The Man Who Loved Only Number
The Man Who Loved Only Number
11/18/2003 05:52 AM Paul Erdös
(pronounced Air-Dersh) was the most prolific mathematician of all
time. He wrote almost 1500 papers with many others, leading to the
creation of the
Erdös
number, connecting mathematicians to each other by way of their
co-authored papers. Even
a horse
has an Erdös number of 3. He also had his
own language - if a person
had "left", they had died, but if they had "died",
they had stopped doing mathematics.

Something you loved in Paris
Something you loved in Paris
04/09/2005 07:53 AMIt's hard to believe one quarter of my time here in Paris has passed
already. I don't feel like I've even begun to do all the things I
want, never mind the things I don't know I should be doing! Before
it's too late, I'd like to hear some recommendations for interesting
things you've done or experienced in Paris (or France, for that
matter, if I could find the same wine in Paris, etc.).
Is there a little restaurant you loved? An amazing unpasteurised milk
cheese you tasted once? A small store that sold lovely little things?
Something you just don't think I should miss while I'm here? Comments
are open, share what you will. Thanks!

The most and least loved gadgets
12/05/2003 01:53 PMCNET has put together a reader poll of the least loved and most loved
gadgets of all-time. Topping the list of the most loved gadgets:
Voodoo's appropriately named Envy M460 laptop (though the conspicuous
absence from the top 5 of a single Apple product must be duly noted).
And what forlorn gadget tops the list of the least loved, you might
wonder? Why Nokia's N-Gage gamephone, of course. Read [Thanks,
Ethan]...

Everyone in Seattle has one or two
Richard Peterson stories--he is well
known and well loved.
05/04/2004 02:27 AM
Richard Petersen a Seattle street musician... an
emotionally impaired savant with encyclopedic recall who taught
himself the trumpet and piano by studying a production LP of musical
cues from the obscure early-fifties television show Sea Hunt has
been a touchstone in many Seattle lives for years. He has played
trumpet outside of concerts, sporting events and blockbuster movie
premieres with a can labeled "No Canadian Coins" at
his feet for at least three decades. He is ubiquitous--apart from
agoraphobics, the bedridden and those chained to a basement wall,
everyone in Seattle has one or two Richard Peterson stories: he is
well known and well loved. Here,
Irwin Chusid, on an
Incorrect Music Hour entitled
Music everyone at
work can agree on, eternally plays--albeit on RA--Peterson's
The Enemy (Is on the Radio Singing My Song) and
After The
Gold Rush from
Richard Peterson's First Album. His first
album did well--he was big in Japan. He has four albums out. His
My Second Album is the
hidden song on the Stone Temple
Pilots
Purple. He has put four albums out. And now there is
Big City Dick: Richard
Peterson's First Movie--a
well received documentary.

"Brandon Teena lived and loved as a man.
For that, she paid with her life."
12/31/2003 03:58 AM "Brandon Teena lived and loved as a man. For that, she
paid with her life." Exactly ten years ago today ,
John Lotter and
Tom Nissen hunted down Teena Brandon on a quiet farm near
Humboldt, Nebraska (just west of
Falls City) and brutally murdered her
along with two of her friends (Lisa Lambert and Phillip DeVine),
leaving only an eight-month old baby at the bloody crime scene. They
had raped her that Christmas and when she reported it to Richardson
County Sheriff, Charles Laux (currently working at the Tecumseh
prison, where Lotter is ironically housed), she was subjected to a
humiliating line of questioning that the Nebraska State Supreme Court
would later call "beyond all possible bounds of decency".
No action was taken to apprehend the cowardly pair until it was too
late. [more inside]
