01/29/2004 05:03 PMWhoa. People I know are in the Apple Music store. I can pay to
download last year's Fray Cafe and the 2001 Fray too (I can buy Lance Arthur and Mena Trott for 99 cents!). The Brad Sucks album is there too (psst: you can download it from his
site for free, and it's unencrypted or buy the CD direct from him like
I did). I even see a search for "Scott Andrew" is turning a song up
from the Fray CD, with hopefully more to come.

09/03/2004 02:40 PMJeremiah writes
"Amidst the public ballyhoo about how rampant P2P piracy is costing
the music business its very life (gasp! NO!), BMI announced it collected a record
level of revenue and royalty payout to its artist members. From
their press release: "BMI has reported revenues of $673 million for
the 2004 fiscal year, an increase of nearly $43 million, 6.8% over the
prior year. Royalties of more than $573 million were distributed to
our songwriters, composers and music publishers, an increase of $40
million or 7.5% from the previous year, and the most ever paid by an
American PRO." Another interesting tidbit: "During the period
1995-2004, BMI had an average annual revenue growth rate of 9%..." If
I read this right, BMI has been reporting solid growth over the last
nine years, which makes me question the industry's claims about P2P.
Either P2P ate into their growth (not mentioned), they found a way to
cope with it (plausible), or it may actually help music sales.
Whatever. Reminds me a bit of a spec I did for a life-insurance
company's radio ad: Money
, Money, Money (mp3 file)."

Money 2005: Microsoft Unveils Simplified
Approach to Financial Management and
Helps People Make Sense of Their Money
09/21/2004 08:41 AMMarking the largest development effort for Microsoft(R) Money since
the personal finance software was launched 13 years ago, Microsoft
Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced Microsoft Money 2005 Premium,
Deluxe, Standard and Small Business. Completely rebuilt to simplify
daily financial tasks, Money 2005 is designed to answer the growing
number of consumer requests for a simple solution that addresses the
three primary areas of financial concern: tracking account balances,
monitoring spending and paying bills. Consumers today have less time
than ever to spend managing their finances, which has contributed to
the number of American households banking online -- due to its
convenience and efficiency -- reaching nearly 33 million.(1) Money
2005 builds on this trend by helping people access all their accounts
in one place and providing automated tools that reduce or eliminate
the manual entry required by traditional personal finance software.

Hobbit bones in bad shape
Hobbit bones in bad shape
03/23/2005 01:19 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Sadly, the bones of BB mascot Homo floresiensis were apparently
terribly damaged by Indonesian scientist Teuku Jacob who
"borrowed" the bones for quite some time and was extremely
reluctant to return them. Jacob was not convinced that Homo
floresiensis is a
new
species of "little people" at all, but rather a deformed pygmy.
The scientists who discovered the bones claim that the remains were
trashed when Jacob's team tried to make rubber molds of the delicate
bones. From USA Today:
"The equivalent in the world of art would be somebody slashing the
Mona Lisa and then trying to fix it with chewing gum," says
paleontologist Tim White of the University of California-Berkeley, who
was not on the discovery team.... (Pesco's profile of White here.)
"If some breakage took place on any bone, it must be during the
transport in Yogyakarta or from Yogyakarta to Jakarta," Jacob says.
"Both mandibles were intact until the last minute in our lab, as
proven by photographs taken on the last days." He did not respond to a
request for the photos...
Discovery team member (Richard) Roberts scoffs at the notion that
travel caused all the damage: "Like the addition of a glued-on
chin?"

Thirty Years and 35 Broken Bones Later
Thirty Years and 35 Broken Bones Later
09/08/2004 02:10 PMThirty years ago today, Evel
Knievel attempted to jump the Snake River in Idaho. I have vague
memories of going to the pay-per-view to watch this historic event and
I still have the tickets to the show to prove I was a pack rat even
at the age of six. He didn't have great success that day and within a
couple of years, Evel was headed to retirement at the age of 38.
A commentator at the time said that after his jump he would either
be "an American hero or a dead screwball." I'll go with something in
between. How about American Screwball? It's truly a miracle that he's
still alive thirty years later. I think every American boy raised in
the 70's idolized this guy. He was truly an original.
