05/17/2004 10:37 PMwashingtonpost.com - The Supreme Court upheld the right of disabled
people to sue state governments that fail to provide ramps, elevators
or other forms of access to their courthouses yesterday -- a clear but
limited victory for the disability rights movement that blunts a trend
at the court in favor of states' rights.

iTunes hack disabled
iTunes hack disabled
03/22/2005 03:31 PMA security hole that allowed users of PyMusique software to tap into
the iTunes Music Store and purchase songs stripped of antipiracy
protections has been closed by Apple.
The PyMusique software emerged last week as a copy protection-free
back door into the popular iTunes store. One of the creators was Jon
Johansen, the Norwegian programmer responsible for releasing
DVD-copying software in 1999.
Apple released a statement Monday saying the problem had been fixed,
and that some iTunes customers would need to upgrade their
software."The security hole in the iTunes Music Store which was
recently exploited has been closed, and as a consequence the iTunes
Music Store will now sell music only to customers using iTunes version
4.7," the company said in a statement.
Wireless Technologies to Help the
Disabled
Wireless Technologies to Help the
Disabled
02/19/2004 03:25 PMThe Georgia Institute of Technologies is working on developing an
array of devices, many of them using wireless technologies, to help
disabled people: One system uses GPS, a mobile PC, and headphones to
help blind people get around. The user programs a destination into the
computer then the computer generates sounds that the user perceives to
come from a certain direction. The sounds lead the user to the
destination. Another project will make switching on lights or changing
channels on the TV easier for people with limited motor control. Users
can make certain gestures in front of a panel that beams infrared
light at a video camera. When the user breaks the light with a
gesture, the movement is translated by a computer which comands a
household appliance over a wireless network. The researchers are able
to work on these projects due to a $5 million, five year federal grant
form the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research,
which was awarded two years ago....

Sexual Services for the Disabled
Sexual Services for the Disabled
01/17/2004 10:48 PMWhen the taboos of prostitution and sex of the disabled meet, there's
bound to be plenty of controversy. In Germany, the Dutch prostitute
Nina de Vries stands at the center of this debate. She offers erotic
massages to mentally retarded clients and trains others to do the
same. Recently she attempted to create a network of sexual caregivers
in Zurich and was rebuffed. The article describes her work and the
issues involved.
Wirelessly Enabling the Disabled
Wirelessly Enabling the Disabled
02/18/2004 01:30 PMMy latest piece for TheFeature is about researchers at Georgia Tech
who are hacking mobile devices and off-the-shelf components to help
disabled people become more independent. I'm really intrigued by the
wearable "audiitory display," a navigation system for the blind that
generates spatially-located sounds as trail-markers for the wearer to
follow as they walk somewhere.
