Red Hat unveils Linux desktop system 05/04/2004 11:04 AM
In a sign that demand is growing for alternatives to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows software, Red Hat Inc. will release a version of the Linux operating system and other programs tailored for desktop computers in corporations, universities and government agencies. Red Hat Desktop, announced Tuesday in London, will be targeted at organizations that are looking to upgrade their PCs but don't want or need all the features that ship with the latest version of Windows, said Matthew Szulik, Red Hat's chief executive.

Microsoft's desktop PC phone system

Microsoft's desktop PC phone system 12/02/2003 01:23 AM
By now we've all heard about Microsoft's moves into the cellphone business with their Smartphone operating system, but what hasn't gotten all that much attention is that they're also going to start selling Voice over IP telephone systems for businesses that are integrated into PCs:The Redmond, Washington, software giant is likely to muscle in on the territory of traditional vendors of private branch exchanges (PBXs) and even threaten the desktop handset, through PC-based "soft phones," according to some industry analysts. However, Microsoft and some major vendors in that market say they don't see themselves on a collision course. Microsoft may increasingly provide the platform software for telephony, but more specialized vendors will write the applications on top, they said.Since it's aimed at businesses this isn't something that the average person will ever use (except maybe at work), but it does give us a glimpse of how Voice over IP is...

First look: Sun Java Desktop System
Release 2
05/21/2004 11:36 AM
Imagine for a moment that Windows XP came with Office XP Professional and Visual Studio .NET preinstalled with it. Imagine it was significantly more secure and easier to use. Imagine that it cost only $50 for all of that software. Sun's new Java Desktop System Release 2 is like the bizarro world equivalent of that kind of Microsoft software package. It's in the same league, except it doesn't use Microsoft technologies. If only it actually worked.

danese_toolbar_rota_2_1_.jpgDanese Milano offers up their modular desktop container system, called the Toolbar. Based on "cells," each cell can contain modules—a penholder container, a CD holder, a document holder and the like. A horizontal bar lets you hang them up on the wall if you so choose and obsessive-compulsives can tweak the layout and order to their heart's content. MoCo Loco has more pics and a bit more info, but I'm relatively certain it's not for sale yet/ever, sadly—I'd love to pick one of these up at Office Max or a finer office furnishings store.

Many near-religious-level debates revolve around which GNU/Linux distribution is "best." However, we are blessed with two free platforms for desktop usage, the other being BSD. If you can deal with text-based installation and a few post-install commands at the command line, you can install and use FreeBSD 5.1. I got FreeBSD fully installed on a 450MHz AMD K6-III+ system with 512MB of SDRAM and a 36GB 10Krpm SCSI hard disk in just under an hour.

Speaking of world domination, a lot has happened on the H.264 front. It didn't make it into eyeBeam yet, but Polycom, Tandberg, and Sony video conferencing systems support H.264. Fraunhofer and MainConcept have released SDKs. Sorenson released an underwhelming pro encoder. Integration of H.264 into DVD "backup" app Nero Recode is imminent, but the open source x264 is making slow progress and Apple's QuickTime 6.6 is due in 2005. Then the really hard work begins: interoperability.
