Portland Network Receives Grant for
Multiple Radio Unit Project
04/19/2004 07:01 PM

Northwest Academic Computing Consortium (NWACC) provides grant to pilot project to build mesh/backhaul/longhaul box: The project is backed by the Portland Research and Education Network (PREN) which is working with JoeJava's Nigel Ballard to develop the MRU. This grant brings their total research money to $30,000, which is enough to build out and test a significant network. There are many facets to the idea, which combines three radios: a WiMax one for long-haul (currently being provided in a similar-but-pre-WiMax state), one for mesh backhaul among devices using 802.11a, and one that supports 802.11b/g for local client access. Nigel's goal is a self-contained environmentally protected NEMA4 case...fed by internal deep-cycle batteries, a photovoltaic solar panel, with the main feed being AC power. Ideally, this could become the way in which the less-developed world unwires itself for data, voice, and media....

A-Infos Radio Project
http://www.radio4all.net/

The A-Infos Radio Project was formed in 1996 by grassroots broadcasters, free radio journalists and cyber-activists to provide themselves with the means to share their radio programs via the Internet. To their knowledge, the A-Infos Radio Project was the first grassroots media project of it's kind on the internet. Their goal is to support and expand the movement for democratic communications worldwide. They exist to be an alternative to the corporate and government media which do not serve struggles for liberty, justice and peace, nor enable the free expression of creativity. The archived material is available to anyone who wants it free of charge. They welcome submissions from all stations and independent producers in the service of these goals. All material is donated by its producers who are solely responsible for its content.

Last April, many GNU/Linux users, organized by the Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure (FFII), met in Brussels to demonstrate before the European Parliament (EP) against the introduction of software patents in the European Union. During the event, further protests were coordinated for the following month in many European cities. Eventually, the guys in Brussels found themselves asking, why don't we do this systematically? More precisely, why don't we create EuroLugs, a permanent network of all European LUGS and FLOSS associations, so we can act faster, all together and more effectively?

Tropos Found Weighs in on Dirty Mesh
Secrets
07/09/2004 08:12 PM
The founder and chief architect of mesh networking firm Tropos adds his two cents to the "ugly truths" about mesh networking thread: Narasimha Chari has added his comments that clarify many of the problems with mesh networking that Francis daCosta raised at Daily Wireless several days ago. I linked to daCosta's original post and posted and linked to two replies on the topic already in this archived item. Chari says that daCosta has his primary calculation wrong: instead of a bandwidth reduction in a single-radio mesh system where n is the number of hops of (1/2)^n, it's 1/n. This calculation results in an enormously higher throughput than daCosta (click slide from Nitin Vaidya that Chari references at upper right for the dropoff by hops in throughput). Chari makes a number of additional useful points on this topic that are worth considering. Tropos has deployed through its integrator and resellers the largest number of mesh points in commercial use in the U.S., and potentially worldwide, that I'm aware of. If they don't know what they're talking about, then a lot of networks are operating by hypnosis instead of science....

Mount Washington has wireless Webcam at

03/15/2003 09:44 AM

Mount Washington has wireless Webcam at the top of New England: Some insane folks at the Zakon Group in New Hampshire braved exceptional snow and temperature conditions to launch a Webcam at NH's Wildcat Mountain Ski Area (4,000 feet) pointing at the legendary Tuckerman and Huntingon Ravines. (My father-in-law learned to ski on Tuckerman Ravine using Stem Christies to turn from a full stop. Yes, it's steep.) The Webcam is solar powered and relays its signal wirelessly to the Mount Washington Observatory (6,300 feet). The Observatory has a frame-relay line.

Portland Airport Gets Free Wi-Fi 07/28/2004 09:53 PM

They're committed to covering the cost of operation for the first year, and then re-evaluating whether fees would be added. Strix Ethernet Unfriendly Building

04/27/2004 03:52 PM
I know it's PR, but it's good PR: science museum gets free network because Ethernet won't work: Strix has a brilliant little contest running to promote the use of its wireless backhaul and access point system in buildings that are impossible to affordably pull wire through. I've heard that museums are a great category in general, because they're either built so thickly to ensure temperature control or they're converted from another purpose now defunct (textile mill, hardened office building, etc.). In February, a prison in San Antonio won the contest. The latest winner is The Science Place in Dallas....

