AFP - As once high-flying mobile marvel Nokia's slumping sales continue to take their toll on the company's share price, tech stocks in general and even on the Finnish economy, Ericsson in neighboring Sweden is offering investors a turnaround story of Cindarella proportions.

Sony Ericsson A1402S II

Sony Ericsson A1402S II 08/03/2004 09:03 AM

au_phone.jpg imageSony Ericsson has a new phone for Japan's au cellular service, dubbed the "A1402S II." It is, as expected, the successor to the "A1402S." It's a somewhat underwhelming phone, though, so it better be cheap; prices are not yet announced. Although it does of course have the Japanese standard (no jealous; stand proud, America) QVGA (240 x 320) resolution on a 2.3-inch display, the camera is a mere 0.34MP (so take some heart in that failing). A cameraless version of the phone will also be available.

So fine, but why do they get all the pink phones? I clack my claws down each link of my chitinous sensor braids in protest.

p_index_image_02b02.jpg image

It's not likely we'll see it over our way, but Japanese carrier has a new Sony Ericsson handset, the A1402S (perhaps that name has a little more zing in Japanese). It looks like fairly standard fare, though, so no need to shed those big crocodile tears like we normally do when Japan gets a new phone with an 80-megapixel videocamera that cleans your teeth and punches your grandma all at once. PhoneMag has a few details, such as they are. One notable thing, though, is that the A1402S comes with a pretty big selection of swappable faceplates. Not groundbreaking, but it makes for a nice picture, at least.

Sony Ericsson K700i Reviewed 08/09/2004 09:46 AM

se_k700i.jpg imageThe Register's Andrew Orlowski reviews the Sony Ericsson K700i and comes away almost totally impressed, with the exception of a horrendous battery life that makes this moderately-powered, fine-screened handset a once-a-day charger. Other than that, though, it's aces. The FM radio works well, the screen is gorgeous, and the K700i's limited web browsing ability is zippy and painless. Well, it's camera is a little lackluster, I guess (it's still just a VGA-quality sensor, despite any claptrap from Sony Ericsson otherwise), but all in all it looks like a solid phone for someone who doesn't mind the daily recharge.

Three versions will be released with differing GSM bands to operate in various markets worldwide, as well five different integrated keyboard variants to make thumb typing in different languages easier. In addition, the P910 now has expanded memory (64MB, up from 16MB) and supports Sony's Memory Stick Duo Pro in sizes up to 1GB. The screen has also been bumped from a 65K color screen to a 262K color version.

Sony Ericsson's K700i

Sony Ericsson's K700i 04/11/2005 09:57 AM
Sony Ericsson's K700i mobile phone offers "the latest in imaging, connectivity and entertainment into one easy-to-use handset" according to Sony Ericsson’s Product Marketing Manager Antal Keur. The phone is equipped with a large high-quality colour screen and is said to be "as much a phone as it is a camera." Outstanding features of the K700i include a VGA camera with video recording capabilities, Bluetooth wireless technology, FM radio, MP3 player, MPEG4 player and a crisp, bright, 1.8-inch 65k TFT colour (176 x 220 pixels) display. The phone features a camera equipped with a 4x digital zoom, and using Sony Ericsson's QuickShare technology, users can share pictures with a computer or other phones, using Bluetooth, email, MMS or a (not-included) USB cable. The K700i can also be used as a remote control for a computer using its built-in infrared, and it also supports Java and Mascot Capsule 3D graphics platform. With a brushed aluminium finish, the K700i is a sleek, stylish phone that anyone could be proud to pack. The rubber cover for the power port is also quite sleek, keeping the ports hidden, but quite difficult to flip (and keep) up. The menu is easy to navigate on this triple-band GSM/GPRS phone, and it supports MMS, allowing the user to compose messages with animations, video clips, pictures and sounds. The K700i is 3.9" x 1.8" x 0.8" (99 mm x 46.5 mm x 19.5 mm), weighs in at 93 grams and and has a standby time of up to 300 hours and talk time of up to 8 hours. The included headset has good sound, a shirt clip and an on/off button, but it is hard to plug in and unplug. The radio works well (and needs the headset to work as it is the antenna) and is a great addition to the phone. There are a few disadvantages to this phone. Starting off with the minor problems, people with large fingers might have trouble pressing the small buttons. Also, some users have complained about battery life of the phone stating that it has to be charged every day. Spymac didn't have this problem but the battery was brand new, though it did drain slightly faster than batteries in other phones tested. Now, for the more serious issues with the phone. When a picture is taken it looks great at the time on the display but the image that is stored is blurred and slightly different to the one previously displayed. The most serious issue is that the menu navigation is sometimes slow and there are often long pauses when navigating. The phone would sometimes stop for no reason, and then, when it recovered, it performed keypresses that occurred during the time it was paused, putting the user in the wrong place in the menu. This frustrating problem occurred at least half of the time that Spymac used the phone. (After thinking it was me and my inability to use this new phone's menu, I did some research and found that many other users had this same problem. One user compared the K700i to his old T610 stating "its like the difference between a tortoise and cheetah when it comes to speed.") The K700i is a nice little phone with great picture and graphics quality and crisp sound. Spymac would recommend this phone if it didn't have slow menu problems as it has crystal-clear sound and some really cool features. Sample picture Pros: MMS support Integrated FM radio Clear sound Cons: Slow menu No email expansion If your company has a product you would like Spymac to review, please send an email to news@spymac.com.

se_910_layla.jpg imageThere's not much to go on at the moment, but one of the Mobile9 forum users posted some purported images of the upcoming Sony Ericsson refresh, the P910. After all the hub bub surrounding the original leaked 'Layla' information, I don't think it's going out on a limb too much to say that these are probably legit -- or the work of a very talented hoaxer. With Sony pulling out of the PDA market (everywhere but Japan), it's reasonable to expect them to start pushing cellular handset upgrades through faster and faster. Of course, that would imply that one organization inside of Sony knows what the other is doing, which is sort of ridiculous, right? Tons more images on Mobile9, if you need more convincing.
