Gracenote Patent
09/20/2004 02:54 AMSomeone who prefers to remain anonymous writes
"A story at CNET states: "A recent court ruling, which dismissed some patent infringement charges by
digital music company Gracenote against Musicmatch, may also have
helped clear the financial picture for the acquisition (of Musicmatch
by Yahoo)." This is bad news for Gracenote since the company relies
almost totally on the threat of legal action to generate sales of its
core business, music recognition. Companies such as Musicmatch and
Microsoft operate their own music recognition services, and many
smaller players would like to do the same, but they have been held in
check by the aggressive threat of a patent lawsuit by Gracenote. This
loss in court, as well as the two recent squashing of investors in two
recent fund raising events by Gracenote, is making the company
unattractive to new investors at a critical, capital intensive time in
the company's brief history."

In the battle to dominate the emerging business of online music
sales, the 800-pound gorilla finally is taking the field. Today,
Microsoft rolls out its MSN Music store, directly challenging its
nemesis, Apple Computer, which so far has ruled that business.
I’ve been testing Microsoft’s new store in advance of
today’s launch and comparing it with Apple’s much-praised
iTunes music store. While the Microsoft entry has a few nice touches,
it is typical of many…

Aussie Upstart Challenges Microsoft for
Internet Desktop Supremacy
03/31/2005 03:31 AM“The Kangaroo Challenge is on”, Hughes says. WOWdesk, a product of the
well-established Australian, Adapt IT firm has audaciously challenged
not only Microsoft, but Yahoo and Google, and for that matter, every
internet power that exists for ‘Internet Desktop Supremacy’. An
‘Internet Desktop’ is a new term for a place on the web where you can
manage all your personal and even business data. Even though WOWdesk
is relatively new, Adapt IT is not. They have been in the Internet
business since 1995 and have some impressive credentials, like
web-enabling the Australian Navy. [PRWEB Mar 31, 2005]

That Microsoft XML Patent
That Microsoft XML Patent
06/05/2005 11:19 PMThe coverage from ZDNet says the patent is for the
conversion of objects into XML files; but if you read the patent itself, the important “Claim 1” doesn’t even
mention XML, it’s just about serializing objects based on using an
annotated source file and a schema. I was trying to find a way to
write about this without becoming shrill and using bad language, but
failing. Fortunately, I ran across a good opinion, shrill but not
obscene, penned by Greg
Aharonian who’s a real actual patent lawyer and thus qualified.
Herewith a little bit of my own shrillness, followed by Greg’s
professional evisceration of this extreme case of patent bogosity.
[Update: slight correction regarding Don Box.]...
