an iPod
12/30/2004 04:31 AM
Cory Doctorow: Phillip Torrone's article on Hack-a-Day explains how to trick out your iPod to get it to record audio really well, bypassing the crippling restrictions imposed by Apple:
apple cripples recording on an ipod so belkin and griffin then have to sell us add-on devices for over $50 that can only record at 8khz, which is all pretty shitty. apparently (the rumor is) apple does this so people don’t use their ipods to record stuff they think we shouldn’t, like concerts, whatever.

but don’t worry, there’s a way around it and you can record at high quality, all for free.

Nvidia's PureVideo promises home theater
video quality
12/22/2004 01:23 AM
Nvidia today announced the availability of PureVideo. The technology is designed to accelerate MPEG 2 and high-definition content on computer systems equipped with an Nvidia graphics card carrying a GeForce 6-series processor.

The company has been talking about PureVideo for quite a while now, since the introduction of the GeForce 6800 back in April of this year, to be exact. However the enabling software was missing so far. Now, Nvidia has the driver package in place and promises to take video quality on the PC to the next level. PureVideo is based on a programmable video processing engine integrated in GeForce 6-series graphics processors. According to Nvidia, the feature "eliminates the need for separate hardware or chipsets and takes the load off the PC's multi-purpose CPU to deliver to consumers, high-quality video playback at resolutions up to 720p and 1080i".

V, Inc. took dealers off site at CES to announce a range of new products, highlighted by a DVD player it claims will play high-definition content. The Bravo D3 home HD DVD Media Player will support the Windows Media 9 video compression codec, which is capable of playing back high-definition videos recorded in WM9 on standard DVDs. The unit outputs signals through component video and DVI-HDCP at resolution levels including the 480i, 480p, 1,080i and 720p formats, the company said. The player is expected to ship in the second quarter of 2004 at a $349.99 "target retail." In addition to using the WM9 compression codec, the player adds the Microsoft/ Matsushita-developed HighMAT format for media-file aggregation and playback management.

01/05/2005 03:55 PM

roomlink.jpg imageKeeping with the fresh announcements of new Vaio desktops and laptops today, Sony has also announced a new version of their "RoomLink" network media player, the VGP-MR100. Because the RoomLink requires Vaio Media Server to be installed on a the host PC, users without a Vaio still seem to be up the creek without a paddle; but those of you who happen to own one will likely enjoy its seamless integration.

Connecting by either plain old Ethernet cable or 802.11b/g, the new RoomLink has added support for playback of HD content (up to 1080i), and now also features compliance with DLNA guidelines (DLNA, "Digital Living Network Alliance," is an industry effort to standardize media communications across home networks). Sony has most likely chosen to throw in the HD support because of the release of their consumer-level HD camera, the HDR-FX1.

Besides these two new features, it looks to be the same RoomLink — it still plays MPEG-1/2/4 (and DivX) and WMV video, ATRAC3 and MP3 audio, and your standard run of image formats.

Lifelike Ultra High Definition Video 06/03/2004 10:20 AM

times_uhdv.jpg imageHey, who told the Times' Circuits section about something interesting? You made us miss a incisive column they were going to write about why spam is bad how some people like the iPod. Instead, we got this profile of Japanese broadcaster NHK's work to develop Ultra High Definition Video (UHDV), the 7,680 by 4,320 pixel resolution television standard that aims to hit 'as good as really there' levels of visual fidelity (you know, the kind of quality so good that it makes people puke from watching it. The awesome kind, I'm saying.) Take that massive resolution, add a 60 frame per second refresh and 22 channels of surround sound ("10 speakers at ear level, 9 above and 3 below, with another 2 for low frequency effects") and you end up with video files that end up taking up 3.5 terabytes of storage for just 18 minutes of footage. Don't expect UHDV anytime soon, of course. NHK started developing HDTV, which is just now taking hold, in the 1960s. (Thanks, Jeffrey!)
