The Need To Be Always Connected

The Need To Be Always Connected 01/16/2004 01:03 PM
Not all that much new in this CNN article about how many people who travel for work are increasingly investigating the wireless options necessary to keep them in touch. If anything, it shows that the wireless industry isn't going to fade away any time soon. More interesting, though, is how these wireless technologies blur the line of "work life" and "personal life" even more. For a while, people were complaining that they were working both at home and at the office. With wireless technologies, they can be "working" from anywhere - at any time. While some hate this idea, I wonder if it will give more incentive to people to find jobs that they enjoy doing. If it's enjoyable, it's not so much of a pain if you're doing it all the time. Much more likely, though, is that we'll (finally!) develop better technologies for separat ing work and personal life - so that mundane work related emails and voicemails will simply be held over until we're back at work (though, emergency messages will go through).

Testing it now! Have my prayers been answered???

Update: yes and no. Bloglines on my Treo 600 is fab-u-lous! I started out by testing five feeds, and it looked goooood. Next I loaded my current list of subscriptions from Radio and displayed all 244 of them in the desktop version. Just as I was going to view them on my handheld, though, the BlogLines server went down. I'll try it again later and post another update, although this does point out one of the problems with relying on a hosted aggregator that is out of your control.  :-

Of course I'll be paring that list down quite a bit to show only the more important ones on my T600, but so far I'm quite happy with my original test of five feeds. The screens are as efficient as those in Hand/RSS in terms of usage of screen real estate.

I'll have to play with this some more, but label me verily impressed! Two problems stop me from completely switching to Bloglines, though. The first is that I don't see a way to do a chronological view of feeds on my handheld, and the second is that there is no way for me to post to my blog from within BL, a feature that is critical to my ability to maintain my site. If those two features were added, I would switch aggregators in a heartbeat!

While internet connectivity is getting more and more available no matter where you are (and no matter what device you're using) it doesn't mean you're always connected. I know that it's incredibly annoying to open up my laptop on an airplane, or anywhere where there's no access and have to deal with applications that want to phone home for no particular reason. In many cases, I've blocked these off at the personal firewall level, but not all of them. Intel today launched an initiative to try to get a new generation of applications developed that keep working whether or not an internet connection is present. Intel's reason for all of this, of course, is that the more productive computers and devices are, the more chips they sell - so, at times, they feel the need to whip some developers into shape to get them over a hurdle.

Connected appliances come home

Westinghouse (yes, that Westinghouse) is coming out with a line connected home appliances running Windows CE .NET that includes a connected microwave oven (pictured at right), a coffee maker, and a bread maker. All the appliances are joined together via the "Home Hub," a combination CD player/FM radio/alarm clock which connects to the Internet and can let you remotely control your appliances. There's also the iCEBOX, which we've mentioned on the site before, a kitchen PC with a flip down LCD screen and a wireless keyboard that can be used to access your other connected appliances. Both the connected microwave and bread maker even come with UPC barcode readers which can automatically know how to prepare your food by scanning the packaging of whatever it is you want to eat (and download new UPC information for new products automatically over the Internet), while the connected coffee maker can remind you...
