Operating systems can take some funny
turns

There are similarities among all these operating systems but when you've used one relatively exclusively for many years, you become conditioned to look for certain signs that indicate potential problems and instinctively react to those signs.

So maybe Network World should run a list of server and desktop operating systems each year. We could indicate which we wanted to keep around (NT 4 and NetWare 3, for example) while also voting for which to discontinue (Windows ME should "win" handily).

RIAA's funny bookkeeping turns gains

RIAA's funny bookkeeping turns gains
into losses
05/14/2004 09:27 AM
This very good, short article shows the way that the RIAA cooks its books to create losses due to file-sharing when there's no indication that file-sharing is costing them money. Peter sez, "I'm an economist researching the issue too, and I've found the figures frankly unbelievable for a long while. Now I know why."
There is only one logical integration of all these statistics with the recent Soundscan data: even though actual point-of-purchase sales are up by about 9% in the US - and the industry sold over 13,000,000 more units in 2004 (1st quarter) than in 2003 (1st quarter) - the Industry is still claiming a loss of 7% because RIAA members shipped 7% fewer records than in 2003.

Forget the confusing percentages, here's an oversimplified example: I shipped 1000 units last year and sold 700 of them. This year I sold 770 units but shipped only 930 units. I shipped 10% less units this year. And this is what the RIAA wants the public to accept as "a loss."

I'll go a step further. This fact, that Sherman seems to confirm, should logically mean a smaller percentage of returns. But, shouldn't fewer returns mean higher profit margins and faster turnaround; and shouldn't that be good for both the retail and wholesale side of the industry? "Sure," admits Sherman today, "but I have no idea what US shipments looked like in the first quarter." Then how can he claim world-wide "losses" in his March speech to Financial Times New Media?

Last week I upgraded to the 10.4 ("Tiger") version of Mac OS X, and I've been getting acquainted with its new features. The headline attractions are Spotlight (for search), Dashboard (for lightweight applications), and Automator (for scripting). Although I'm happy to have them, none seems likely to make me wildly more productive. That's not entirely Apple's fault, though. As the boundaries between desktop systems and the network continue to blur, it gets harder to deliver value purely in the form of OS or application upgrades.

Consider Spotlight, OS X's new search engine. It works so quickly that, while composing this sentence, I was able to search for "so quickly" and find the file I was in the midst of writing. Other aspects of Spotlight are less compelling, however. The advanced query syntax should be more accessible and better documented. Search results should embed the found words in contextual wrappers.

Even with such improvements, Spotlight wouldn't be indispensable to me. As I noted back in January, desktop search feels like an anachronism in 2005. Increasingly, my data lives in the network. There, it's searchable in the same way from any of the various machines I regularly use. And when I choose to make it so, it's also visible to colleagues or to the Web's aggregation engines. Enhancing these tasks will matter much more to me in the coming months and years than indexing my local hard drives will. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]

Every now and then I find myself playing the Howard Beale (Peter Finch) role in Network, across from Arthur Jensen (Ned Beatty), the capitalist visionary who explains how things really work. At Digital ID World in 2002, it was Phil Becker who channeled Arthur Jensen. During last week's Gillmor Gang show, it was Sun's Jonathan Schwartz. In the wake of JavaOne I'd been thinking tactically about technical aspects of Java. For Schwartz, though, it's all strategic and economic -- as in this sermonette on leasing and net present value. I've thought a lot about subscription businesses, and I've even helped create one, so I have a basic appreciation for the model. But I'm not qualified to evaluate Schwartz's plans for turning Sun's various assets into recurring revenue -- at least, not on financial terms. ...

When I saw this headline - I thought that it meant "LinkedIn was supporting FOAF".  Hah!

Li nkedIn Unleashed. linkedin_teleclass

Scott Allen, of Online Business Networks (and one of the judges in our recently completed ‘Perfect Pitch’ competition,) is doing something newsworthy this Wednesday, April 28, 2004 — he is conducting a 60 minute Teleclass on how to use LinkedIn to better achieve your professional goals.

Many of us utilize a broad spectrum of YASNS, or I should say many of us belong to a number of different SNS’s — but, are we really making good use of them? Or are we just joining as many as we can — hoping to increase the size of our YASNS trading card decks?

When I heard that Scott was giving this class, I was intrigued. It will be interesting to see if any of the other Business Networkings Services — specifically — follow suit and offer a similar series of educational spots to help improve the understanding and utilization of their services amongst their user bases.

Think I’ll go check it out… (-:=
