ATI Technologies outsold all other vendors of graphics chips
during 2004, an analyst firm confirmed Friday. More and more IT
departments are issuing their clients notebooks instead of desktop
PCs, and students and professionals are choosing to take their work,
or entertainment, on the road. That's good news for vendors like ATI
or its rival, Nvidia Corp.

AMD Samples Athlon 64 4000+, FX-55
Chips, but on 130nm
09/10/2004 07:19 AMWhile Advanced Micro Devices is shipping its 90nm processors to
customers at present, the company’s higher-end chips targeted for
introduction later this year may still be made using mature 130nm
Silicon-on-Insulator technology. Pictures of AMD Athlon 64 4000+ and
AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 processors located at a Chinese web-server have
been posted in a forum thread of AMDZone web-site. Availability of
such pictures may mean that AMD is sampling its processors that are
expected to be formally introduced in Q4 2004 with some makers of
computer mainboards or computers, if the microprocessors’ photos are
not fake ones.
Besides product pictures, the forum member who remained anonymous has
also placed screenshots from CPU-Z software revealing technical
information about the AMD Athlon 64 4000+ and AMD Athlon 64 FX-55
central processing units. It appears that the model 4000+ will be
clocked at 2.40GHz, contain 1MB of L2 cache and sport dual-channel
memory controller, fully copying specs of the currently shipping AMD
Athlon 64 FX-53 processor for Socket 939 infrastructure. The FX-55
product will also have dual-channel memory controller, 1MB of L2
cache, but will function at 2.60GHz, bringing new performance heights
to Sunnyvale, California-based AMD.

Threebase is reporting that
Video Without Boundries is still planning on releasing the MediaREADY
4000, a set-top media hub and networked DVD player with a variety of
flash memory card slots, a built-in hard drive, and Ethernet (but no
wireless?) It certainly looks full-featured enough, with FireWire and
USB slots right up front (and hopefully on the back, as well), but
when it ships Real Soon Now for $450 we'll be able to see what sort of
boundryless video experience they actually intend on providing.
No mention of the VIA co-branding this time around, although
Threebase's Noah Kravitz does mention VWB's plans to "license their
technologies along the lines of a tiered, scaleable solution
marketable to consumers and telcom providers alike."

05/27/2004 01:53 PMWith the $1,795 Stylus Pro 4000, Epson focused considerable energy on
improving the print engine, including minor improvements to print
quality. This was a wise decision; the 2200 and the 7600 produced
stunning prints, and Epson sticks with the same UltraChrome
pigment-ink formula in the 4000. As a result, the overall quality of
both color and monochrome prints is excellent.

Too many Christmas lights?
12/10/2003 07:56 PM Is there such a thing as
too many Christmas lights? I love seeing
lavish
displays of lights at Christmas time. Some folks like a few
old-fashioned
Christmas lights and some like to deck the halls in a blaze of
glory
(this one boasts 700,000 lights). And
how
much does it cost to run a fabulous display?

Where Was FERC When the Lights Went Out?
Where Was FERC When the Lights Went Out?
08/06/2004 09:40 AMSF Chronicle: Death Star' trader admits manipulating California
market. The Enron Corp. energy trader who devised the notorious
"Death Star'' scheme to bill California for fictitious electricity
pleaded guilty in a San Francisco court to a federal fraud charge and
admitted plotting to manipulate the market during the state's energy
crisis.
Who else should be indicted? An e-mail
correspondent this morning points to one of the worst offenders in
this scandal: the
Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission, where inaction in the face of utter sleaze
is a way of life.
Instead of helping California and the other states that got screwed by
the bandits at Enron and other energy companies, FERC has consistently
stiffed the victims, offering a tidbit here and there but essentially
doing nothing serious.
FERC keeps insisting that it's on the case. We'll need some actual
evidence one of these days.
