Bad Weather Halts Launch of NASA Mercury
Satellite
08/02/2004 12:23 PM
Tropical Storm Alex caused the delay of NASA’s MESSENGER Mercury satellite today. NASA has announced that they will try again at 2:16 a.m. EDT on Tuesday. By that time NASA expects the storm to have cleared out. It has been nearly 10 years since NASA launched a satellite to Mercury, and I can hardly wait to see what images MESSENGER will be sending back in the future.

NASA has waited three decades for a second look at the planet Mercury, but now will have to wait at least one day longer as stormy weather on Monday kept its MESSENGER Mercury satellite on the launch pad. Tropical Storm Alex dumped torrents of rain on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station throughout the day leading up to the scheduled lift-off, though launch weather officers had predicted the storm would move far enough north to allow the Boeing Co Delta 2 rocket to blast off.

But as the countdown approached lift-off, heavy anvil clouds continued to envelop the Cape and NASA scrubbed the launch for the day. NASA said it would try again to launch MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) at 2:16 a.m. EDT on Tuesday. Weather officers predicted a 70 percent chance of favorable weather. "Tropical Storm Alex should be out of the way tomorrow and improve the situation at least somewhat," said NASA spokesman George Diller.

NASA Autonomous Spacecraft Ready to Test 04/04/2005 01:35 PM
A New Scientist article says that NASA hopes to launch a fully autonomous test vehicle on April 15th. The robot probe is called Demonstration of Autonomous Rendezvous Technology (DART). DART's goal is to do what many robots here on Earth are doing these days: GPS-guided waypoint navigation. Over a 24 hour period DART will move through 52 steps of direction and velocity changes to approach an experimental satellite. GPS will be used to get to the general area and then a laser sensor system will be used to move within 5 meters of the satellite. For more information see NASA's DART factsheet (PDF format).

Einstein flip 01/05/2005 06:31 AM
David Pescovitz: Cambridge physicist Helen Czerski and BMX pro Ben Wallace have collaboratively designed a new bike trick in honor of the centenary celebration of Einstein's most influential scientific publications.
In the stunt, 18-year-old Wallace, a competitor in extreme sports events around the world, launched off a six-feet high ramp and spun backwards through 360 degrees while simultaneously folding his bike underneath him in a move known to BMX devotees as a ‘tabletop’. At one point, onlookers saw Wallace upside down, travelling at 15mph, with his head 12-feet off the floor.

Czerski, a keen sportswoman and diver herself, said: “I spent a lot of time looking at the physics behind various stunts, trying to understand the limits of what is physically possible to determine how far we could push the parameters with our new creation. I then tested our ideas using a computer simulation to plot a new stunt.”

The stunt draws upon a variety of physics theories including the conservation of angular momentum and Newton's laws of motion.
