= Good Writing? The academic journal Philosophy and Literature
used to hold a "Bad Writing Contest" to ridicule dense,
unreadable academic prose... but a new book argues headache inducing
sentences are necessary to express subtle theoretical points.

Paolo
Valdemarin: "After September 11 the US were leading the largest
coalition of countries ever seen. Now, whatever the US administration
is saying, they are going to a war alone." Actually the British are
fighting with the US.
Lance
Knobel: "I'd like to have seen an alternative to war, but that
would have meant an international commitment to intrusive inspections,
backed by the threat of force. In the light of French and Russian
vacillation, it's very unclear whether that could have worked."
Megnut: "I'm uncomfortable with the idea of America
unilaterally removing someone from power. And I am very disturbed by
the approach the American government has taken to achieve its
goals."
Karlin
Lillington: "The Bush administration has been utterly hopeless and
inept in creating a coalition abroad, in showing leadership overseas,
in working towards consensus."

Keep Voting Ponderous (NPR commentary)
Keep Voting Ponderous (NPR commentary)
04/09/2004 04:12 PM Here's the next-to-final draft of a commentary that ran on NPR's All
Things Considered on Monday. You can listen to it here. I'm double
worried about electronic voting machines. First there's the problem
that lots of people have noted with the new machines. Instead of
marking a box with a pen, you touch the screen to put an electronic
mark in an electronic box. Very convenient and results are tabulated
instantly, but suppose there's a bug in the computer, or suppose
someone hacks into them. How would we even know that the software is
miscounting the votes? The most...

Commentary: Where is Java in the
settlement?
04/12/2004 06:04 AMEditor's note: Our colleague, Javalobby founder Rick Ross, has
graciously allowed NewsForge to reprint his column from this week's
special edition of the Javalobby newsletter. It makes an excellent
package with Richard Stallman's essay on "Free but shackled: The Java
trap." I can neither endorse nor denounce the Sun/Microsoft settlement
at this point. Those of us on the outside have no access to the
particulars of the settlement and have no way to know whether Sun has
sold us out. In truth, precious little of the corporate messaging has
specifically referenced Java. It would be nice to paint a positive
picture, but experience has proven that we shouldn't be too quick to
believe what corporations convey in their highly managed dog-and-pony
shows.
