MTV gets cold feet, or does it?

MTV gets cold feet, or does it? 05/27/2004 06:12 AM
This turns into one of those cases where researching a story gets weirder. The documentary Supe r Size Me centers on a documentary filmmaker's 30 day experience eating nothing but McDonalds. The film is doing amazingly well as a limited release documentary grossing more per screen than high-budget Troy. Here is the weird part, Reuters has picked up on a distributor press release claiming that MTV is refusing to air advertising for Super Size Me because the film is "disparaging to fast-food restaurants". The Reuters short seems to have quite a bit of legs. However a Hollywood Reporter article details MTVs side of the story placing the blame on the film's distributor. Is this really a case of a network getting cold feet? Or is it a case of distributor trying to pull the "too edgy for MTV" moneymaking ploy? And what is with the continually morphing Reuters clip that is just now being tossed onto doorsteps and stuffed into newsboxes across North America? (The film was previously discussed on metafilter back in January.

Mindy wonders if anybody would notice if she took her shoes off at work (in Finnish). In the spirit of scientific exploration, I took my shoes and socks off to check what would happen.

So far it's been 15 minutes, and at least one person went by without saying anything (though she did wonder why I did not want to go to lunch yet.) I will keep you updated.

(Oh yeah, and my coworkers reading this weblog: it does not count if you read it from here first. So nyah.)

30 minutes: I'm feeling a slight chill. I'm trying to wiggle my toes to keep them warm.

60 minutes: Close to an hour. My feet are definitely getting cold. I wonder if there's "email yoga"? (By the way - I have about four Gmail invitations left, so if you want to test drive it, drop me some email.)

100 minutes: I'll now attempt to go to the toilet. Wish me luck.'

102 minutes: back. Nothing.

Wired is running a short interview with Neil Young which I read because I’m fond of his music; and if you’ve never seen Neil perform live you ought to make the effort, there are ups and downs but the ups are way up. Anyhow, I think this is a must-read for anyone who cares about Media and Radio and Music and The Net and all those other capitalized words. Mr. Young obviously Gets It, big time. I’m now off to spend some time at his new multimedia project, Greendale.

Howard Rheingold on CivicSpace....

I was thrilled to meet a young man by the name of Zack Rosen at SXSW this year, and more thrilled when he told me that his reading of Smart Mobs was a key inspiration behind his effort to create the infrastructure for Deanspace. He's been working on a toolkit for community organizing of the kind that drove the Dean campaign. Based on Drupal, the civic organizing toolkit was designed to be easy to use and cost less than $50/month. It's called CivicSpace. Check it out. It should be available soon.

CivicSpace is being built with the needs of distributed organizations in mind. It will give you and the supporters within your community a solid framework for organizing and engaging those around you in action. But it also will allow you to plug your community into a network of other communities where you can share your ideas, knowledge, relationships, and organizational information. Here are some things it will enable you to do:

  • Create a customizable community driven website with Blogs, Photo Galleries, User Profiles, Friend / Buddy Tracking, Polls, and File Storage more…
  • Send targeted email more…

  • Import and aggregate remote content, share users, and sync calendars with any other CivicSpace site more…
  • Manage your groups membership and contacts more…

  • Organize events, ride sharing, and RSVP more…
  • < br />
  • Collaboratively create, edit, and publish documents more…

  • Easily create discussion forum / mailing lists more…
  • Allow you to create forms and surveys for data collection more…
  • VoterID/GOTV more…

Another made an alarm clock you have to wrestle with to prove that you are awake.
