quarters of office workers in an impromptu man-on-the-street survey
were willing to give up their passwords when offered the bribe of a

To Spare In Asia

Vertu, the Nokia spinoff, trying to become the "Rolex of mobile
phones," which they prefer to call "instruments" rather than the
pedestrian "mobile/cell phones" or (the almost vulgar) "handsets," is
apparently
doing well selling
their $5,000 to $32,000 phones in Asia. This, of course, is even
though such phones tend to have
noticea
bly fewer features (even if what features they do have are gold
and diamond encrusted). Of course, the Vertu folks have heard that
before, and are ready with the response that a fine Rolex often has
fewer features than some cheap digital watches. Also, one last note,
for those of you looking to shell out five grand or so on Vertu's
cheapest phone: "Don't say cheapest. Please say entry level."

Plenty to do outside of Macworld
01/05/2005 01:25 PMAs San Francisco gears up for next week's Macworld Conference & Expo,
those heading to the show are finalizing plans for times for off-site
activities.
Now in its tenth year, the Hess Memorial Events List offers a
comprehensive list of events surrounding Macworld, including book
signings, parties, presentations and other special events. Those who
wish, may also sign up for the Hess Party and Event List Newsletter to
receive notices of events as they are announced.
Anyone interested in meeting other Spymac members, mac_daddy1704 (Adam
Jackson) has put together a list of activities. Find out more about
what Jackson has organised for members to meet up and get to know each
other while exploring San Francisco during Macworld week from his
posted itinerary.
San Francisco is full of free Wi-Fi locations, and list of San
Francisco's Wi-FI hot spots could be useful for those on the go, or
for those who don't want to pay for hotel internet access while in the
city. A map of free Wi-Fi hot spots can be found at Bay Area FreeFi.
No trip to San Fransciso would be complete without a trip to one of
San Francisco's Apple stores. During the week of Macworld, the Apple
Store San Francisco and Stonestown will be offering presentations on
iPhoto, GarageBand, Mac OS X, iMovie, iPhoto, Final Cut Express, .Mac,
and iPod and iTunes throughout the day, as well as several workshops
and "Meet the Author" events. Driving directions, addresses and phone
numbers, as well as the full calendar of events can be found on the
Apple retail store page.

02/11/2004 09:54 PMStacy Holland is a California-based executive recruiter who
specializes in finding people with Linux-related skills. Her business
card has her photo at the top, and beneath her photo it says, "The
Linux Lady." She started working with Linux people (and using Linux)
in 1999, and decided to concentrate on Linux because, she says, "It's
a very exciting, close-knit family of technically-motivated,
interesting people." This doesn't mean every NewsForge reader should
immediately send Stacy a resume. She only recruits management types.
But she has plenty of career advice for coders (and others) who want
to become top management, along with tips on how to ride the waves of
today's shifting IT job market.
No Channels, But Plenty To Watch
No Channels, But Plenty To Watch
07/02/2004 06:02 PMFor years, the joke has been that we kept getting more television
channels, but there was consistently less on TV. It used to be that
the idea of having 100 channels was amazing, but now people have a few
hundred channels to choose from on many TV systems. However, the
latest report from Nielsen says that, for the first time ever,
the
average number of channels available has dropped. TV execs
are freaking out and want a recount. Some are blaming things like
TiVos for the mess, but Ernest Miller (at the link above) makes the
argument that the concept of "channels" is going away thanks to the
internet. People don't want more "channels" -- they want more
interactivity and control, and you just don't find that with TV these
days.

with 42% of complaints concerning the crime (up from 40% the year

despite all this identity theft, we still haven't done much to prevent
it. It still seems like most lawmakers and authorities don't see it
as a serious problem.

Plenty Of Legal Downloadable Music Now
Plenty Of Legal Downloadable Music Now
05/27/2004 12:11 PMFor a totally arbitrary, but supposedly "symbolic" milestone, the
global music industry is celebrating that there are now
over 100
legal music services available. Don't ask what kind of sites make
it to the list, that's not the important part. The important part is
that now music lovers have more music formats to choose from than
ever. Woo hoo! So instead of making it easier for people to download
music in a simple, transferable format, we now have a bunch of
different formats that we have to track down from over 100 sources.
Sounds like progress to me.
