Amazon Debuts A9 Search Engine

Amazon Debuts A9 Search Engine 09/15/2004 07:33 AM
Amazon's independent A9 unit is ready to officially unveil its customized search engine, which debuted in preview form last April. A9.com combines Web and image searches from Google, movie and book searches from Amazon and reference materials from GuruNet into an interface that can be custom tailored for each user. A9 also recommends Web sites in a TiVo-like fashion and includes a Diary for taking notes on a Web page. It is not yet clear if A9 will become a part of Amazon.com.

Amazon enters search fray

Amazon enters search fray 04/21/2004 12:45 AM

Amazon.com entered the search wars with the launch of its A9 service . A9 searches Amazon's listings, including book texts , and the Web via Google , at the same time. Users can register to have A9 record their searches. A generic A9 exists, without that feature. A9's downloadable toolbar also lets users annotate their searches in a text window.

A weblog , rather than a mainstream media source, was apparently chosen to break the news .

Amazon enters the search wars with A9

Amazon enters the search wars with A9 09/18/2004 11:37 AM

Following up on its April beta release , Amazon.com this week launched A9 , and entered the growing search engine contest. A9 runs searches across several applications simulataneously, including Google , Google's image search , the Internet Movie Database for films, GuruNet for reference , and Amazon.com, including its search inside the book feature . A9 also allows some user control of search information, including displaying results in multiple columns, a diary tool and a browser-based toolbar.

This adds another player to the increasingly populated search competitions. Critical response to A9 has so far been mixed , with some applause for its Amazon-ish "Discover new sites" feature, and concern about its complexity for average users. The business model is unclear , although Amazon is starting to discount A9 users. Also uncertain is the future of A9's relationship with Google.

Amazon Book Search Boosting Sales So Far

Amazon Book Search Boosting Sales So Far 10/31/2003 01:39 AM
Amazon today was excited to announce that in the first week of their full-text book searching service, books in the service sold 9% better than those not in the search. While I do think the service is great, and I'm sure it will boost sales, I'm not sure these numbers mean anything. There was definitely a big boost in usage of this service due to the ton of publicity it received. So, let's see how it's doing a few months down the road, and then it might be worth talking about. In the meantime, various authors are sti ll complaining about the service. They quote an author of a travel book who is worried that readers only want a couple of sections and would print those out and never buy the book. I guess he hasn't been ot the library lately. If people just need a couple pages out of his book, they're not going to buy the book anyway.
