cue: "bring 'em on"

cue: "bring 'em on" 02/15/2004 10:44 AM
Though I don't like the message, I was amazed "Meet the Press" would insist on controlling the 45 second clip the Bush/Cheney campaign tried to distribute after last week's show. Some say the campaign insists it did "nothing wrong." I agree. So why did they cave so quickly?

Who knows what 2005 will bring?

Who knows what 2005 will bring? 01/01/2005 05:20 AM

Here's my list of predictions:

1. We'll all give something up.

2. We'll all take something on.

3. If I make it to May 2, I'll turn 50. Praise Murphy!

4. Identity will remain a mess.

5. RSS will remain a success.

6. A major on-air radio talk show host from the left or right will realize that he or she can build a new market for his or her work by allowing people to download it in MP3 format linked into an RSS feed and listened to on an iPod.

7. A political leader, a candidate for some office, will emerge from the blogosphere. People will call this open source candidacy.

8. The term open source will come to mean nothing.

9. Cory Doctorow will sue Adam Curry for saying "Boing" when he's happy.

10. New tools for blogging will emerge allowing more complex structures of ideas to flow publicly through the Internet.

11. More people will call the Internet the Inkernet.

12. There will be a wifi signal at the top of the Empire State Building and in every truck stop in the US. Also in every Best Buy. McDonald's won't embrace the Internet.

New MSN Updates Bring More Ads

New MSN Updates Bring More Ads 04/07/2005 09:42 AM
While today marks the day that both MSN Spaces and Messenger version 7 are released to the public, it also marks the start of a risky strategy by Redmond to better monetize the two services. Users will find ads in places they wouldn't have seen them before, including in their personal Spaces and at the beginning of video chats.

Will You Bring Your Own PC To Work?

Will You Bring Your Own PC To Work? 05/07/2004 04:14 PM
People often have emotional attachments with their computers, even if that computer is supplied by their employers. Going one step beyond the concept of telecommuting and the so-called commodit ization of IT, some are wondering if a few years from now, people will be expected to bring their own computers to work, the same way they're expected to drive their own cars to work. And, if that's the case, what will it mean for the traditional role of the IT staffer who used to have to get you set up with your computer and help you troubleshoot when things weren't working properly? The article suggests it may mean fewer IT jobs, since they won't have to manager purchasing new machines and applications. However, it could mean a shift of those jobs towards the new problem: making all of those different PC configurations work together properly. Of course, that seems like an opportunity as well. If things really do progress in this manner, there will be a greater need for automation tools that can help configure a machine to work within a specific corporate network environment.

You can buy a car that has a GPS system, DVD player, and other digital functions already built-in. Or you can do what one enterprising Czech car owner did: You can put a Power Mac G4 in your vehicle and let it provide the GPS navigation, movies, music, weather reports, and more. It's all detailed in an article on MujMAC, a Czech Mac news Web site.

Bring the distribution channel to us

Bring the distribution channel to us 03/22/2005 04:45 PM

jeremy.jpgSo Jeremy Allaire talked about Brightcove today at PC Forum. Hidden between the hyperbole, rehashed models and ever hopeful attitude were nuggets of brilliance that I wanted to highlight to you folks. And sorry for the shitty photo - J. I'm clearly NOT a photographer.

Up until now - all video on demand interfaces have been giant shopping catalogs. Download sites today are also catalogs - as they enable customers to 'walk the virtual aisles, browsing for music or video - just as one browses for web pages or up and down search results lists.

But Brightcove has turned the notion of distribution channel back onto itself. Any Brightcove publisher, after using the Brightcove tools to encode and upload their work onto Brightcove's servers, can then take special javascript code and embed the entire 'DRM-like playback/chooser interface' directly into their own web page.

This not only gives the publisher a convienient way of promoting one's products by 'baking it into' one's own site, but it also gives Brightcove a great viral way of spreading their brand and services!

It's brilliant!

So congrats to Jeremy Allaire and co on that one. Maybe next time - we'll find out MORE about what you're doing.

To my eyes - I saw the ON2 codec - a beautiful, hi-res codec and pseudo-sexy Flex interface (the Laszlo stuff is better - needless to say.)

And I'd also like to shout out to Brightcove's investors. This is gonna be on drawn out battle of attribition. If it didn't work for Atom/Shockwave - they sure as hell better figure out why it's gonna work this time around.

But I actually do agree that this is teh right model and the 'last man standing' - is gonna win - big!

Bring it on, spam wankers! 05/15/2004 12:42 PM

First impressions of the new MT are generally really positive. I'm still having the same problems with incredibly slow performance that I had before, which I'm now assuming are to be laid at the door of my $140 a month host - pair.com. While I can now manage to do a full-site rebuild without my server throttling the process, if I pre-moderate or delete more than two or three comments in one go the whole thing shudders to a grotesque halt. For this reason (and because I've had some twat try and pump another forty incest-related bits of spam through the site), I'm putting the ultra-draconian comment management features into effect from this point on. I'm afraid if you want to make yourself heard on this site from now on you'll have to register with Typekey. I'm terribly sorry, guys, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let my site prop up the porn empire of some grotesque little money-grubbing freak who thinks that pissing around with the personal sites of well-meaning people in order to make 0.01 cents a pop is a legitimate thing to do. Wankers.

Wow. Dude. 2005. That's fucked up right here. Two thousand and five years into the Common Era. Which is like only a hundred generations or something. One hundred tiny links in the enormous chain that includes my mum, my gran, some weird hairy ape-like ancestors and a few large numbers of protozoa (among others). At the moment of course it's 2005 in Europe and it's 2004 in America, which means that for the next few hours we Europeans get to enjoy our flying cars and jetpacks and stuff before the Americans collapse the wave-function and leave us with Desperate Housewives and Pot Noodle. It's 3.15am. It's 3.15am and it's the first day of a brand new year. I'm bored. Are we there yet?
