Intel, HP and others unveil a group to promote grid computing. But some wonder if another such organization makes sense, and so far, biggies IBM and Microsoft haven't signed on.

Google Compute for Everyone!

Google Compute for Everyone! 10/23/2002 05:14 PM
I'm receiving lots of reports that the Google Compute feature has been enabled on all Google Toolbars. Google Compute uses your computer's spare processing time to solve problems if global significance. The current project, Folding@home, has your computer simulate protein folding, a tasj important to understanding and potentially curing Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other diseases. The Folding@home project recently reported their first success. In other words, this is great news! All of those little Google Toolbars around the world will be helping to cure serious diseases in their free time!...

"On the Web but off the record" does not

"On the Web but off the record" does not

When you post something on a public weblog, you're posting it to the open Web, which is to say, you are making it public to anyone who follows a link to it. So I was a little taken aback, as I followed the blogosphere chatter over the Microsoft-G roove deal (here's the commentary by Groove investor and former board member Mitch Kapor), to come upon this comment by Ed Brill of Lotus / IBM.

Brill labels his post as a "not-for-quote-by-press observation." He boldfaces the phrase, so clearly he means it seriously, he's not joking. In a follow-up post he explains that "the posting isn't my complete perspective on the announcement. ... In a press interview, I'd offer a broader view of the deal, and, more importantly, put it in the context of what we at IBM/Lotus have to offer the market."

But, um, Ed, you've posted words on the Web that are readable by hundreds of millions of people. I'm afraid the cat's out of the bag. If a reporter (or anyone) wants to quote you, you can't say, "Sorry, that was off the record." If you don't want to be quoted, post your comment in a private forum! Put it in a private e-mail labeled "Do Not Quote"! Call your friends and tell them what you think, and don't let any reporters on the line! If you need time to compose your "complete perspective" on an announcement and don't want your quick initial scribblings to be quoted, don't post them.

This is a small point, and there's nothing particularly incendiary in Brill's posting that would cause any fuss. I'm just finding it impossible to get my head around the oxymoronic notion of a public Web posting that is "not-for-quote-by-press."

UPDATE: Read Ed Brill's reasonable response. Looks like, as an IBM employee, he's feeling his way through this complex and still-evolving landscape.

Wow. Google Compute

Wow. Google Compute 11/13/2002 07:09 PM
Wow. Google Compute I just saw on my Google toolbar, a "New" button, which when clicked gives this explanation: Put your idle computer time to good use Google would like to request your help on Google Compute, a new feature for the Google Toolbar. By turning on this feature, you can allow your computer to work on complex scientific problems when it would otherwise be idle. The work it does is automatically sent via the Internet to researchers who combine it with information sent by thousands of other users. The first beneficiary of this effort is Folding@home, a non-profit academic research project at Stanford University that is trying to understand the structure of proteins so they can develop better treatments for a number of illnesses. In the future Google Compute may allow you to also donate your computing time to other carefully selected worthwhile endeavors, including projects to improve Google and its services. [ Go ] [ FAQ ] Is this really new or did I miss it when it came out and my toolbar was "retro".

Group wants P2P files to pay. 12/10/2003 10:16 PM
CNet: Group wants P2P files to pay. "The Content Reference Forum is hoping to create a kind of intelligent file that can be distributed through file-sharing networks like Kazaa, Web pages, e-mail or almost anywhere else online. Instead of containing a song or movie itself, the file would set up a process that automatically delivers files in the right format and potentially triggers an automatic payment system that could be changed moment to moment by the content distributor." The P2P aspect looks bogus; why would I share one of these reference files? Why would I try to download legitimate content through Kazaa? If I want legitimate content I'll go to the official source.

There are bad weeks and there are bad weeks, but few weeks have been so disastrously bad for the SCO Group as this one has. Yesterday SCO CEO Darl McBride was gaily flinging yet another open letter at the open source community. Let's take a look at a few of the things that went awry after McBride released that letter.

Blue Man Group

Blue Man Group 10/29/2003 01:15 AM
I went to see Blue Man Group as couple of nights ago with my girlfriend Karen and her family. My two word review: very cool. The opening acts were Tracy Bonham, who plays a wicked fiddle version of Led Zeppelin, among her other musical talents, and Venus Hum, which was more like Venus Ho-hum with their lead singer's voice barely audible on the first song and an incomprehensible drone or whine on the other tired techo songs. You can share in some of the crapiness by visiting their twitchy website. The concert used huge video screens to have the audience do Rock Concert Movements such as #1 which is of course the head bob, and #3, which is the downward jump. Blue Man Group managed to simultaneously mock rock concerts, with a sarcastically large backing band, and throw a pretty good concert, all while keeping their trademark inventiveness and visual eye-candy intact. I was worried for a second when they brought Venus Ho-Hum out again, but even they couldn't ruin a piece together with Blue Man Group that was a re-working of Cream's "I Feel Free". The ending was a resounding version of Baba O'Reilly that worked beautifully with Tracy Bonham playing some wicked fiddle. No, I don't have pictures. I'm not that guy....

FBI Takes Down Warez Group 04/22/2004 08:00 PM
An update to the earlier story we had on a schoo ls being raided by the FBI for sharing music files, here's the news on a larger FBI operation to shut down a larger software, music and movies warez group. This makes more sense than just going after file sharing, but it still makes you wonder. There is this huge terrorist threat thing going on right now, and you would think that it might make more sense for the FBI to protect us from being blown up than to worry about people sharing music files that they can probably get on file sharing networks anyway.
