Bluejacking: more than a fad?
12/05/2003 01:00 AMMbites has a remarkably balanced story about Bluejacking -- the
practice of surreptitiously sending messages to strangers over
Bluetooth -- and how this latest wireless fad might actually catch on,
at least in Europe:[A]necdotal evidence suggests Bluejacking is taking
off among teenagers – the traditional harbingers of new forms of
communication. A poll on mobile community Esato.com this month
registered over 28% of visitors as having Bluejacked someone. New
businesses are emerging to take advantage Bluejacking in particular.
TagText.com is a UK firm which is taking advantage of the ability to
send images as well as text over Bluetooth to create illustrated
digital characters which teenagers can download to their mobiles and
use for Bluejacking...The are also opportunities for so-called 'viral
marketing', allowing cutting edge brands to circulate advertising;
virtual flirting; electronic couponing and promotional messaging based

Bluejacking

Bluejacking is the act of passing a note via Bluetooth to a random
recipient. While traditionally a bit of text or bogus addressbook
entry (e.g. name: "All your Bluetooth are belong to us"), there's no
reason not to
branch out to images, audio, even video--done with only
the most innocent and fun-loving of intentions, of course.
BluejackQ is a place for sharing
your bluejacking experiences.

Get ready for Bluejacking
Get ready for Bluejacking
11/03/2003 10:06 AMAlberto Escalarte of CacheOp alerts us to the new practice of
"bluejacking," which involves using Bluetooth to surreptitiously send
messages to strangers:[U]sing a phone with Bluetooth, you can create a
phonebook contact and write a message, eg. 'Hello, you've been
bluejacked', in the 'Name' field. Then you can search for other phones
with Bluetooth and send that phonebook contact to them. On their
phone, a message will popup saying "'Hello, you've been bluejacked'
has just been received by Bluetooth" or something along those lines.
For most 'victims' they will have no idea as to how the message
appeared on their phone. So, personalised messages like 'I like your
pink top' and the startled expressions that result is where the fun
really starts.I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict that this won't
be very popular here in the US, since you'd be hard pressed to find
many people with...

Warchalking + Bluejacking =
Bluechalking?
12/08/2003 11:48 AMI suppose it was just a matter of time until someone did this, but
Mike Butcher of mbites has coined the term "Bluechalking" to describe
the practice of, "marking a Bluetooth symbol on sidewalks/pavements
and walls to indicate that someone with a Bluetooth-enabled phone is
often in the area, using the Bluetooth symbol [pictured at right] and
your phone's 'name'." Taking things even a step further, mbites reader
Edgar Gonzalez suggests that Bluejackers could also wear clothes with
the Bluetooth logo emblazoned on them, or (gasp!) even get the logo
tattooed on themselves. Read [Via The Red Ferret Journal]...

Bluejacking: anonymous Bluetooth
messaging
11/01/2003 12:57 PMBluejacking is the art of sending a message to a nearby stranger's
Bluetooth phone, having first encoded the message as the "Name" field
of an address-book entry, i.e., "Name: I have bluejacked you, I 0wn
l0l0l0l0l." BluejackQ is a new community site for posting bluejacking
experiences.
Ellie and I were just outside a shopping centre in town and she was
searching for a victim near where we were sitting. She came up with a
contact; some Nokia, I'm not sure which one. We found out a few
minutes later that our victim (who showed an un-canny resemblance to
Alan Ford) was sitting in Starbucks with his wife.
After they'd left Starbucks, we followed the couple all over town for
about 30mins. He couldn't understand what was happening to him and was
looking around all over the place for his bluejacker! We went up and
down, around in circles, dodging his stare; quite literally, up in
lifts, down on escalators!

Wi-Fi Use on UK Trains Popular
Wi-Fi Use on UK Trains Popular
09/21/2004 12:42 PMWi-Fi service on UK trains is seeing solid growth in usage: Use of the
service is growing 77 percent week over week, but that figure is a bit
misleading because the number of trains offering Wi-Fi is also
increasing. However, users are also spending an increasing amount of
time on the network and there seems to be an indication that
passengers are deciding to buy first class tickets because the Wi-Fi
access there is free. In other commuter Wi-Fi news, Sydney, Australia
is considering offering Wi-Fi on Sydney ferries....

More Wi-Fi on European Trains
02/10/2004 02:40 AMEurostar, the train operator, will start testing Wi-Fi access on its
cross-channel services this year: But service won't be available while
in the tunnel under the English Channel. Another train operator, GNER,
has been experimenting with Wi-Fi on its trains. It achieves coverage
in tunnels by stringing together cell phone antennas to maintain the
connection, which otherwise is backhauled via satellite. Apparently
train operators are hoping that Wi-Fi services will draw customers
back away from short-haul airlines....
Bullet Trains
Bullet Trains
01/04/2004 12:23 AMJapan's maglev train sets record: CNN had a story on
Headline News about maglev trains and it got the geek in me all
excited. They mentioned this one.
The experimental three-car maglev was carrying passengers
when it set the world's top speed for a train, clocking at 581 kph
(361 mph)...
Now, here's the deal: 600 m.p.h. in a plane is not really a
problem, because there's nothing to run into in the air (I know, I
know — other planes, buildings, the ground...don't get smart).
But 361 m.p.h. on train tracks? On the ground? Where there are
things like cars, and cows, and school buses full of little children
that could end up on the tracks? That 361 m.p.h. would seem so much
faster if you ran into something.
It happened in 1998 in Germany. One hundred twenty people died when abullet
train derailed and hit an overpass. And it was only travelling at 175
mp.h.
I don't want to be alarmist or anything, but that kind of speed,
that close to stuff that's as unforgiving as an overpass just makes me
a little nervous. And it's only a matter of time before Jon Voight
and Tom Cruise get into
a fight on top of one of them, and then what happens?

Trains vs. Airplanes

12/04/2003 01:29 AM Tra
ins vs. Airplanes. Amtrak has reported record ridership levels for
the Thanksgiving season. But the success of the rails is indebted to
post 9/11 air-travel anxiety. Maybe, it would be better for travelers
to stop fearing hijackings and resume flying planes instead of riding
intercity trains out of fear. On the other hand, it could be a good
thing that rail travel is getting a second look after years of
decline.
