More On The New Site Design

More On The New Site Design 01/25/2003 11:53 PM

Thanks for everyone's feedback on the new design, keep it coming. I fixed a bug in the commenting system where emails where getting shown when people did not want them to be. Feel free to just test the commenting system, I want to weed out any errors. If you do have problems, let me know what browser and platform you are on.

I'd like to explain the new CMS in detail. I explained it well to G.K. Nelson of Stonefishspine in email, and below is a part of that conversation that I think explains the system well.

The CMS uses PHP/MySql, and just a touch of Apache work. The way it works is there is a page called error.php that all bad requests are forwarded to (401,403, and 404 errors). Then, the error page determines if you were requesting a blog page, and if so delivers that to you. The whole thing is transparent. Ex: When you request http://www.readinged.com/blog/archives/December-2002/ the server sees that there is no such file, and directs you to the error page. The error page sees that you requested something within /blog/, and feeds you what you wanted without you knowing any different. And it will work with search engines because of the transparency of the whole thing; you never know you're actually hitting an error page. The advantage that I see is you get a clean URL scheme that you can adapt however you want without having to actually maintain all of those pages. The only disadvantage I see is its going to cause a lot of "bad request" hits in log files, but I can live with that.

I got the idea to design the system this way from PHP.net. If you are not familiar with the PHP website, they use a system similar to this for bad requests. If you request http://www.php.net/strtolower their site engine will redirect you to the function page for the strtolower() function, who's URL is actually quite longer than what you need to type in.

Web Design Site Comparison

Web Design Site Comparison 08/12/2004 02:40 PM

These web sites are identical — or are they?: Here's a wonderful page that takes 10 sites — all very popular in the blogosphere — then examines them for common elements like search boxes, righthand columns, footers, etc. Degrees if incidence and dissonance are calculated and lead to interesting conculsions.

What is hence noteworthy is that all these designs resemble themselves very much. They use a panel of common element, and then place them at identical locations on their pages. Hence, the difference between one web site and another is then merely colors and pictures.

Why such isomorphism? Because, as in print design, the reader needs to be guided. Font size, for instance, tells the reader such bit is capital and such bit is trivial. This survey attempts to demonstrate this type of statement applied to web design.

Very, very much worth reading. Reminds me of some pages in the back of Jakob Nielsen's "50 Homepages" book where he reprinted common elements ("home" links, search boxes, etc.) from the 50 sites he reviewed.

The format of the new security bulletin summary has been designed based on customers’ needs. The security bulletin summary will allow customers to scan a single document (for a product family) and make informed decisions about installing the patch in their IT environments. In addition, the content on security bulletin summary provides more information than had been provided in the former process. For example, the security bulletin lists the deployment tools that may be used to install the security patches. Appendix 1 lists all information provided in the new security bulletin summary document.
