Sony will support MP3 in portable
digital music players
09/23/2004 11:15 AM
Xeni Jardin: Sony confirmed yesterday that it plans to add native MP3 support to digital music players, in a move that will likely help the products compete more effectively with more popular competitors like Apple's iPod. Until now, the Sony devices were designed to only play files encoded with Sony's proprietary Atrac music file format.
The shift from reliance on its proprietary format will begin with flash memory-based players, the electronics giant said, but plans are still being finalized on how and when products will add MP3 support. CNET News.com affiliate ZDNet France first reported of the change in Sony's strategy for the European market. U.S. representatives said the company is making similar plans here.

While that process may seem relatively simple for savvy computer users, Robins knows there are many more consumers who don't have the time to convert an entire collection, especially if ripping one CD takes five to 10 minutes. By Benny Evangelista, San Francisco Chronicle

Fourteen Percent of Internet Users No Longer Donload Music Files
http://ww w.pewinternet.org/reports/toc.asp?Report=122

The recording industry campaign against those who download and swap music online has made an impact on several major fronts, but the number of Americans downloading music and sharing files online has increased, according to the most recent survey of the Pew Internet & American Life Project. The Project’s national phone survey of 1,371 adult Internet users conducted between February 3 and March 1, 2004 shows that 14% of online Americans say that at one time in their online lives they downloaded music files, but now they no longer do any downloading. That represents more than 17 million people. However, the number of people who say they download music files increased from an estimated 18 million to 23 million since the Project’s November-December 2003 survey. This increase is likely due to the combined effects of many people adopting new, paid download services and, in some cases, switching to lower-profile peer-to-peer file sharing applications.

Flash MP3 Players Reviewed 02/10/2004 02:43 AM
Flash MP3 players may not be cool enough for Steve Jobs, but for those of us on a budget they are a great way to carry a tune or two.

If you're in the market for a smaller MP3 player, and don't want to drop more than $150 take a look at my reviews of Rio's Fuse and the irock 860.

Digital Photography Hacks Reviewed 08/06/2004 07:45 AM

gdigital_photography_hacks.gif imageWe don't normally talk about book reviews, but since Mark Goldstein's Photography Blog is one of our favorites (and we must admit a certain weakness for O'Reilly books) I think we'll make an exception as he reviews "Digital Photography Hacks" by Derrick Story. The short end? He likes it a lot, which is fairly high praise from someone who is already a photography, calling it "well-rounded and not at all shallow" and "most suitable for the Intermediate category," as well as "explicit," "concentrate," and "and."

Although I haven't read Story's book, one thing that caught my eye is that out of 100 different tips, only 13 are about Photoshop. I love me some Photoshop, but I'm more interested in learning what to do so I don't need it.
