5000fx.jpgIs the future of digital DJing iPods or vinyl?

Yes, says Numark. Aside from apparently working on a concept for a DJ mixer that would integrate iPods, allowing you to scratch right from your portable player (as reported earlier today), Numark continues to beef up its options for hard-core vinyl DJs. Witness the analog-digital hybrid Numark 5000FX (also via scratchworx): this monster can connect three turntables, 6-9 line inputs from devices like laptops, 2 microphones, and output to headphones and multiple line outs. (Beck might have to update the lyrics of the song.) With the $895 5000FX, you can mix, flip, reverse, chop, sample, scratch, beat-match, [rub it down, onoes! -ed.] and add rhythmic echo and other effects. That's not to say that iPod DJing has to be any less musical—real DJ features for the iPod could challenge DJs to get their chops up.

management chips
09/27/2004 03:22 AM

Ok I must confess I am not fully up to speed on this topic but the more I read the more I am getting the picture of things to come. We all know that by July 15th 2005 all DVR must have a DRM technology embedded to block recording of HDTV shows and non HDTV programming that has a broadcaster inserted flag in the video stream.

The referenced Slashdot article does not go into detail but the early adopters hoping to get a DVR capable of recording HDTV before the chips are installed are worried.

I will be looking into this a bit and would appreciate comment from those of you that have a HDTV and an DVR. [Slashdot]

Win XP SP2 "turns Firewire 800 into
Firewire 100"
08/12/2004 02:38 PM
The moderator of the RME forum has warned that installing Windows XP SP2 can lead to the bus speed being limited to 100Mbit/s. Matthias Carstens posted the message on the RME forum yesterday, but says it's not a problem particular to RME products. He said: "It affects any Firewire 800 device. If you have a FW800 PCI card and an FW 800 hard disk, go see the bits come one by one through the Firewire cable".

RME, he said, was aware of the problem for some time, but "didn't really imagine that Microsoft would have the guts to try to bury an existing standard. We just downloaded the final public version and it is simply unbelievable". He said that some companies are trying to sell Firewire 800 drivers so everything will be hunky-dory. But, he said, these drivers probably won't work correctly with a Fireface 800.

Firewire or USB NAS

Firewire or USB NAS 08/05/2004 03:10 AM

I just picked up an exter nal Seagate 160GB hard drive with the intention of using it as a primary backup device for my home office. I can easily plug it into any machine via USB or Firewire and back the computer up.

While I was setting up the backup scheduling for my laptop, however, I realized that I can’t really create a schedule. My laptop is very mobile—it moves from room to room and place to place with me. I can’t expect to have the drive’s USB connection plugged into my laptop at any given time. If I schedule the backup to run at 1am, I would need to make sure I have the laptop on my desk and connected in order for the backup to succeed.

What would be great is a small IP addressable gadget that I could plug this drive into so that it could become a simple Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. That way my laptop could be backed up over my wireless net from anywhere in the house.

Something like this might exist already but I didn’t turn anything up in a few moments of research.

IP over Firewire 12/04/2002 06:20 PM

Apple has released IP over Firewire. I think this is kind of cool, and I have always wished for it. Although, I'm sure people are going to get carried away and start thinking that they should wire their house with Firewir e instead of Cat5. Silly Mac/ers.
