Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into
Tow-Away Zone then hold cars for ransom
03/22/2005 04:59 PMMark Frauenfelder:
Tian says: "On March 7th, I took
photos of a tow truck driver that damages a vehicle then tries
to get away in Phoenix.
Sunday night (March 20th), Phoenix news channel 15 used a bait car
and discovered that local tow truck company(s) would actually push
cars into tow-away zone first, then held the cars as "hostages" for
ransom."
I just watched it. The TV crew set up a white SUV as a bait car,
and parked it legally. Time and time again, tow trucks would push the
car into a red zone, snap a photo, and tow it away. Of course, when
the TV crew showed the owner of the tow truck company how his drivers
had pushed the car into the red lane, the owner denied responsibility.
"I didn't push it," he said.
Arizona lawmakers have been half-heartedly writing legislation to
stop this (isn't it illegal to do this already) but the tow truck has
so far been able to convince them not to ruin the good thing they've
got going.

spending too much money to do it. That's the conclusion of a
government watchdog group, which estimates more than $6.5 billion was
spent last year keeping data under wraps. By Noah Shachtman.

Democracy Is Just Too Expensive
Democracy Is Just Too Expensive
05/04/2004 12:21 PMIt turns out, by the way, with all this talk about electronic voting
and how flimsy it is, that the federal commission tasked with making
sure that when you vote, it counts, is saying that
it's way too expensive for them to actually make sure
electronic voting works. Not only is the commission lacking
money, but it's lacking in any kind of authority to tell election
officials what to do. Those election officials have set up their own
volunteer group to discuss issues with electronic voting, but even
that's not binding in any way. In other words, right now, election
officials can pretty much do what they want when it comes to
electronic voting. Democracy, it appears, is just too expensive and
too complicated to do right.

Is Microsoft Less Expensive Than Linux?
12/04/2003 06:03 PMUNTIL RECENTLY, if you wanted to find someone who thought that a
Windows-based program was cheaper than one based on Linux, you had to
go all the way to Redmond. No more. Not since Microsoft paid Forrester
Research's Giga Research to conduct a comparative study of the costs
of developing a Web-based portal. The study compared the costs
incurred by five large and midsize companies that used the Java 2
Enterprise Edition with costs incurred by seven large and midsize
companies that used .Net applications. For large corporations in the
study, the cost of using Microsoft products for development and
deployment plus three years of maintenance was 28 percent less than
the cost for J2EE/Linux.

The Return Of Useless Expensive
Conferences
The Return Of Useless Expensive
Conferences
05/14/2004 01:32 PMAbout a year ago, I got annoyed at some of the pointless "big thinker"
conferences that were showing up and wrote up a random essay about
the
conference I wanted to attend, which was basically playing off the
idea that the only useful time at a conference was at lunch, when you
actually got to talk to others. I also wanted to force people at the
conference into seeing things from the side of people who opposed
them, just to make the conversation a little more interesting.
Unfortunately, it appears that, with the economy starting to comeback,
conference organizers are pushing more of these useless "big thinker"
conferences. Charles Cooper over at CNET is
making a similar
point to the one I made after getting invited to yet another of
these pointless conferences that wants to charge a few thousand
dollars (he doesn't say, but the conference in question is Web 2.0).
Basically, they're putting the same people on stage and expecting
everyone to pay thousands of dollars (though, to make this one even
worse: it's "invite only" - but you can
request an invitation to
pay $2,000, which seems particularly obnoxious) to listen to
people say what you already know they're going to say. As Cooper
points out: "It is not long before at least half the attendees slip
into the corridor, where the conversation is infinitely more
interesting. Plus, there's coffee." All that for between $1,695 to
$2,790. No thanks.
Want To Buy The Most Expensive Movie

Want To Buy The Most Expensive Movie
Ticket Of Your Life?
11/18/2003 12:51 PMRight at the top of the dot com bubble, there were a new clump of
startups that were focused on the idea of letting your "everyday
investor" invest in early stage startups. Since everyone had become
knowledgeable about how angels and VCs were investing in private
companies and becoming insanely wealthy when they went public, a bunch
of VCs thought they would capitalize on the average investor's desire
to be part of the "next big dot com". Of course, plans like that make
sense when every startup does well, but they fall apart quickly when
the bubble pops. There's a reason why private companies take money
from certain individuals and firms and there's a reason why it's
called "risk" capital. These investments can (and often do) disappear
in an instant. So, I find it a bit amusing that Hollywood has
suddenly latched onto a similar plan, and are trying to
sell shares in a new "independent" movie, starring Ethan
Hawke, to the public. A minimum buy will cost you nearly $1,000 and
you are
extremely unlikely to see a penny of that in return.
The folks selling these shares aren't looking for
investors,
they're looking for suckers who want to think they're a part of the
movie business. About the most anyone who buys into this is likely to
see in return is a movie - and, you can probably just wait a bit and
spend a few bucks at the theater (or even less at the local video
store) for that.

01/05/2005 10:03 PMAP - Delta Air Lines' plan to cut its most expensive fares and ax a

warned the move could reduce the already struggling industry's
revenues as much as $3 billion a year if every carrier followed
suit.

06/07/2004 08:39 PMAt Techdirt, we're big supporters of consumer rights and convincing
companies to do what's right for consumers - but sometimes these
groups seem to forget to think one step ahead towards the consequences
of their actions. That seems to be the case with a group that is
trying to
sue wireless carriers to force them to
offer unlocked mobile phones which can be used on various networks
(though, only the GSM networks, since that's the only case where it
would matter). As Eric Lin writes in TheFeature, if this gets
anywhere, it could make things worse for the very "consumers" they're
trying to protect. Most mobile phones these days are heavily
subsidized by the carriers - and forcing them to offer unlocked phones
will likely mean much greater reluctance to offer such a subsidy on a
phone that could be taken to another provider. Instead, prices for
most phones would rise sharply - harming everyone who isn't concerned
about having an unlocked phone. Since there
already are
unlocked phones on the market (though, as you might expect, they're a
bit pricier) it seems like the market is working this one out by
itself. Those who want an unlocked phone can pay for it, while
everyone else gets the benefit of cheaper phones. So far, it appears
that most buyers prefer the cheaper price to the idea that, one day,
they may want to pop in another providers SIM card to switch mobile
carriers.

Red Hat Professional Workstation: More
expensive, fewer features
02/18/2004 03:50 AMRed Hat Professional Workstation was designed to allow former users of
the company's consumer product line to continue to use a supported
platform without having to migrate to Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Unfortunately, it fails to live up to its predecessors in key areas,
and is considerably more expensive in some usage scenarios. Home users
should look to the Fedora Project if they wish to continue using Red
Hat technology, or consider migrating to another Linux distribution.
Small businesses should analyse their current expenditure and consider
migrating to another vendor.
