According to the Business Wire press release— Social Networking Graduates to Wireless at SmallPlanet.net:

“This is true location-based, mobile social networking,” says SmallPlanet’s Ken Torimaru, who led the development of CrowdSurfer. “We are giving users the option to know when friends are nearby and to meet new people with whom they share some common, previously invisible connection, and we’re doing it in the real world; in real time, in real place.”

Like most advances in consumer information technology, such as the Internet itself, the location-based mobile services that will figure prominently in the coming “mBoom&# 147; come with risks as well as rewards, such as potential misuse and loss of privacy. “We are very focused on privacy issues with this application,” says Heaney. “We are rolling it out slowly and methodically, and with the maximum  amount of filters and controls that allow users to determine exactly who, if anyone, gets to ‘see’ or ‘find’ them at any given time.”

David Pescovitz: A group of surfers at Sydney, Australia's Bronte Beach were attacked by a seven-foot shark on Saturday. One of the surfers held up his board as a barracade to protect himself and his friends. From the Associated Press:

The shark took two bites of the fiberglass board before ceasing the attack, (life guard Aaron) Graham told The Associated Press by telephone. "There were two big puncture mark bites on the board, but it didn't actually bite a hunk out of it so he was able to ride it in."

The beach was immediately closed, but thirty-minutes later Graham apparently spotted the surfer hitting the waves again on a new board. Link

Rolling papers and the pictures that are on the box. My favorites: the rock'n'rollers, of course. But then again, the graphics ones are cool, as are the 'head' oriented ones. There are even NSFW papers. A similar site, Cigarette Rolling Papers - The Arcadia Bell Collection, has far better pictures, but it's harder to navigate.

This story seems bizarre, but apparently a bunch of courts are somehow u nprepared for the fact that people might actually use the WiFi networks they installed. Most of the article focuses on a reporter sending out realtime updates for a court case via the WiFi, leading to this absolutely classic quote from someone from the court: "In my life, I would have never thought you could do any of that. When we put the wireless network in about two years ago, we didn't think anybody would even use it." Yeah, they just installed it for the hell of it. How dare someone actually use it! The rest of the article goes on to discuss just how "dangerous" this situation is, and how courts don't understand what a risk these networks are. It also refers to "WiFi" as the "informal" name for wireless networks -- when it's actually very much the formal, certified name for them.
