Rumor: Nextel Working With Motorola on
"Service Master" Bluetooth Phone
Rumor: Nextel Working With Motorola on
"Service Master" Bluetooth Phone
08/20/2004 06:20 AMOne of our more reliable tipsters had this little nugget to drop.
Take it for what it's worth:
I was talking to guy in a
waiting room while we were both getting our cars serviced. Turns out
he is some sort of higher up corporate level Nextel employee and he's
impressed that my dad's business is on Nextel.
So I said to the guy, "When are you gonna finally get on the
Bluetooth bandwagon?"
He told me they have a Bluetooth phone in the pipeline they are
calling the "Service Master" that they developed with Motorola
(surprise). Basically he said the only reason they are coming out with
it is that Stanley Steamer, ChemLawn, and a few other companies
comprising some 30,000 accounts demanded the bluetooth technology from
Nextel and that's a big chunk of their business so they decided to
keep them happy.
He didn't give a time frame for the release of the phone but
indicated that the named businesses would be the first to get
them.

FCC Gives Nextel Spectrum Shuffle
Approval, But Does Nextel Approve?
07/08/2004 05:39 PMReuters reports that the FCC commissioners voted 5-0 in favor of what
sounded like a Nextel plan to reorganize an ugly band: Nextel owns
tiny slices of a very ugly chopped up range in the 700 and 800 MHz,
and their proposal was to reorganize it so that the public-safety
purposes to which other slices are put can be consolidated and
provided with more reliability. For their part, Nextel would receive a
contiguous range in the 1.9 GHz band, and be less likely to cause
interference in public-safety bands--which many blame not on Nextel
but on the equipment used for fire, police, and emergencies--and have
an easier time in providing cellular coverage at those higher
frequencies. The FCC values the deal at $4.8 billion, but will give
Nextel credit for $1.6 billion in returning the lower-band
frequencies. Nextel has to put up a line of credit for $2.5 billion to
cover relocation costs, which are allowed to exceed that amount. If
Nextel's final bill is less than $3.2 billion, they have to pay the
government the difference. Nextel's response was muted; they had
wanted to pay $1.36 billion. Other cellular operators were complaining
that the deal gave Nextel too much; it looks like the FCC chose this
approach to make it worthwhile to public safety without letting Nextel
off the hook....

Verizon Launches SCH-i730 with Wi-Fi

Uh
oh. I didn't know this was possible: Verizon has released a phone I
want. The Samsung SCH-i730 is a WIndows Mobile device that has not
only an EV-DO radio (I love me some EV-DO) but also Wi-Fi, which many
thought Verizon would remove for fear they might not squeeze every
last testicle dollar from their subscribers. It's $600 and only
available to business customers at the moment, but it's lovely.
I've already got Verizon for EV-DO service with the PCMCIA card. I
wonder if they'd let me add the phone service on, too? I might just
have to see.

11/01/2003 11:50 AMOver at MSNBC.com, Gary Krakow compares three new phones that have
just hit stores: Motorola's new MPx200 (pictured at right) and
GPS-enabled i730 cellphones, and Siemens' stylish SL56 handset. Krakow
gives high marks to the MPx200, which runs Microsoft's new Smartphone
operating system, calling it "one slick device" and noting that it's a
marked improvement over Orange's SPV Smartphone which came out last
year. He didn't have enough time to check out the GPS navigation
features of the i730, but he did manage to find a few moments fawn
over the design of the SL56. Read...

the Attainment of Community Status
05/13/2004 05:19 AMStatus Inertia: The Speed Imperative in the Attainment of
Community Status by Daniel Stewarthttp://opensource
.mit.edu/papers/stewart2.pdfAbstract:This paper examines the role of
tenure in establishing social status within an online community of
free software developers. As tenure increases, an actor's status
becomes increasingly taken-for-granted, thus making it difficult for
actors to generate mobility outside of their current social strata.
The results of empirical analyses suggest that the broader community
plays a major role in deciding one's social position-a judgment that
can be made fairly quickly and decisively. Therefore, members of the
community who desire high status should work quickly to establish a
positive reputation or else run the risk of being cast into an inert
low status social position.

Nextel Still Experimenting
Nextel Still Experimenting
04/26/2004 12:59 PMDespite a trial and now commercial service of a broadband wireless
offering in North Carolina, Nextel is reportedly still examining other
technologies: Mobile Pipeline reports unnamed sources who say that
Nextel is evaluating gear from IPWireless, though not in any public
trials. While it's interesting to note a vendor by name, it's not big
news that Nextel is looking at other equipment in addition to Flarion.
The company has been fairly open about its interest in a variety of
different technologies, ranging from CDMA-based networks to
proprietary gear from Flarion. I've talked to a few analysts who say
that Nextel is very seriously considering WiMax. IPWireless was once
often mentioned by the 802.20 crowd as an active follower but recently
seems to have jumped ship to the WiMax world....
Sprint, Nextel to Merge
Sprint, Nextel to Merge
12/19/2004 03:18 PM Sprint and Nextel announced their $40 billion merger of equals:
Sprint's CDMA technology has been a block to offer push-to-talk (PTT)
services that Nextel has made great profits on. Nextel has no
migration plan for next-generation data services, although they've
been testing approaches that aren't integrated with their iDEN voice
technology. Sprint has already committed to spending billions on 3G
high-speed voice and data systems. In seemingly unrelated news a few
days ago, Cingular dropped its challenge to the FCC proposal that
would allow Nextel to reorganize its scattered chunks of frequency,
giving them new contiguous spectrum in exchange for paying for the
cost of moving the public-safety incumbents to Nextel-vacated
frequencies. It's a multi-billion-dollar deal that the FCC offered,
and Verizon Wireless and Cingular Wireless now no longer oppose it,
and one would expect Sprint and Nextel to accept the deal, although
Nextel wants to pay substantially less. The new Sprint Nextel is at a
rough parity with the subscriber base of Cingular-post-AT&T
Wireless acquisition and Verizon Wireless (all on their lonesome).
Sprint Nextel will have 35 million subscribers, Cingular 47 million,
and Verizon Wireless 42 million. T-Mobile becomes a distant fourth
(about 16 million subscribers) with no data upgrade plan in sight.
This didn't elude the Wall Street Journal, which filed this report in
which T-Mobile notes that worldwide they have about 70 million cell
phone users which allows them to compete on scale for handsets and
network components....

