Cory Doctorow: The National Insitute of Justice has published "Forensic Examination of Digital Evidence: A Guide for Law Enforcement" -- a 91-page PDF to help computer-illiterate cops not screw up evidence collection and help cyber-cops make use of materials.

* Place the forensic boot disk into the floppy or CD-ROM drive. Boot the computer and ensure the computer will boot from the forensic boot disk.

- Reconnect the storage devices and perform a third controlled boot to capture the drive configuration information from the CMOS/BIOS.
* Ensure there is a forensic boot disk in the floppy or CD-ROM drive to prevent the computer from accidentally booting from the storage devices.
* Drive configuration information includes logical block addressing (LBA); large disk; cylinders, heads, and sectors (CHS); or auto-detect.

Apprehension continues to rise here in Hawaii with our extended family in that a family member has not checked in from Thailand. I have spent the past 5-6 hours digging thru survivor/deceased list and have came up with nothing. The concern is even greater in that she is a very responsible young lady and would have have called home if she could have by now considering how concerned she knew her mother would be.

Like the thousands upon thousands of others in the same situation all we can do is say a quiet prayer and keep our fingers crossed.

Continuing my series on mobile platforms, I now think killer mobile apps need mobile devices designed like game consoles, meaning that it has one or two slots for application cartridges.  Each cartridge contains one or more applications.  Cellphones would come with a built-in cartridge containing the phone app as well as others.

Adding a cartridge adds new apps.  Applications have two modes: running and stopped.  The Next-App button (aka Appy button) activates (brings to front) each running apps in turn.  Some apps can activate itself when an event fires (phone call received).  To see the list of available apps, keep the Next-App button pressed for a second.

Eventually, app cartridges will be advance to become platform cartridges, taking over the full functionality of the mobile device to offer better application platform services than the one that came with the device (i.e. easy to use app download service that auto-configures apps for your device).  If you don't like the built-in calender, just stop it and run a third-party calendar instead.

In the fall of 2000, Jeffrey Zeldman famously said that relative font sizing was impossible ("pixels, baby... or nothing") because of an overwhelming variety of browser bugs, starting with Netscape 4 and ending in the most modern browsers. Since then, Netscape 4 still hasn't gotten any better, and it still hasn't gone away, but at least the design community has learned a thing or two about taming the browsers and making relative font sizing a reality.

This page uses absolute font sizes in Netscape 4, but relative font sizes in newer browsers that can handle it. There is no Javascript, no multiple stylesheets to maintain. In fact, this page in entirely self-contained; all CSS is defined in a single <style> element at the top of the page. -- Mark Pilgrim
