Speaking of Google, Evan
blogged from the SBC Park last tuesday and took this picture.
I think it's neat that WiFi is available at the park and geeks tend
to posse with
other geeks, but the picture made me shake my head. Four
laptops in a row, including
the one Evan probably had in front of him while he took the
picture, at a baseball
park?
Hmm. Maybe this was sort of a work thing. A
WiFi-enabled stadium is a
perfect place for flash P2P grid computing after all. Who
needs expensive office
spaces when your team can work at round-the-clock movie theathers
and holding meetings
at the lobby? When WiFi access at campsites become widely
available, maybe we'll
see startups working out of tents and RVs.

The curse of anonymity
The curse of anonymity
09/05/2004 12:52 AMAs much as I love the web and am incredibly thankful for the
opportunities it has provided for me, days like today make me loathe
its anonymity. The day started off with a nasty bout of comment spam,
followed at midday by dealing with someone posting FeedDemon serial
numbers (since disabled) to a warez site, then ended with a bizarre
series of threats from a disgruntled Dreamweaver user. Before I
continue, take a look at this Google Groups search for some background
information.
As you can see, someone has made several posts to various
Macromedia newsgroups claiming that TopStyle has hijacked Dreamweaver.
His complaint is that every time he tries to open a CSS file in
Dreamweaver, it opens in TopStyle instead. And since he installed the
trial version of TopStyle, it's asking him to register it. Now, the
reason TopStyle keeps being opened is actually due to a bug in
Dreamweaver. Every time you start Dreamweaver, it automatically
detects TopStyle and sets it as the default CSS editor - even if
you've removed it from the "File Types / Editors" list in
Dreamweaver's preferences. So matter what you do, if you have
TopStyle installed, Dreamweaver uses it as the external CSS
editor.
Here's the kicker: this same person has emailed me several times
and threatened to start a class action lawsuit against my company
unless I pay him $1,000.00 by September 9. Here's a
quote:
"I have an attorney on the staff of my company
and we are going to be moving aggressively against companies using
unscrupulous marketing practices such as yours. The time we lost today
cost us about $1,000. That is the amount that will make us go away.
Otherwise we are going to seek a class action lawsuit against you. We
will start by finding others who have been damaged by your practices.
This will be done with a Google Adwords ad that comes up each time
someone enters topstyle or bradsoft into Google. Send the check for
$1,000 to: [address removed]"
Now, obviously this guy
has a loose wire, and his threat is laughable - if he ever tried to
file suit, he would be in hot water for
extortion.
But being a one-man-show, it's incredibly hard for me to spend time
dealing with people like this - yet I have to, because their posts to
public newsgroups show up in Google searches for my software.
Does anyone else have to deal with this kind of garbage, and if so,
how do you handle it?

Mark Frauenfelder:
"D" sez: This profile of Cheney is frightening. The only hope it
offers is that every President to have Cheney involved in its
adminitration has failed to be re-elected.
I knew the guy was bad, but if all the allegations in this article
are true, he's singlehandedly hamstrung all the offices of the
military and intelligence in the US:
Over at Defense, competent intelligence professionals were
purged in order to ease the way to war. Douglas Feith, brought in
under Rumsfeld to serve as undersecretary of defense for policy,
applied an ideological test to his staff: He didn't want competence;
he wanted fervor. Col. Pat Lang, a Middle East expert who served under
five presidents, Republican and Democratic, in key posts in military
intelligence, recalls being considered for a job at the Pentagon.
During the job interview, Feith scanned Lang's impressive resume. "I
see you speak Arabic," Feith said. When Lang nodded, Feith said, "Too
bad," and dismissed him.

10/30/2003 11:57 PMMarshall Brain is stirring up more controversy. Roland Piquepaille
notes in his
blog that while Brain's last article "Robotic Nation"
warned that robots could displace the human workforce causing massive
unemployment, now he has done a 180 and is promoting the idea as a
Utopian ideal he calls "Robotic
Freedom". Imagine a world in which robots do all the work and humans
are all on permanent vacation (government welfare). Everyone will
become
a creative artist and be happy, right? Marshall is a little late
in stumbling onto these ideas. Science Fiction readers have been
pondering this sort of thing
for half a century. And if anyone, including Brain, actually believes
"Robotic Freedom" is a good idea, they should read Jack Williamson's
1947 story,

Explanation of "winner's curse" in
upcoming Google IPO auction
Explanation of "winner's curse" in
upcoming Google IPO auction
05/03/2004 11:35 PMAn economics professor explains how the psychology behind bidding on
things for investment reasons tends to limit the amount of the high
bid.
Google intends to sell shares of itself through an auction
in which Google stock is sold to those willing to pay the most per
share. This means, for example, that if only 20% of the bidders
end up with Google stock, these 20% will consist of people who bid the
most for Google. Now, if you end up being one of these "lucky"
20% should you worry that the winner's curse has stricken you since
you apparently valued the stock at an amount greater than what most
investors believed Google to be worth?
Rational investors will take the winner's curse into account
when making a bid. For example, assume that before the auction
you think a share of Google is worth $100. But you figure that
if you end up being a winner in the auction it means that most
investors think Google is worth less than $100. So, the act of
winning will cause you to think Google is worth only $80 a
share. You should, therefore, bid no higher than $80, an amount
diminished by the winner's curse.

AT&T Puts EDGE Everywhere
AT&T Puts EDGE Everywhere
11/18/2003 04:22 PMAT&T Wireless said at Comdex today that EDGE is in 6,500 cities:
EDGE is 2.5G service that extends GPRS's 10 to 50 Kpbs up to the 100
Kbps or faster range. EDGE has been gradually appearing, and Cingular
had promised a full deployment probably by mid-2004. AT&T's
announcement seems like a slight surprise. AT&T is offering
unlimited EDGE (and by extension, GPRS in any areas that don't have
EDGE support) for $80/month. A card costs $150 after rebate for a
two-year service commitment. AT&T said that they'd also offer and
support the Nokia 6200 EDGE phone which can be used with a laptop or
as a cell phone. EDGE is available outside the U.S. on AT&T's
network in Puerto Rico and Bermuda, as well as Vancouver, British
Columbia. The plan is to expand throughout Canada in 2004. (As a
Cingular subscriber, this is precisely the kind of thing that could
get me to switch -- especially if that PC Card from Sony Ericsson has
Mac OS X drivers.)...
