Bill targets firms that 'induce'
copyright violations
07/06/2004 10:14 AMNew legislation recently introduced by a group of powerful U.S.
senators would allow artists and entertainment companies to sue
creators of products, such as peer-to-peer (P-to-P) software, that
"induce" copyright violations. Senate Judiciary Committee chairman
Orrin Hatch, clearly targeting P-to-P vendors, claimed his bill
focuses on companies that profit by encouraging children and teenagers
to infringe copyrights. "It is illegal and immoral to induce or
encourage children to commit crimes," Hatch, a Utah Republican, said
in a statement. "Tragically, some corporations now seem to think that
they can legally profit by inducing children to steal. Some think they
can legally lure children into breaking the law with false promises of
'free music.'"

08/02/2004 04:53 AMThe Irish Recording Music Association, whose members pay no taxes on
their earnings, is calling for a European copyright term extension to
70 years to create "a level playing field with the USA" (the US's 70
year term is the result of an effort to "create a level playing field
with Europe" -- notice a trend here?). This despite the wealth of folk
music that is embodied in Irish culture and performance, folk music
that enrihces the public and artists without any copyright.

Canadian Copyright Board allows
downloads, copyright levies
12/14/2003 12:27 PM
The
Copyright Board of Canada
issued a ruling on
" private
copying ", largely via peer-to-peer computing, with several
components. First, downloading is acceptable, but uploading is not
(presumably to target hyperpirates). Second, new mechanisms for
levies were described, freezing current ones, allowing new
charges.
the Copyright Board said uploading or distributing
copyrighted works online appeared to be prohibited under current
Canadian law.
However, the country's copyright law does allow making a copy for
personal use and does not address the source of that copy or whether
the original has to be an authorized or noninfringing version, the
board said.