It's status time again. Quick summary: last week I spent most of my
time on Roller 1.2 related issues and the Apache move. This week, I'll
get back to the Roller 2.0/group blogging work.
On the Roller 1.2 front, I made some small enhancements to the Planet
Roller aggregator and did some work to make the blogs.sun.com front
pages a little easier to maintain. I also did a number of deployments
last week to our internal blog server for testing.
Unfortunately, changing the front-pages in a Roller site is not quite
as easy as changing a blog's theme. The front-pages are JSP, so you
can't edit them through the Roller UI and folks who don't know Java
and JSP have a hard time making changes. A number of people have
suggested the idea of having a blog serve as the front pages of Roller
and I think that's a great idea.
Now let's turn to Apache. Our Subversion repository space is ready at
the Apache Incubator, but we're not. Since the Roller 1.2 release is
coming up soon, last week we decided to keep main-line Roller
development in CVS. Once the release is ready, we'll move to
Subversion and branch 1.2 from there. Also: our new mailing lists are
ready at Apache, but we haven't made the move yet.
Roller 2.0 work got short shrift last week, due to Roller 1.2 and
related issues. Since Roller 2.0 lives in its own branch and Apache
won't allow us to bring branches and history along with us (for a
number of reasons, some legal), I had to do some extra work to
recreate the Roller 2.0 branch in Subversion. I managed to complete
that work and resume work on group blogging. I'm hoping that I can
spend the rest of this week on group blogging.
That's all folks. I'm going to cover RSS and Atom in Action
status in a separate post.
UPDATE: I completely forgot that we released Roller
1.1.2 last week, a minor bug fix release.

I post my status every Monday on our internal blog server and I'm
going to start doing the same thing here. Except for the boring
day-to-day operational stuff, most of my status is CC: World.
- Roller 1.1.2: I fixed serveral bugs in Roller's built-in
(Lucene based) search engine last week. I got some tips from Matt
Schmidt at Javalobby, who had done the same but in the Roller 1.0
branch. I hope to release 1.1.2 with those fixes this week; probably
the last release from the 1.1 banch. David Lindsey helped with
testing.
- Roller 1.2: since integrating Planet Roller and adding some
UI unit-testing stuff, I've haven't been contributing much to 1.2,
except for testing and deployment. Roller 1.2 is due out in mid-June,
but it's already running a couple of sites (incuding this one).
- Roller 2.0: I've been trying to focus on work in the Roller
2.0 (the group blogging release), but daily fires and 1.X kept getting
into the way of progress. Plus, I didn't want to create the 2.0 branch
until I had UI unit testing stuff ready in CVS head. Last week, I
started working on the database and persistent object changes.
- Roller@Apache: Apache has the Contributor License
Agreements for all Roller commiters and the grant form, now we just
need some karma. I hope we'll be moving into Subversion in the next
week.
- RSS and Atom In Action: After completing all chapters, I
went back and looked at Chapter 5 How to parse newsfeeds again.
It was really bad and I ended up completely rewriting it over the
Memorial Day weekend. Now I'm focused on implementing an Atom protocol
client and server so I can wrap up Chapter 8.
- JavaOne 2005: I made travel arrangements for JavaOne. I'll
be arriving Sunday before and leaving on Friday after. I'm also
planning on being in Menlo Park for a Thursday afternoon blogs.sun.com
users group meeting. My talk is at 12 noon, Thursday.

upgrade from version 3.x. I don't have a release date yet, but here's
a teaser on what it will include:
One of the TopStyle's most popular features is class
hyperlinking, which enables one-click navigation to the
declaration of a CSS class. However, this feature doesn't currently
support the use of multiple classes (ex: <p class="class1
class2">), nor does it support id attributes -
and both of these items have been requested many, many times.
I'm happy to report that over the weekend I completed work on both
of these features, and they will be included in TopStyle 3.12.
PS: I'll announce the new version here when it's available.

was able to get in touch with Mark Mitchell, GCC's release manager, to

and I had wanted to test whether there were noticable (or any)
differences in speed. Mark reported he doesn't think it is notably
slower than the previous implementation, but speed was not the initial
implementation goal, correctness was. Some speed-up-related code has
been committed and there is always more to be done in that department.

dead simple. Pick a status, enter a message, (or not) and click okay,
or hit enter. Updated some minor back end script handlers, and it's
now built in FacesSpan 4.0, instead of AppleScript Studio.
