A Study of Concepts of Knowledge Management by Anna Dening
http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~kimble/teaching /students/Anna_Dening/Anna_Dening.html

Abstract by Author:

Knowledge management has come to the forefront of the business world surrounded by an air of publicity and a degree of scepticism. However in recent years, this label has been removed, and managers and employees are now discovering the real value of knowledge and knowledge management to their organisations. Globalisation and the spread of multinational organisations are demanding the use of cross cultural management and working practices across several language groups. This leads to the question of whether knowledge management should be practiced in the same way across nations.

This project aims to investigate, by the use of a conversational study and questionnaire, whether differences exist in the opinions of knowledge management across two specific language groups: French and English. The hypothesis that language affects thought is discussed with a view to linking the language spoken to differences in opinions held by an individual. The first outcome of the study was that the hypothesis 'language affects thought' was substantiated. Secondly, the hypothesis that differences exist in the opinions of French and English speakers in the field of knowledge management was unable to be confirmed as correct. A copy of the full report can be found here.

From Mary Jo Foley's M icrosoft Watch:

Gates also extolled the productivity benefits that can be derived from user-empowering technologies such as blogging, RSS, collaboration software and online communities that are integrated into Web sites.

Gates called blogging and the RSS Web content syndication service a "very interesting phenomenon." He suggested that by using RSS as notification system, customers can "get the information you want when you want it."

Knowledge Management: A Guide To Resources On the Internet by Michael M. Smith
http://snipurl.com/5i2z

Knowledge Management (KM) is one of many important topics being addressed by companies in today’s complex business environment. KM has spawned a new legion of consultants, it has provided a new direction for many software companies, and it has given purpose to many technologies that previously appeared to be only expensive executive toys. However, KM is nothing new. It is a synthesis of many ideas which when brought together create an exciting new paradigm of research. KM is multidisciplinary and draws from communications theory, organizational dynamics, and information organization. KM incorporates the concepts of Senge’s Learning Organization, builds on the foundation of intellectual capital management, and draws from business intelligence practices.

The underlying goal of KM is to use the knowledge embedded in the organization to maximize the effectiveness and competitiveness of the concern. This goal appears much too simple to have spawned such a massive movement. However, the current business environment requires new practices to accomplish this fundamental goal.

There are many excellent resources on the Internet addressing the many aspects of KM. The resources listed below offer a wide variety of information on KM provided by academic/research organizations, information portals, consultants, and governmental and nonprofit organizations. NewsGator, the Premier News Aggregator for Microsoft Outlook, and the MySmartChannels Enterprise Weblogging Server Give Users Seamless Access to Important Business Information

DENVER, Colo. -- Sept. 3, 2003 -- NewsGator Technologies and MyST Technology Partners announced a partnership today to provide users with access to MySmartChannels directly from NewsGator, a news aggregator that runs in Microsoft Outlook. MySmartChannels is a business weblogging platform that allows anyone to securely publish information, and invite colleagues and business partners to subscribe to and collaborate on it. NewsGator 1.3 enables users to subscribe to MySmartChannels and other RSS-based syndicated news feeds and have important business information sent directly into their Outlook and Exchange server folders. These tools, used together, are a powerful combination because they allow teams to publish and subscribe to rapidly changing information with the tools they already use.

The first result of this partnership is the delivery of a NewsGator plug-in for publishing content to MySmartChannels, available today from http://www.newsgator.com/plugi ns. This plug-in allows users to securely post content to specific channels directly from Outlook, eliminating the need to use a separate publishing tool. "Making it easy for workers to contribute content is an important factor in maximizing the benefits of an enterprise weblogging platform like MySmartChannels," said F. Andy Seidl, co-founder of MyST Technology Partners. "Integration with NewsGator makes both knowledge contribution and consumption from within Outlook literally as easy as using e-mail - easier, actually, since there's no spam." Using MySmartChannels with NewsGator, enterprise users are able to subscribe to channels that are relevant to their work objectives, increasing awareness of important information and increasing productivity.

RSS (Rich Site Summary) News Syndication is an emerging method of staying abreast with rapidly changing information, and these feeds can be generated in many forms by MySmartChannels. When combined with NewsGator to bring these feeds into Outlook, a uniquely powerful solution emerges. "NewsGator and MySmartChannels is a revelation," said William Stow, chairman of Tsunamin Corporation. "For the first time in my career, I am able to see into the activities and news from all parts of the company.

MySmartChannels provides the information channels for each company department, team or individual to post their activities and discussions, and NewsGator provides the up-to-the minute news feed in my Microsoft Outlook folders."

