people tend to prefer a nice simple graphical user interface rather than a command line - and it will be interesting to see if others (notably Microsoft and Yahoo) figure out a way to appeal to those who are less interested in a command line interface to the world.

A new generation of PCs based on Microsoft's next operating system won't arrive until perhaps 2006, but engineers at a conference in Seattle this week will learn how to build the new machines. The new operating system, code-named Longhorn, is a major focus of Microsoft's 13th annual Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, or WinHEC, tomorrow through Friday at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center.
