Harnessing Evil for the power of...
well, less evil
06/05/2005 11:55 PM There are days I think the $WORK_PROJECT is an exercise in extended
programming irony. The parrot code my compiler generates for
$WORK_LANGUAGE makes heavy use of continuations. Really heavy use of
continuations, to the point where reports are taking (and discarding)
three continuations per record plus another two or three per page of
the output. For a language which doesn't have functions, blocks, or
lexical variables, and whose idea of sophisticated control flow is
goto or gosub to bare labels. Go figure....

Invaluable Eudora plugins and tools
Invaluable Eudora plugins and tools
08/13/2004 01:36 AMIf you are a Eudora user, you want to check out Brana Bujenovic's
site. It has the best collection of Eudora for Windows tools that I
have found. There are several useful plugins for Eudora: a plugin to
strip quotes, one to format messages, and one to search and replace
text in messages. There is an extremely useful Eudora companion
application, Mailbox tools for Eudora that allows you to flag and
delete duplicate email messages. This has become a frequent problem
with Eudora 6.x, which has a tendency to die in the middle of
downloading mail, then re-download all the messages it had downloaded
before it died. The tool also allows you to generate html pages from
your email folders, and has several other functions to manipulate your
email folders. Last but not least, it has a decent search engine for
Eudora mailbox files, Red Rooster, that is light-years faster than
Eudora's own search function, and has lot more features. Highly
recommended....

Eudora 6.1.1 update fixes bugs
05/20/2004 02:39 AMQualcomm Inc. announced the immediate availability of
Eudora 6.1.1 on Wednesday. The new
version of the company's e-mail client features several bug fixes,
including problems with contextual filing to IMAP mailboxes with
children and the handling of unusual local folders, among other
issues. Eudora 6.1.1, which requires Mac OS X v10.0 or higher, is
US$49.95 for new users or those who purchased a registration code more
than 24 months ago, if you want to use it in Paid mode. Upgrades from
version 6.0 or 6.1 are free if purchased within the last 12 months or
$39.95 if purchased before then. Paid mode also includes 12 months of
free upgrades and technical support. The free version of Eudora 6.1
comes in two flavors: sponsored and light modes. The former places an
ad window and up to three sponsored toolbar links in the application;
the latter removes the ads but drops features.

Reading over the release notes for recent Eudora betas I noticed a
lot of negative comments about OS X. Some may merely be factual -- I
don't have the expertise to say. But there's an undercurrent of
bitterness that is undeniable: "...[A]pple's broken OSX network
reachability call ... OSX control manager bug ... broken Jaguar
Unicode converter ... [A]pple no longer believes in
colored [menu] text ..." and the most bitter, "OS SUX doesn't allow
dragging by window edges..."
I've always appreciated the candor in Qualcomm's update notes. Unlike
Apple, they don't say "improved functionality of feature X" when they
really mean "fixed stupid bug in feature X." But I'm wondering if
there is some larger significance to these comments. Does Qualcomm
have insufficient luv for OS X to keep Eudora competitive long-term?
How common are these sentiments among old-school Mac developers? Would
it all be better in Cocoa? Any developers with comments, I'm all
ears. Discuss