NewsGator users can monitor secure feeds from MySmartChannels, in addition to the ever-growing number of information sources supporting RSS syndication. News can be sorted, organized, grouped, or searched in countless ways, and features like offline reading make this information readily accessible at any time. NewsGator 1.3 works with Microsoft Outlook 2000 or later, and is available immediately from http://www.newsgator.com. Pricing is $29 (U.S.) per copy, with quantity discounts available. Free MySmartChannels accounts are available at http://myst-technology.com. For information about dedicated hosted services, OEM licensing, or behind-the-firewall deployment, contact sales@myst-technology.com.

DAVE SNOWDEN
ON KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT

DAVE SNOWDEN
ON KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT
05/11/2004 12:13 PM
PKM
One of my peers in the badly-named discipline of Knowledge Management is IBM's complexity guru, Dave Snowden. Last year Dave wrote a paper entitled Managi ng for Serendipity, which I really enjoyed. Dave appears to share my disdain for the context-free capture and 'codification' of people's business knowledge in massive 'knowledge bases' just in case someone else might be able to benefit from that knowledge sometime in the future (assuming they can find it).

Dave's paper explains how senseless this expensive exercise is. I have outlined in my Personal Knowledge Management articles why I think Knowledge Management energies would be much more effectively spent (1) developing social networking applications and competencies, and (2) developing personal content management applications and competencies, focused on the specific, individual needs of the organization's front-line knowledge workers.

In the above-mentioned article, Dave asks the question: If capturing 'best practices' and similar context-deficient knowledge in central repositories is, except in limited cases*, ill-advised, what if anything should organizations be collecting in centralized 'knowledge bases' and what centrally-coordinated programs should be used to encourage learning and knowledge transfer? He suggests three possibilities:
  1. Narrative Databases: Unfiltered repositories in which people can record stories about events that they learned from personally. Dave warns against imposing interpretations and rigid taxonomy on such stories, stressing the importance of serendipitous reading of them. He also sees these as a significant opportunity for recently retired employees to contribute to others' learning. Dave offers a highly-regarded course< /a> in the craft of story-telling.
  2. Social Network Stimulation: Databases, tools and programs that encourage and enable employees to improve the breadth, depth and effectiveness of their personal networks. In a recent article in Sloan Management Review, Rob Cross, Tom Davenport and Susan Cantrell entitled The Social Side of High Performance (available only by subscription) the authors show that effective development and use of social networks correlates more than anything else with high performance rating of knowledge workers.
  3. Disruptive Pattern Breaking: Providing fresh thinking, ideas from unusual sources, and challenges to accepted ideas and procedures are healthy in any organization. By broadening employees' exposure to such material, organizations can stimulate innovation and provide new perspectives that can sharpen critical skills and hence improve work effectiveness and decision-making.
Although many people find Dave's writing dense, even intimidating, I find his arguments to be well-supported, pragmatic and eminently practicable. These three initiatives, in tandem with programs to develop social networking and personal content management applications and competencies, offer the promise of finally realizing the 'Knowledge Advantage' that those of us in KM have been striving for, for a decade.

* Dave acknowledges the value of 'best practices' in internet payment systems and safety procedures in a nuclear power plant, for example.

International Workshop on Peer-to-Peer Knowledge Management (P2PKM)
http://www.p2pkm.org/

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) computing has received significant attention from the side of research labs and academia, largely due to the popularity of commercialized P2P file sharing applications such as Napster, Morpheus and KaZaa. In the P2P model, peers exchange data and/or services in completely decentralized distributed manner. Peers are autonomous, and are free to choose what other peers to interact with, and, in this point-to-point interaction, peers possess equal functional capabilities.

On the other hand, Knowledge Management (KM) is increasingly viewed as a core capacity in order to compete in the modern social and economic environment. Researchers and practitioners agree that those intellectual assets that are embedded in working practices, social relationships, and technological artefacts constitute the only source of value that can sustain long term differentiation, quality of services, innovation, and adaptability. Nonetheless, even due to a debatable success of current KM implementations, still unclear is how such matter should be managed in highly complex, distributed, and heterogeneous settings.

In the last couple of years, P2P and KM have followed different but converging paths. In fact, P2P technologies have left their initial “computational”, “anarchoyd”, and spontaneous fashion to embrace more service level domains and business settings. On the other hand, KM is questioning its centralized assumption based on the implicit belief that knowledge is managed successfully when it can be standardized and controlled. In this sense, it seems that while P2P is looking for value added domains to better exploit its technological potential, KM is looking for a technological paradigm more able to fit an emerging distributed organization of knowledge.

The convergence of P2P and KM creates new challenges for researchers to address: new methodologies to model, design, and deploy distributed KM solutions; theories and algorithms to represent the social and semantic dimensions of a knowledge network; mechanisms to cope with the dynamic autonomous nature of P2P and to provide means to support emergent network self-organization.
