What happens when you are promised BMW quality and are delivered a product that (from a quality perspective) has more in common with Eastern Europe's most utilitarian stamped steel people movers? An eroded fan base. By Perry Longinotti, The Inqurier (via MyAppleMenu)

Deleted Scenes on DVDs: Why such poor
quality?
08/10/2004 11:31 PM
This has bothered me for a while now. It seems that on most movie DVDs, the deleted scenes are of very poor video quality. It's as if someone went back to the cutting room, pieced together the film, scratched it a lot, and then projected it on a big screen so they could record it with a cheap-ass handheld video camera for later use on the DVD. Why is that? Anyone know?...

A few words while I switch the designs

Wow. Ouch. So there we go. I've redesigned the site and I'm struggling to get it all up and working properly as soon as I possibly can, but there are scratchy bits and clunky bits and I swear to got that I'm getting to those bits in a minute. This redesign has been a long time coming - and like so many of my personal bits of work, was actually accomplished only because I suddenly developed enough momentum on a Sunday afternoon to get it to a nearly thought-through stage before something else got in the way. So it has all of the features of things that come together in that way - I think it's pretty inspired (for something I'd do), while simultaneously it's full of rough bits that haven't been polished out of existence yet.

I've been trying to think around my aesthetic and my reasons for going in this direction, but to be honest it's a whole mix of things coming together at one point in time. There's a bit of my general frustration with people doing things that seem to me to be working in opposition to the media, there's a dash of my desire to keep refining an artificial/manufactured aesthetic for plasticbag.org and there's a large stinking block of trying to strip away all the guff that has accumulated around my site over the last few years.

Weirdly, I think I'm also secretly hoping that by going so stark that people find the site intimidating and unfriendly. I've written before about how hard I find it to write when everyone's watching. That feeling got a little worse than normal after the whole wonderful Bloggies win. Maybe subconsciously this is an attempt to try and keep a very particular crowd around here while alienating everyone else. Maybe it's not so subconscious. Dunno. I guess we'll see how people respond to it over the next few days / weeks / years.

Anyway, in the meantime, I'll endeavour to get as much as possible (if not everything) fixed that appears currently to be broken in the next couple of hours, and maybe tomorrow I'll try and give you guys a tour through some of my thinking. First redesign in a very very long time... Quite exciting...

Evolved antenna designs

Evolved antenna designs 06/28/2004 11:35 AM
This antenna (and may others on the linked page) was evolved by NASA using a genetic algorithm. While highly effective, its design is counter-intuitive.
First, there is the potential of needing less power. Antenna ST5-3-10 achieves high gain (2-4dB) across a wider range of elevation angles. This allows a broader range of angles over which maximum data throughput can be achieved. Also, less power from the solar array and batteries may be required.

Second, the evolved antenna does not require a matching network nor a phasing circuit, removing two steps in design and fabrication of the antenna. A trivial transmission line may be used for the match on the flight antenna, but simulation results suggest that one is not required.

Third, the evolved antenna has more uniform coverage in that it has a uniform pattern with small ripples in the elevations of greatest interest (between 40 and 80 degrees). This allows for reliable performance as elevation angle relative to the ground changes.

Lexmark DMCA Battle Far From Over

Lexmark DMCA Battle Far From Over 11/03/2003 04:24 AM
Last week, soon after the Copyright Office made their four tiny exemptions to the DMCA, a story started spreading widely saying that the Copyright Office had said it was okay for companies to create chips that circumvent copy protection for use in printer cartridges. This artic le was the result of a press release from Static Controls, a company engaged in a legal battle with Lexmark over offering such technology. The press release was a bit misleading, and many people misinterpreted the announcement, as if the Copyright Office was a judicial body ruling on the Lexmark case. However, the real details are a bit more complex. First of all, the Copyright Office actually ruled against Static Control's requested exemption - but did say that reverse engineering is already allowed, and therefore doesn't need a special exemption. Static Controls declared that as a victory, and many people incorrectly interpreted this as some sort of judicial victory for Static Controls over Lexmark. However, the Copyright Office is not a judge and wasn't deciding any case. In fact, the court in the actual case ruled against Static Control back in February and granted an injunction against the company preventing them from selling its chips. Meanwhile, Lexmark is still claiming victory themselves - saying that the exemption only applies to reverse engineering and they contend Static Control did more than reverse engineer the chip. They believe Static Control stole the chip design outright. Either way, the case is going back to court and the Copyright Office's rulings should have little impact.
