Rumor: iPAQ H6315 Details 04/20/2004 07:17 AM

There is no coffee here, so rumor will have to suffice. Someone on the iPAQabilities boards is claiming to have toyed with one of the new iPAQ H6315s, having been told by an HP employee that the PDA should be released in May as a T-Mobile exclusive, August for AT&T...

h6315_romup.jpgThe HP iPaq h6315 Windows Mobile smartphone has been troubled since it first launched on T-Mobile, with email and connectivity issues that caused the carrier to effectively pull the device off its shelves. Now they're releasing a new ROM update that purports to fix most of the issues, so if you've already plunked down the cash for a h6315 you feel like you're stuck with, you'd be well served to give it download before you go crying to T-Mobile for a replacement (and if it doesn't, you should).

h6315_pulled.jpgIt looks like the problems with the HP iPaq h6315 over at T-Mobile are coming to a head, with the device pulled from both business and consumer sales sites, and an official, but unpublicized (until now) exchange program for disatisfied customers. It looks like T-Mobile will be offering refurbished Treo 600s and BlackBerries to those customers who meet their replacement qualifications. PhoneMag has the details, including the internal memo going out to the sales force with information about the replacement and warranty status of the h6315.

HP iPaq rx3000 Series Details Leaked 06/22/2004 12:14 PM

HP_iPAQ_rx3000_Front_S.jpg imageSqueezing blood out of the FCC turnip, Brighthand has eked out some information about of the upcoming iPaq rx3000 Series Pocket PCs. All will use the Samsung 2440 processor, QVGA screens, come with bundled Bluetooth 1.1 and WiFi (802.11b) networking, a 1.3-megapixel camera, with the main differences being processor speed, built in memory (from 56MB to 152MB user-accessible). Between Dell and HP, the Pocket PC world is just rocking the PDA space -- if PDAs are dying, it won't be because Pocket PC died quietly, unlike another PDA platform we won't mention.

logo-apple.jpgThinkSecret is reporting the supposed details of Apple's Power Mac, iMac, and eMac upgrades, presumed to be officially unveiled by the company at the upcoming NAB conference. There's nothing terribly mind-blowing, mostly because there is still no confirmation as to whether the top-end Power Mac G5s (with speeds up to 2.7GHz) will have a dual-core version of the 970 processor or not.

It also appears that rumors of a Blu-ray compatible SuperDrive were pie-in-the-sky, although the rumors say dual-layer DVD+R support is likely. Everything else sounds extremely reasonable, with modest performance bumps across the line.

Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) released a software update last week for its troubled iPaq h6315 handheld that promises to fix several issues that left users frustrated and caused retail partner T-Mobile USA to remove the device from its stores.

ipaq_6315_rumor.jpg imageSo it's not all roses for T-Mobile and HP's new iPaq h6315 Pocket PC phone. According to users on various forums who purchased the recently-released device, using the built-in GPRS connection to send email over 4k in size can cause a disconnection (and subsequent failure). Others are reporting issues connecting to other internet services over GPRS connection (and even Wi-Fi, although I think that's just a random issue). T-Mobile has acknowledged the issue (not publically, but to users reporting in the forums), and word has it there is a problem in the h6315 GPRS TCP/IP stack.

That should be fixable via software patch, which hopefully will hit the web soon.

om_h6315.jpg imageHP has officially pulled the tarps from its new iPAQ line of Pocket PC PDAs; the first reviews are just starting to trickle in. Mobile dervish Om Malik has had one of the most exciting new iPAQ models, the h6315, in his hands for about a week, and while it isn't the most favorable review I've ever read, it still looks pretty exciting for anyone more technically minded in search of a hyper-connected phone/PDA (we're talking GSM/GPRS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth in a single device).

We'll have a bit more on some of the other iPAQs released today as it comes in, at least if its anything new and interesting (most of the details seem to be the same as we reported pre-release), but for now here's some of the dirty details on the h6315.

New iPAQ Pocket PC

New iPAQ Pocket PC 07/27/2004 02:43 AM

I'll be honest I have a iPAQ one that I purchased last year. It was a big waste of money. My laptop is with me about 90% of the time. I play games on it on airplanes and try and figure out how to re-coup my money. Someone needs to come up with a book on how to be productive with a Pocket PC. I am sure their is one out there but I'd hate to waste more money. This is one of the reasons I am hesitant to buy a tablet. I'm afraid it would be a waste of money.

HP iPaq rx3715 Reviewed 08/31/2004 09:43 AM

Trusted Reviews takes a gander at the HP iPaq rx7815, a middle-range Pocket PC that HP is positioning as a "mobile media" device, and they seem to come away somewhat impressed, although to be honest it's sort of a hard review to read (in the 'figure out how they feel' sense not the 'bad English' sense). As for features, the rx3715 is strong enough, with integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (b) and even a decent camera (which is to say, better than VGA), but I think maybe the mezzo-mezzo tone of the review - and here is where I go out a limb, perhaps - is indicative not of HP's failings with this particular iPaq, but just a general malaise that is clouding our feelings about PDAs. We know what they do, they do it fairly well, but nobody is figuring out how to really make them any more useful.

To HP's credit, it does look like they are really trying to develop some new software that does new, interesting things. It looks like they're sort of succeeding.

HP iPaq RW6100 Photos 08/18/2004 08:38 AM

kap3_rw6100.jpg imageWhoa, this is a crazy one. There apparently had been rumors floating about of a new HP iPaq Smartphone, called the RW6100, and pictures have surfaced on a Korean website of what looks to be that very thing. What's interesting to me, though, is that it appears to be a slider, although with just a keypad underneath instead of a keyboard. It has a marked resemblance, in fact, to the Samsung SGH-D410 we reviewed last week, although it looks a lot bigger. Could be a very nice compromise between capability and size if it all pans out.

I've had the HP iPaq h6315 - their newest, actually-released Smartphone - in here for the last few days, and while I'll probably give it a proper review here soon, it's cemented my notion that I'm not that impressed with Windows Smartphones in the larger slate form factor anymore. If you don't mind things being way too huge for pockets, though, it's got a lot to offer.
