Mmmm... 12/17/2004 06:33 PM
I had no idea you could orgasm while eating. This eel is simply so good, that it literally melts on your tongue and causes shivers down your spine. The fish is incredibly fresh and rich in taste, and it's even relatively cheap.

It's the Tokyo Fish Market, the largest fish market in the world, and it has to be seen and felt to be believed. Calling it "busy" would be a gross understatement.

Mmmm, pie!

Mmmm, pie! 07/24/2004 05:53 PM
Well, looks like I'm going to be eating pie. I didn't get my translator done and, while Leo did some damned impressive work, he didn't get finished either (in large part, I suspect, because I didn't get the translator finished back at the beginning of June as I'd originally planned) so I need to scare up an oven for a while. I figure if I'm going to get pasted with a pie, it's going to be a good pie, and I don't like the no-bake Key Lime pies as much as the baked one. I'm going to work up a...

Mmmm, chunks

Mmmm, chunks 03/17/2005 03:16 AM

Some new research is showing that the number of things humans can hold in our heads while solving problems is fairly small, three or four things at the most. Chunking makes it possible to remember more complex tasks:

It's difficult to measure the limits of processing capacity because most people automatically use problem solving skills to break down large complex problems into small, manageable "chunks." A baker, for example, will treat "cream butter, sugar and egg together" as a single chunk -- a single step in the process -- rather than thinking of each ingredient separately. Likewise she won't think, "break egg one into bowl, break egg two into bowl." She'll just think, "add all of the eggs."

I wonder how much the process of learning is just chunking task variables into larger and larger bits, building layers of abstraction the way a programmer might build an OO program.

Mmmm, torrents!

Mmmm, torrents! 04/27/2004 03:53 PM
So, I've been fiddling around with BitTorrent and all the variant clients. And... I like it. A lot. The shared downloading and easily resumable downloads make it a keen thing indeed. It turns out that BitTornado, one of the variant clients, does apply a global rate cap if you're serving multiple files up. This is good as Bittorrent clients'll eat all the available bandwidth, and then some, if given the chance. Not a huge problem for client-only systems, or systems with big upstream pipes, but for me with a smallish (192K) upstream pipe, well... running multiple torrents wouldn't be an...

Opiates and Tacos. Mmmm. 06/14/2004 12:49 AM
A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing?Walgreens, a nationwide drugstore chain, has been unsuccessful in obtaining city approval for a new store in a south Austin neighborhood. Now, they're trying a new approach:
Along with plan revisions and numerous neighborhood meetings, they made public in February their intention to build a permanent home for a nearby icon, Maria Corbalan's Taco Xpress.
—Austin American Statesman, 6-13-04
...and they've hired a political consultant, reportedly with green leanings and a history lobbying the city of Austin, to drum up support for this cause (specifically the Maria's Tacos portion of their strategy). Insidious? Benign? Is this a new trend?

Want Fries With That Outsourcing?

Want Fries With That Outsourcing? 07/19/2004 02:49 AM
theodp writes "The NY Times reports that even restaurant jobs are not immune to outsourcing. Pull into the drive-through of a McDonald's just off U.S. 55 near Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and the person taking your order is more than 900 miles away in a Colorado Springs call center. A McDonald's IT VP says it is 'way, way too early' to tell if the call center idea would work across the chain's 13,000 U.S. restaurants." The claim is that by centralizing this service, it reduces the error rates and gets people through the drive-through faster -- though, it's not entirely clear why that's true.

Cory Doctorow: Stefan sez, "With Antwerp named as World Book City in 2004, residents and visitors were being invited to create a biography of the city by SMS. On the 19th September, a selection of the submitted impressions have been compiled into a booklet combined with the focus on the different text points and giving an alternative view on Antwerp and its districts. Microsoft Integrate Belgian eID into MSN
Messenger

Microsoft Integrate Belgian eID into MSN
Messenger
02/01/2005 09:39 PM
Popular messenger resource Mess.be is reporting that Microsoft will soon announce plans to incorporate the Belgian eI D system with MSN Messenger. An eID, or electronic ID, gives users a trustworthy way of identifying themselves online and can be used for a variety of means. The eID contains a electronic chip like modern credit cards, and is gradually replacing the existing ID card system in Belgium.

"The eID is gradually replacing traditional identity cards and by December 31st of 2009, all citizens over 12 who reside on the Belgian territory should own the chip-equipped card. Just like the classical ID, the eID contains your photo, surname and first names, sex, nationality, place and date of birth, signature, national number as well as the validity period of the card. But all this information (including the photo) will also be electronically stored."

It's not known exactly how the system will integrate with MSN Messenger; card readers, although the most obvious solution, seem somewhat impractical for home users. The news was announced today by Microsoft chairman Bill Gates who is on a trip to Belgium; Gates is slowly making his way to the European government where he will be meeting with EU representatives to talk about the ongoing case against Microsoft. The eID system in Belgium would appear to offer the kind of solution that Microsoft tried to introduce (but failed) with Passport; it offers a variety of features based around the central idea of a single "sign-on" mechanism.

Gate's hinted at the possibility of other countries adopting a similar system, yet it is not known specifically which. In the UK, where the government has plans to introduce a similar ID card system, the issue is strongly fought against by privacy advocates and is viewed in a poor light by the public.

How 'bout some freakazoid fries to go
with that Frankenfish?

More chromosomes, more better! BoingBoing reader Roland writes:
Phil Mackey is the general manager of the Mt. Lassen Trout Farms. His 30-pound rainbow trouts are hatched from eggs 'manipulated to produce fish with three sets of chromosomes instead of two.' The Los Angeles Times reports about these freakoid fishes (free registration needed), called 'blasphemy' by some purists because of their strange proportions. The third set of chromosomes renders the trout sterile, 'allowing them to conserve energy that otherwise would be spent on the development of sexual organs or mating,' and so to take more weight. This overview contains additional details about what is a good money-making business and a photo of one of these gargantuan rainbow trouts. Now I repeat my question: would you eat such a 'Frankenfish'?
