The Movie Business Strives To Be Like...

The Movie Business Strives To Be Like...
The IRS?!?
03/25/2005 06:57 AM
We've already questioned Dan Glickman's backwards looking plan as head of the MPAA to beg people not to tape movies, but Glickman continues to amaze with his complete inability to realize what's happening to the business he's supposed to be helping to shape going forward. His latest claim is that he wants to mak e the movie industry more like the IRS. Sheer brilliance. This is an industry that needs to attract and retain customers in the face of increasing competition from a variety of different sources, and the plan is to make the industry more like one of the most hated organizations in the country. Are we going to need to fill out complex forms next time we want to watch a movie too?

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

Reach More of the Right People Faster with Less Effort. Business is under pressure now more than ever to do more with less — bigger, better, cheaper, faster. But at what cost? At the cost of human relationships? It doesn't have to be. The internet offers powerful tools to help you find the right people, connect with them, build trust and rapport, and collaborate with them quickly and cost-effectively. This is a good guide with some fine resources. This has been added to my white paper Online Social Networking.

Sony's entertainment business is killing
its electronics business

Sony's entertainment business is killing
its electronics business
05/11/2004 01:58 AM
Derek Slater takes Sony to task over its new music-download service and iPod-like player.

Sony's acquisition of a couple of minor entertainment companies has had untold consequences. It's a poison pill that is killing Sony, one piece at a time.

Back from 1976-1984, Sony was the company that spent hundreds of millions on the defense of its VCR, bringing it all the way to the Supreme Court, arguing that the entertainment industry didn't have any right to its business-model; that if new technology could make the old business irrelevant, that was tough shit, and the movie companies needed to stop pewling and get with the program (they did, and made lots of money, besides).

But ever since Sony "aquired" Columbia, it's been acting like its electronics business was a minor business unit that couldn't afford to disrupt its precious entertainment arm (despite the fact that the entertainment arm's contributions to Sony's bottom line are minimal when compared to the gadget biz). When the first MP3 players appeared in the market, from little companies like Creative Labs, Sony brought out proprietary devices that played stupid formats like RealAudio and OpenAG, which no one wanted to hear. On the other hand, these formats did come with use-restrictions that kept Sony's music execs from getting too anxious and sad.

The result was that Creative Labs, a little outfit in Singapore, ate Sony's lunch, followed by a bunch of late diners to the table, including a bunch of no-name Korean companies, and most recently, Apple. Sony, who invented the walkman and made billions off of it, has now become an irrelevant player in the personal stereo market, with a market share that's barely a blip on the chart.

And Sony -- a company legendary for tis ability to refine its designs to capitalize on lessons learned in the market -- keeps on repeating the same mistakes, as Derek points out:

Apparently, Sony's hard drive player cannot play MP3s, WMA and (of course) Apple FairPlay-locked AAC. It only plays the Sony's proprietary ATRAC3 format; if it's like Sony's MiniDisc players, forcing consumers to convert to ATRAC3 also forces them to accept certain DRM restrictions. In related news, the Washington Post and New York Times both deemed Connect embarassing, noting its poor interface, proprietary DRM format and codec, copying restrictions ... too many to count.

TO RAPID BUSINESS GROWTH: How Emerging

Internet Business Systems to Improve
Profits and Manage Change While Reducing
the Costs and Risks of Expansion
06/23/2004 03:08 AM
It’s a myth that the information technology (IT) requirements of emerging and midsize businesses are simpler than those of large enterprises. Virtually every day, we interact with the technology and business leaders of midsize companies whose IT demands not only rival the requirements of much larger companies, but in many cases exceed them.Fortunately, emerging and midsize businesses can resolve the dilemma of updating their outmoded IT infrastructure without massive one-time investments in technology. New technologies, such as Microsoft® .NET, enable companies to leverage previous investments in technology while step-by-step integrating their business systems to enable an efficient, cost-effective, and flexible solution to driving and managing growth. SMS Novel To Become MMS Movie 09/20/2004 06:52 AM
Not so long ago, there was a bit of a press frenzy over a novel that was being delivered via SMS text messaging in China. Well, to build off of that hype, a company has now bought the film rights to the story, and yes, they will be filming it in short segments which can be sent to mobile phones as well. While I do think mobile video content should be focused on shorter bits of content, given that the people viewing it are likely to be on the go and/or interrupted more frequently, I wonder how well you can hold the plot line of a movie that's broken into so many pieces.
