John Battalle links to a press release from Neilsen / Net Rating stating that: broadband connections for the first time reached 51 percent of the American online population at-home during the month of July, as compared to 38 percent last July ... Sixty-three million Web users connected to the Internet via broadband during July 2004 as compared to 61.3 million accessing the Internet through narrowband. Overall growth for broadband connections rose 47 percent year-over-year... This is a sea change. While the technology industry went through the bust, broadband finally hit the steep part of the adoption curve. As result, the assumptions that one can make about users have totally changed. People have been predicting ubiquitous broadband internet connectivity for years, but now it is truly around the corner. There is lots of opportunity for new applications and uses of technology. I'm looking forward to it....

Now that so many people have broadband, what are they doing with it? Broadband Reports points to a study suggesting that broadband users know a lot more useless info. They know a lot more from all that surfing -- but a lot of it is really trivial information. Of course, they determine this based on how involved users are with "important political developments," which seems like a fairly subjective metric. A more reasonable conclusion might be that people who are politically active find that important enough to do, even at dialup speeds. Once they get broadband, however, they don't increase their political activity, because they've already gotten as involved as they could -- so they use the extra speed to do other things that are important to them.