Pronto, Tropos Team Up

Pronto, Tropos Team Up 08/02/2004 12:12 PM
"Dating" in two cities turns into serious relationship between Tropos and Pronto: It's a natural partnership, and one we expect to see more of as metropolitan area networks or larger hot zones develop. Pronto handles the back-end and the front-end: user experience, account management, authentication, and other details of sessions. Tropos builds the infrastructure, maintaining the hardware. Neither company should specialize in each other's fields. This kind of strategic relationship could, of course, lead to firms that have separate managed services divisions through mergers and acquisitions so that they can offer equally good infastructure and AAA support. Many of the hotspot operators provide the back-end and the build-out, like Wayport, but the scale they're supporting is building-wide, not city-wide (yet)....

Tropos's mesh equipment deployed in New Orleans to watch the streets: Ruggedized mesh networking devices will deliver video surveillance of New Orleans streets at lower cost. Police officers will potentially be able to view surveillance while en route. In England, which lacks a per se Bill of Rights with blanket protections, CCT (closed circuit television) is common in most cities. It's a newer development in the U.S. On the other hand, we're being watched all the time. On the other hand, we're being watched all the time....

In Vancouver

In Vancouver 08/10/2004 12:44 PM

Nothing like launching a new standards effort the same day you leave town. Lots of confusion over "why the Open-media.org Wiki is closed".

So just to be clear.

There is no Wiki - there is nothing there - you;r enot missing anything. The original call for participation was to get help from folks so we COULD have something on teh Wiki and somethign to show.

Once that's there - THEN it'll be open - and we'll have a web site - too. So give us a few days - maybe a week.

Meanwhile I get to meet Roland Tanglao and Boris Mann (of Streamline) tonight - along with Stewart Butterfield, Caterina Fake and Jon Husband for dinner at some whacky Japanese place (Guu with Handsome.)

I think they think I'm some sort of Japan-o-phile. It's true - I used to be - back between 86'-95' - I did over 60 trips there.

Show - des neh! Wari Wari Wah.

Anyway - Vancouver is a gorgeous city, the weather is perfect and I'm nerding out on all sorts of new tools, opportunities and funding.

Shanghaied in Portland

Shanghaied in Portland 06/30/2004 10:55 AM
My post about CIncinnati's abandoned subway reminded BB reader Colin Sheridan of Portland's Shanghai tunnels. During the 19th century, this was the real underbelly of the city. Sailors would get drunk, drugged, and dragged through the underground tunnels to the port where they'd be sold to a ship captain as slave labor. By the time the poor saps awoke, they were already at sea. These days, tours are available and, of course, there's even a Shanghai Tunnel bar. Link

Portland Continues Wi-Fi Push

Portland Continues Wi-Fi Push 11/11/2003 03:11 PM
The Portland Business Journal has another long article about the city of Portland’s plans to attract Wi-Fi networks and Wi-Fi companies: The Portland Telecommunications Steering Committee, a group of city government and business leaders pushing Wi-Fi in Portland, hope that a Wi-Fi cloud will cover not just downtown but the outlying suburbs. An Intel exec is part of the group and Nigel Ballard hopes that Intel Capital might encourage some of the wireless startups it funds to relocate to Portland. Portland has been really ambitious in its encouragement of Wi-Fi and I hope it spells success for the city. In typical Portland fashion, the leaders hope to use Wi-Fi to bring more business to the city but only as far as that can benefit citizens--the leaders almost always talk about ensuring some degree of free access on the Wi-Fi networks....

The Portland Pattern Repository

The Portland Pattern Repository 12/25/2004 05:30 PM

Cunningham & Cunningham, Inc.: This is apparently the first wiki ever produced — the wiki seed from which all others grew, if you will. It's also known as the Portland Pattern Repository.

It's kind of the oracle of all things wiki. There are pages on wiki and Extreme Programming philosophy, like the theories of Wabi Sabi (something all developers would use more of), Once and Only Once, and the Open Closed Principle.

It's very long on theory and a bit shorter on practical programming techniques, but still very much worth browsing from time to time. Go there for a dose of The Big Picture every once in a while.
